View Full Version : Devon Weekend....
Hi All, I am going to have a meet the w/e Friday 9th - Sunday 11th December , its going to be either at Silverwoods or The Great Plantation, as my site is taken by our local farmer for grazing , also if we get inclement weather , he needs the emergency evacuation option for his stock .
The good news is that the site has been secured for 2012 !!
So anyone wanting to attend please , show an interest on here , any questions etc feel free to ask , no cost just an informal gathering as usual .
Atb Ivan....
Have had a chance to explore the Great Plantation now but where is Silverwoods? Is it at Ilsington?
Hi Skate yes it is , its an old silver mine an old stomping ground of mine when i was a lad , another slight possibility is Rora Woods , when we have a few confirmed we can decide.
hi ivan sounds good to me matey how you feeling better i hope

I should be able to attend mate. Need to check a few things first, but I'll let you know.
Hi All, I have just got back from a reccy at the possible sites for the upcoming meet , and The Great Plantation is ideal , safe parking , about a quarter of a mile walk to the site, level well sheltered area , plenty of trees to hang and room to ground dwell, loads of firewood, small stream running through .
So.i don't think there will be many of us, coz of Christmas etc. Speaking of which a few have expressed an interest in a Boxing Day meet for a few days so those into that let me know .
Paul W. I am quite happy to stay on till the Wed if that helps pal , not sure who else will be able to, maybe state on here , thanks .
A bit nearer the time i will send you all directions etc.
Cheers Ivan...

It looks like if I can shake off the hangover on Sunday I should be down in the afternoon and can hopefully stay for a few days. Time to get the cold weather gear out!

Oh...as discussed....
Right you lot , here it is ! after much wandering etc. I have found us a lovely spot, for those of you interested , closest grid ref i can acheive is .
SX 813 - 756 , closest postcode is TQ12 6HL , and for the more technical Lat 50.56805 Long -3.677458 .
Its half way along Belle View Straights, you can find one pic on the interweb , decent parking , level ground , great hang and ground facilities, loads of firewood/kindling ,a clean little stream , local shops about a mile away , and even a pub about 3/4 of a mile away !!
Only drawback i can see , after spending a couple of hours there yesterday , ( Sunday ) was a couple of more adventurous dog walkers , but if we go deeper ,no chance of being disturbed. 114 acres to choose from.
Looking forward to it already Ivan...

Hi guys,
Sorry to have gone to ground for a while, really bad chest infection and huge pressure at work/college that put me on my back for a while (and not in a good way) but pretty much on top of things again. Thanks again to everyone for contributing knowledge, demos and advice that led to some super coursework that really blew them away at college. You are a super bunch of people.
Can I just confirm starting and ending days/times for the weekend (lost the thread a bit, so to speak, while offline) and also what would you like me to bring food/booze wise? Haven't seen any mistletoe yet but am looking hard!!!! Missing all of you like crazy and really looking forward to seeing those who can make it. Lots of love to those who can't.

Hello Peeps !
Just got back from a rather wet but interesting weekends camping with Adam and Lee, Friday night Adam and I in the wood where the meet is to be held , just to try it out really , The police turned up in the carpark at 2am thinking it was a suicide mission !! as Adams car is registered to somewhere hours away ! still all sorted out .
Sat. on Dartmoor , wont say anymore than the weather for the meet had better be nicer than that !!
Anyway, glad to know you will be getting out again Rick see you Sat .
Lucy i will ring you re directions . Also i think Adam and myself can stay until the Monday.
Dave53, just spoke to Badger, and him and Foxy can make the Friday night , but work commitments mean they have to depart Sat .
Ivan...
Hi , just to clarify a few things . As this is a new site to all of us . Adam and myself gave it a trial run on Friday night , and apart from a bit of distant traffic noise until about 9.00pm and a dog walker 8.00am Saturday , very peaceful and comfortable.
A couple have asked about bringing stuff etc . Seeing as this is a small meet by our standards , and there is a tesco a mile away , we can all chip in for ingredients if a group meal is wanted.
I will bring camp kettle , frying pans , dutch oven, group cooking pots etc .
Anyone not quite sure of location , or is planning to arrive at a wierd time , and needs my tel. no. just shout . ( reception on all networks is good )
Crikey i read my own text sometimes and i don't even get it !!
Ivan...
hi ivan al and i can't get there friday al has work commitments .it looks like there will be seven of us at the meet by the looks of it I'm happy to bring the turkey butt and if someone brings some veg i.e. broccoli carrots swede tatties and some gravy we can all have a sunday lunch on saturday and mane some scones jam and clotted cream for afters nom nom nom anyway you need to give me directions i.e. postcode longitude latitude road etc etc get back to me on it regards dave:christmas2::hammock::than kyou:

Looking forward to seeing all again. Glad it was just a suicide watch from old bill and not asking about what 3 men where doing alone in the dark on the moors lol.
I will be arriving Saturday around 12:30 ish hopefully and sort of guess where going buts it's all and adventure so Gsme on
Love and hugs to all
Hi Dave, repeat of directions , Grid Ref SX813-756 , nearest postcode TQ126HL , LAT 50.56805 LONG -3.677458 . Its a long straight single carriageway called Belle View Sraights , about half way along there is a house , right by this is a car park , you are there !! Take the footpath from the car park into the wood on your right . duck under a fallen tree , continue on, keep an eye and ear to your left and hopefully you should see/hear/smell us !!
I will sort veg, extras etc , blimey its going to be a bit festive !!
Ivan...
Also , 10 people confirmed, 3 undecided and of course a few day visitors, so that turkey butt is going to be well and truly roasted, how do you spell truly , by the way ? does not look right .
Any way , its going to be fun , hope its freezing by then as i for one are fed up with mild damp weather !!
Ichneumon
04-12-2011, 23:32
Never been into butt myself but for some it's their favourite part of the bird! :D
In all fairness , i had to pm Dave53 and ask exactly what a turkey butt was, and it turns out it is both breasts actually !! so nothing to do with the area that you would think!! anyway Mr Newman it will be very tasty , and its a crying shame you can't attend , especially as its your original camping/bushcrafting/stomping ground from 50 ! years ago ! jealous ? not you sir !
Ichneumon
04-12-2011, 23:54
I'm not going to tell you whether I'm jealous of you camping in my old stomping ground or you getting a bit of breast, but you can take it from me that I am jealous! :puppy_dog
Mr Newman , as according to official data we both joined this site , in July of this year and i have considerably more posts than you ! So i think i will take over as the Great Plantation, guide and expert, and i do not want you to bring up anything about , you telling me about the site in the first place or that you have educated me in flora and fauna , the Templar way etc . As you can't be bothered to make the million mile journey to see your old pals to a place that is special in your heart , you therefore relinquish all right of entry to said wood , gorging of butt and breast on site ! and i will be phoning the Star Inn at the earliest oppurtunity to get you banned sir , as you are a cad and a bounder, consider my gauntlet thrown !
On a lighter note if you are prepared to apologise , i may see you over the festive period ,failing that the new year .
yours respectfully Ivan...

I'll bring the hankie, for which to initiate said proceedings. a bottle of hock for the winner, and a wooden box for the looser.
Morning ! Time to get back on thread me thinks , Adam ,i have spoken to Badger , he was going to swerve the meet as his Landie is very poorly at the mo, so i kindly offered your collection services , as transport was the only issue , therefore would you mind awfully volunteering to pick Badger and Foxy up , and deliver them safely to the woods ?
Badge said he will catch a train to Newton Abbot station , as that would make it much easier , awiting your reply , thankyou .
Your best attention at all times Ivan... ( Head of The Great Plantation )
Ps don't mention any of this to that Newman character OK !
savagebushcraft
05-12-2011, 12:49
No problem mate. Can pick them up from the station. Was it Saturday?
Hi Adam, no mate it would be the Friday , as they can only stay Friday night , work commitments on the Saturday night for both. Will ring or text you when i know the train times , to see if it fits , if not i am sure we can figure out a way .
The forecast is for it turning much colder BRRR!! , Thats music to my ears , so all we have to do is ensure the rain stays away .
I plan to be in the woods from 12.30pm Friday onwards, so anybody who needs my mobile number, just say so , then hopefully due to the wonders of modern technology we won't have lots of mini meets going on , and we will be alltogether!!
Ivan...
Have a good meet, one and all, but I'm afraid I'll have to drop out of this one. Just too many family, Christmassy events are coming together this weekend. See you next time around, Trev
Hi Guys and Gals, getting closer now ! one eye on our forecast looks decent , but be advised much colder , a couple have had to cancel or due to commitments can't make this one , so Jon , Trev , Darren , Paul W, Paul N , Bushwhacker, we will raise a glass to you .
Don't worry we will all be together early in the new year, as once the Christmas thing is over i will announce Dartmoor 5 , haven't thought of a witty title yet !
There have been questions about , mistletoe, yule logs , berried /variegated holly etc , so anybody who wants to take some home let me know , then we can go on a forage , but you may have to be blindfolded as some of the locations are top secret !
Can lightening strike twice ? what are the chances of two gorgeous french damsels in distress , wandering into camp lost cold and wet ? Well one can hope !
Also , as a foot note a big hello to Freddyfish and Nova and Pinky as they have been quiet lately .

There will no doubt be new threads and much discussion about the impromptu demonstration of hypothermia symptoms and the team spirit that turned a potential disaster into a happy ending - but I wanted to get in first and say thanks guys - for recognising the problem and getting me to the right place at the right time. We always said that this was a group that looked out for each other and last night proved that totally.
I deserve every joke that will now be told at my expense - happy that I am actually able to laugh about it now, but also aware that I have learnt a valuable lesson the hard way, which won't be forgotten.
Proud of you guys for your responsible and appropriate actions, and very grateful.

wasnt that cold was it surely?
The paramedics seemed to think it was lol.
Hi All , firsty on a serious note we have all learnt some lessons this weekend, that with all the good fun that comes with our meets , it was unfortunate that one of our group became unwell due to hypothermia, the fact that TBL is a trained first aider and also recognised the signs, was paramount to getting the right help and treatment swiftly .
To be honest , if it were down to the rest of us we would have been half an hour later in making a decision , but as it was Al took charge called the emergency services and a potential disaster was averted .
Apart from the obvious concern for one of our group, the other point to raise is that every member of a meet should have access to grid references, postcodes etc, because we tend to be a little tucked away in pursuit of our pleasure .
I wont dwell on this matter , as it was a sobering couple of hours with thankfully a great out come , suffice to say our dear friend made a full recovery and is back home safe and well.
Right thats enough of that !! if one of your pals at a meet looks cold , feels cold and starts talking more rubbish than usual ! becomes unresponsive and you can't make them warmer by all the normal means , get the ambulance out , they are fantastic , and due to the right information they were in a remote location within 15 minutes .
Fortunately there was a crate of beer in the boot of the car , while we waited the hour and a half for the attention seeking so and so to be dealt with .
Only joking , glad you are feeling better, know it has not put you off .
See you soon love, All of us xx

Right ! back to the usual nonsense , we had a brillant weekend , and apart from the fire brigade we would have had our treble up !!
Fri. Adam and myself got to the original site ( with permission ) set up lit a fire cooked some grub and were settling down to another great night out under the stars , looking forward to the next morn and arrival of our fellow camp mates .
Then just as we were tucking in to our sausage and bacon rolls , the plod turned up !! treated us as if we were terrorists, asked us if we were armed searched us questioned us etc , as they had a call saying 2 army looking blokes were in the woods acting suspiciously , bloody nosey joe public
after much radio work and a call to the owner of the wood ( not naming them or the warden etc ) it was decided that we should be evicted forthwith.
Oh pooh !! an hour and a half before dark , loads of fellow bushcrafters on their way , what do we do ? thanks to that wonderful thing the mobile telephone , disaster was averted , and we quickly re located to our usual site .
My pet hate setting up in the dark...

Fortunately there was a crate of beer in the boot of the car , while we waited the hour and a half for the attention seeking so and so to be dealt with .
Only joking , glad you are feeling better, know it has not put you off .
Thanks, feeling better except for every muscle in my body hurting like hell in response to sharply contracting muscles while shivering that gave me a hell of a workout! Not recommended.
As attention seeking goes - a team of blokes looking after me, then two more in uniform, flashing lights and our resident 'photo-journalist' flashing away on his camera, sounds like about as much attention as a woman could ever hope for - such a shame that I remember virtually none of it - talk about bad luck!! Like you, I was really impressed by the paramedics who were so cheerful, calm and supportive (as were you guys).
Certainly not put off, but a great deal wiser. Got to say a special thanks to Al, to whom I owe a debt that is a tough one to ever repay adequately.
Part 2
I forgot to mention that two members that had stated that they could not possibly attend the meet , turned up at the first intended location !
and only after a text saying that they were bearing gifts ! That i told them where we had gone .
I must say Tony (Arry as he is known and calls everyone else , women included, coz its easier ) was a welcome new member of the Dartmoor gang ,
he slid in perfectly as if he had allways been in the club. Pleasure to meet you sir , i know you will be back .
Hopefully he will join BCUK become a member and post his pics.
Part 3
After all were informed of the new location ( some rather glad ! ) We set up had a nerve calming drink , and awaited the arrival of all the other fools , sorry serious bushcrafters ,
Everyone safely ensconsed at camp , we set about the serious business of Christmas lights , tinsel etc.
Special thanks to Dave53 ( the paparazzi ) you will see !! for the double turkey breast and stuffing , and of course to TBL for his cheffing duties did us proud again mate , by the way only an opinion of course but warm saki tates like badger wee wee !
Nice to see Skate and Savagewolfrm , who were only day visitors , although when Lucy became unwell and we had to get her MOT'd and serviced , kept the home fires burning .
Part 3
by the way only an opinion of course but warm saki tates like badger wee wee !.
i've got to ask Ivan.........how do you know ? :)
Dear Robbi, in answer to your question , my scatalogical knowledge is second to none , which of course includes urine, and after many meets having tasted home brewed beer , wine , mead etc its easy to make a comparison , warm saki was a new one on me and was awfull, i nearly likened it to a cross between sheep dip and ear wax , hope this has cleared up your concerns .
Ivan...
Part 4
Fortunately the rest of the weekend went without incident , and as it was not Dartmoor 5 and there were not the usual numbers , we did not do many bushcrafty things , so apart from the impending photographic evidence of the trip i for once don't have anything else to add , other than thanks guys for another memorable weekend and apologies for the rain on Sunday .
BY the way , the silver birch wine , although very sweet was really nice and i can't liken that to any wee wee , at all !

Thank God! I was expecting a right larruping. It's a wonderful sleeping bag and worth every penny. Well - it is if you get into the right side of it! :)
Don't worry Mr Newman , i have not forgotten about that little matter , i was just wondering whether to start a new thread on the subject to maximise ridicule and pleasure.

That was one of the funniest stories of the meet for me when you let us know this morning.
I would like to say that all of you arrys and mrs arry are all degenerates - I'm glad to part of it and look forward to being awarded my degenerate badge along with how to try a light afire and of course my first age badge.
Next time is someone gonna show me how to make a woggle.
I sent the photo to 'Itchy man' or whatever his name is and he gonna get them on the form
Welcome aboard the good ship BCUK Arry , the decent thing to do is announce your arrival under the introductions thingy , and people you dont even know will be nice !
Then straight back here to help slate and extract the urine out of Itchynewbloke and others , good man .
Sorry to hear you took a turn for the worse Lucy. Good job you were in capable hands. Hope you feel ok now. Really enjoyed my brief visit and wished it could have been longer. See you all next time.

Fantastic photos there Paul. Nicely done goodjob
Good Afternoon,
I thought i may raise the important subject of kit selection, we all like to think that with the aid of common sense , this forum and the internet in general ,that when we want to invest our hard earned cash on something ,that when we push the add to cart button, we have made the right choice .
Without mentioning any names , a certain member of the group made a purchase knowing he was spending a w/e on Dartmoor in December , so after much studying and homework , decided on the snugpak turboliser , special patrol group canine genitalia, in olive ( £180 quids worth )
I for one rushed up to his spot on Sat morning at 7,30am , to find out how the new wonder bag had performed , oh! dear not a happy bunny , the friday afternoon shift at snugpak had not bothered to put their usual care and attention into this particular one .
As this is a family forum at times i cant repeat the statement that our nameless colleague chose to release , needless to say choice woodland words .
Still as the following night was about 8 degrees warmer , i thought i would approach him again , oh dear ! still smarting , but in all fairness to snugpak , you do have to get into the thing properly , not between the linings , if you know what i mean ?
I haven't laughed so much as when granny caught her boobs in the mangel !!
Sorry Paul (oops! )
Nice one Arry , and thankyou Paul for offloading them or whatever you do ! they are a lovely reminder of another great weekend on sunny Dartmoor ,
did anyone notice big Al having a wee in the background of one ?
Its a great idea to keep your photos in a bucket , modern technology eh ?

Yes, I saw that too. My question is: Why is Dave taking a picture of Lucy's bottom from that angle? He was s'ppose to be kissing her under the mistletoe! :)
Oh while i remember , sincere apologies to Dean , who was intending joining us for a brew and a wander , unfortunately we didn't have a contact number for you ( i think i pm'd you mine ? ) and those with fancy phones could not access the tintertweb to let you know what was going on .
Hopefully the inclement weather mean't that you did not have a wasted journey , as you can see it was an interesting w/e , and hopefully you will be able to make Dartmoor 5 , early in the new year .

Been having a good look at those super photos and realise from all the big smiles on my face just how much I value these meets and the super company, and what fantastic fun they are. Okay so I might have the odd life-risking experience and become semi-conscious - but gosh that is a small price to pay in return for the opportunity to sit in the rain with you guys and listen to some dubious jokes.
Roll on next year and more meets and next time I will remember not to come in just the evening dress and high heels with matching clutch bag - sensed it might not be quite enough for December, but a girl has to look her best!
I too am looking forward to Dave's photos (I think). Feel free Dave to show the ambulance ones - what little pride I still had was lost that night so nothing else to lose now!

More like Godfrey from Dad's Army.
Then just as we were tucking in to our sausage and bacon rolls , the plod turned up !! treated us as if we were terrorists, asked us if we were armed
Hope you offered them round & a brew?
What were they like with your sharps etc? or were they only interested in firearms?
After much radio work and a call to the owner of the wood ( not naming them or the warden etc ) it was decided that we should be evicted forthwith.
That made me chuckle a bit, had they turned up at our Brockwell September meet they would have still been cataloging our "arms" (sharps) at their shift change
The site game keeper wandered through our camp on the Sunday morning as there had been an incident between two other groups of people & he wanted to know if we'd been affected too, having got to the end of our pitch he was chatting to us and said that when he noticed how many blokes there were in our group & the assortment of sharps he wasn't in the slightest bit surprised they hadn't bothered us & only stuck to a "soft target".
Haaving rear the rest of the posts, sounds like a fun meet. :)
LOL, better call 'Arry for some IT support :D
Sorry this situation would require Special Help (SH) IT and I can't do thhat when i'm falling off my chair!!
Hi Vandeen,
I think it was a worried dogwalker , that had called the Police , the warden was fine just doing his job , in answer to your questions.
It was a little worrying to see two burly coppers making a beeline for us , and to be honest they approached with a little caution , i suppose when you have packs , tarps , bedding etc all laid out and you are dressed in a bushcraft fashion ! it does look a bit wierd to those that don't get it , they were a bit aggressive at first , separated us , a bit good cop bad cop ! and whilst waiting for radio confirmation that we weren't wanted criminals , they asked if we were armed , we said no , any air rifles , cattys etc ? no , then asked what the mora was for , i explained , then he kicked a black bin liner ( for rubbish removal ) and said whats in there ? i said my pillow !
Then the one who was about 15 said, thats not very Ray Mears , i then said they were both welcome to a roll , and to stay the night to see what it was all about , they both declined , by this time the mood had lightened , at this point they wished us well and retreated to the relative warmth of the squad car .
In all seriousness, i know they have a job to do , and we could have been anybody , it was just a little strange to start off with .
Its funny how the week before they hadn't fancied walking a lot deeper in the wood , At 2.00am , after a report of 2 wierdos camping ! Instead they phoned Adams family ( via car reg details ) to confirm who we were and what we were up to . pair of wusses .
Oi Bushwhacker ! Godfrey ! dont see the resemblance at all , just remember although he appeared mild mannered, he once tried to strangle his own son ! flashbacks of his traumatic time at the Somme .
Everyone around him , knew you couldn't wake him up quickly as he could jump into soldier /attack mode , so just watch out .
I am not sure which is the worst character i have been likened to, feel free to add to the list , one that makes me laugh most , coupled with Katies idea of the funniest , wins a small prize.

If anyone has any second hand gear they want to sell - layers/waterproofs, tarps and hammocks, sleeping bags, (4 season) bivvy bags, slings etc. please let me know what you have and how much (know how you guys love to upgrade!) I'm not proud - they don't need to be this year's latest all singing and dancing kit, just warm and effective is great. Think I will keep off the ground and well wrapped up next year and restore some of my credibility if I can. Only reason to sleep on the ground will be the fun of a hand-made shelter sometimes.

Hey Lucy , the ad thing should only be there until you log in, might make a few more visitors join ! i for one hope it does not become on here full time , any way business is business.
I probably know of a nearly new sleeping bag , going cheap soon , only used twice ! can't divulge owner yet though !
Glad you are feeling better , roll on 2012 , in particular Dartmoor 5.
Anyway there is nothing wrong with ground dwelling !

Lucy, I think your greatest contributing factors were....
Lack of food during the day and evening (your body needs the fuel to burn)
Lack of head gear (true, the 80% of body heat is NOT lost through the head, but through ALL extremities)
Lack of gloves (for the above, bracketed reason)
Lack of layers (a good pair of thermals, is always a good idea)
Most of those things can be worn inside your sleeping bag, if it gets really cold, as long as you don't make yourself sweat.

Huh! Nuffin' wrong with my new bag. It's a great bag...... Just not quite all it was cracked up to be. :sigh:
Seriously now: You didn't get cold at night Lucy, so I don't think you need to change your sleeping system. You might want to revue your day wear for winter time though. A warm two-piece full length base-layer set will only set you back about 20 squid. Not very alluring maybe..... but toastie, which is the important thing. A lot of heat is lost through the head (quotes vary but about 30%) so you might wanna put a beanie on your shopping list too.
Hope you don't mind me saying, but we don't want any more of this - :stretcher:
Roll on Dartmoor 5.

I hadn't seen what Adam had written when I wrote my post. But it seems we are both singing from the same hymn-sheet. :)
The quoted "10% heat loss" through the head is only because the rest of your body is (normally) covered. ( your head is roughly 9% of your body, or so I am told) Wear a hat but no gloves, and you’ll still lose massive amount of heat through your exposed hands.(hands are 2% of the body surface) Layers is the answer, right from the outset you need to think layers, first you need a good compression layer (Aldi sell leggings and tops for under a £10 each) a wicking layer, a windproof layer and if necessary a waterproof layer. Good shoes/boot and two thin pairs of socks. If it’s not too cold then wear thin lightweight gloves( boots sell cotton gloves for a couple of pounds and they are cheap enough to throw away if they get ruined) a scarf and a beanie hat, as it get colder then think over gloves, and a thicker scarf and windproof hat. When it gets really cold then wear mittens.
YMMV

Agree with Paul and Mr Pole here. goodjob
As mentioned by Tadpole, thinner socks are best, as your toes need to be able to move freely, which greatly aids circulation (same with fingers) and warmth.
Scarfs are a good idea, as overlapping layers will keep heat loss to a minimum, as well as stopping drafts.

Maybe if we tell her enough times, she will listen....then again....woman :p
All great advice chaps, in Lucys defence , she will by her own admission , not have the most comprehensive kit , which between us we can sort .
A couple of other factors were, that she was getting over a nasty chest infection, she had lost a bit of weight due to that and the stress she had been under , finishing her course work and holding down a full time job , also her proper walking boots were wet , so she wore steelys !
I did offer her a sleep mat , but being as hard as nails she refused, and finally she does not drink alcohol from one meet to the next , and we all know what that can do .
As said before some valuable lessons learned from the experience, it turned out ok ! and we must ensure it never happens again .
Hers too good a member of the gang to lose !!

Ok, seriously, I thought something similar on looking at the pictures, and prevention for next time is always good. Life teaches lessons, and in this case no lasting harm was done. Good advice given out here, and I'm sure it will be heeded by all of us, not just Lucy. I'm planning a winter camp more or less solo after Christmas, and this is a timely reminder to make sure I prepare appropriately in terms of kit and pack the right resources in terms of food supplies.

Appreciate all of the sound advice and had given myself a good talking to about only eating three small oatcakes between the evening before and the turkey that evening, and should have got the kettle and had my usual frequent hot drinks. Got careless with the clothing, didn't take into account the nearly two months of chest problems (no jokes please), subsequent lack of sleep and huge weight loss , kept taking my hat off, let my hands get cold when I was shifting wet wood in the morning and never warmed them properly again, left my decent boots at home as they were very wet - the list goes on.... After a lifetime of outdoor living/working and never suffering even slightly from hypothermia, I was taken aback by the speed and intensity.
A very sick bunny before I got there and a very stupid one when I was there.
The good thing is that I found it out by making a mistake on myself and not someone else I was responsible for. I won't be making that stupid sort of mistake again! Will start knitting myself a scarf to keep me busy until the next meet!
Ground dwelling is fine, just not a big fan of stuffy tents. Feels a lot nicer in a hammock.
Will be taking all of your comments on board xx
Instead of knitting a scarf buy a metre square of the nicest Egyptian cotton cloth you fancy, hem it. And use that, more versatile you can use it as a head scarf or a neck scarf, wrap it round your neck, face, head, tuck it under your hat or wear it like Laurence of Arabia. And it can double as a swimming costume if you are brave or daft enough to want to go swimming in the winter… :o

I'm sure you are well aware of planning, etc, but remember to tell several people where you're going, when you expect to be back, make check in calls at certain times, always have an escape plan :).
Solo journeys can be dangerous at any time of the year, but winter is when most go wrong. Typically, mostly due to hypothermia, as us folk in this country don't feel it ever gets that cold, that quickly. Also, if you are driving to a location, pack plenty of spare food and clothes in the vehicle, just in case you find yourself snowed in, and have to haul up in the motor for a while. No gas stoves in the tent, no matter how cold or windy it is, carbon monoxide is a killer in confined spaces, especially around ground level (where you'll be sleeping).
Be safe buddy, and hope you have a great time.

Oh yes, definately. I've done this a lot previously, but that doesn't mean it can't go wrong this time. I checked out the intended site this time last year in about 3 feet of snow, so I know what resources are available in bad weather (and if it is worse than that I won't be able to get there!), and there is a bothy a few hundred yards away too. Also a road within easy distance and some habitation. Basically a quiet spot but close to walker traffic if I need to flag someone down. My wife is fully aware of the plans and my location, and knows the place herself too. In the event, I'm not afraid to bug out if it gets unpleasant. This is about having fun, not raw survival. Wife will drop me off and pick me up, as she needs the car herself during the intended period.
Thanks for the kind words of advice. I'll post pics after the event.

If there is someone on here who hasn't done something stupid outdoors at some point, then I haven't met them yet. It is just that sometimes you get away with it, and sometimes you don't. I got away with mine, but only just. I learned more from that single experience than the other 25 years outdoors have taught me.

Unless it's very cold, gloves and socks are more about comfort, maintaining a good core temp is most important as when temp drops, your blood will move away from extremities to your core to feed your main organs. Your Head however is the main organ and has a massive blood supply. So body first, and then head then hands and feet. Important to insulate from ground too, even sitting you lose heat quicker through ground than air. Re food... All about calories rather than volume hence the Inuit high fat diet. The perfect excuse for chocolate :)

Just to second this, the brain has a constant blood supply, unlike other organs, so head loss from the head is not reduced in cold weather by blood withdrawing. to the core (if it did, you would pass out).

I'm Not a doctor, Nor do I play one in a soap, but if'n you'd like to google "heat loss BMJ" you find an article on heat loss by the british medical journal. (second one down is fun)
jonajuna
17-12-2011, 11:16
both those articles fail to mention the issue we have already broached here....
when your temperature starts to drop, your vascular system contracts and slows/restricts the blood supply to the extremities as these, while rather important, can be sacrificed to ensure the essientials of the body continue to recieve warm oxygenated blood. in addition, if this process didnt occur, your blood would actively draw heat away from your core speeding up the loss of heat. this process is complicit in the issue of frost bite, its not just about the cold, as the cold could be offset by constant suply of warm blood... so food, core wamrth and preservation heat by insulation elsewhere will slow the progress of frost bite
re your head, as mentioned it is one of those essiential organs that unlike a foot or arm, you cannot live without. the blood supply doesnt, at first reduce to the brain the same way as it does to the limbs... though as the core temp drops, the same process will apply... hence the confusional state, slurring of words, lack of co-ordination.... all caused by a reduction of the blood supply to the brain.
the body is an amazing thing and will change and adapt as rapidly as it can to prolong and preserve its existence. of course there will come a point when the blood supply to the brain slows to such an extent you become comatose.. you are then completely unable to withdraw to safety and night night irene... but your body is still trying to save itself by doing that,, withdrawing the last of the heat and warm blood to the core to feed the most important organ, the heart (ok yes, you cant live without a brain either, but your heart can still pump warm blood round your body as long as it still has some coming to it.. head or not!)
so as i said, warm core, with a warm head gives the best chance of maintianing a good core temp. while you loose lots through your head, i dont know how much, but i do know you will continue to loose heat through your head long after your extremities have turned off the radiator vales
btw, i will happily question the "surgeon" on yahoo who states you will bleed out from any surface vascular bleed. does he not know about the clotting process that our blood cells and fibrin very convientiantly undertake for us? if that didnt happen, we would bleed out from any wound. vascular blood is not under pressure unlike arteial and the lack of goss muscle in the scap further slows the vascular ebb and flow. head wounds just look bad, a combination of lots of capillaries, tight skin and hair combined with the different type of soft tissues in the scalp that dont lend themselves to constricting the veins (hence the lack of vasoconstriction in the early stages of the cold to an extent too) as you find in more muscular parts of the body.... direct pressure to a scalp wound mimics the action of vasoconstriction, slows the flow and allows clotting to take place. though most scalp wounds over half inch will will require suturing to close them up.....
i am not a doctor, nor should this be a substitute for proper (face to face rather than the interweb) medical advice or treatment but i do have a day to day working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, though mostly from the neck up and as it goes, a bit of hepatology, immunology and the vascular system
jonajuna
17-12-2011, 11:41
and just to prove my point from the article in the gaurdian where a couple of peadiatricians set out in an "feature" in the BMJ (read that as tabloid article)
the links for ease......
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/dec/17/medicalresearch-humanbehaviour
which cites the BMJ article
http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a2769.full
which draws from a study:
http://jap.physiology.org/content/101/2/669?ijkey=896724fd0ea6cdcbc7e7 80402269c327ac6d74de&keytype2=tf_ipsecsha&linkType=ABST&journalCode=jap&resid=101/2/669
which concluded that core temp loss was expidiated by heat loss through the head and in the responses to the BMJ article a clincial physiologist (whose whole knowledge is about the physiological process of the body rather than child doctors (and any doctor will tell you a child dont work the same as the rest of the human race.. hence hardly any drugs actually have a license for use on children, their physiology is really quite different)

Fairy lights last several days, on 3 AA batteries...
Wood burns much better with chainsaw oil on it...

Ivan, you need to name the next meet. We need something to plan for again!
Hello Everyone.
Didn't know where else to post this , without bugging all, but i sort of consider this my area !! Just wanted to say that as most of you know i have had a mixed year , ups and downs , but thanks obviously to discovering this site , i have met online and more importantly in person , some of the kindest , supportive most genuine friends i could wish for .
I am not going to name individuals as it would take too long and i know i would forget someone important !! But just a huge thankyou for your friendship and help , with making what ,we all love doing such a much more rewarding experience.
I would never believed , through joining a website , that in little over a year you could form such a bond and learn and laugh so much with people you had never met before , and that your first meeting would be in a woods on Dartmoor !! Tells you how much i know about life !
Anyway i won't go on , just to say thanks for being there , whether it be phone, pm, on here in general or in person. You are all star bars as a certain cockney member would say.
Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy new year , and heres to plenty more meets and get togethers in 2012 , as you know i don't put things as eloquently in writing as when talking !! so as usual excuse spellin , grammar etc , but i think you get the gist !
I will announce Dartmoor 5 ( haven't thought of a witty title yet ) early in the new year , coz i for one am itching to getting out again soon .
If we have half as much fun as in 2010 , that will do for me !
Once again many thanks chaps and chapesses, for just being YOU !!
Love and all things bushy

My younger son gave me a new very decent coat for bushcrafting in. Two very appropriate and effective layers that will keep me totally dry and toasty warm, and in a tasteful dark green - so a super start for next year's meets, and staying alive through them all. What a great son he is! Clearly software developers who don't get out in the wild much are actually more savvy to the ways of bushcrafters than I realised - must be because he walks a very long way to work every day, by choice and in all weathers, and is in tune with the elements!
Hope you all had a great christmas.
Lucy x
While the festive season is still upon us , and i wasn't sure where else to post this , my good old bushcrafting pal Adam got wind i was to be on my own for Christmas, kindly offered to come down and suggested we spent a couple of days in the woods .
Well that certainly cheered me up ! so we ended up in a woods owned by a good mate of ours , on the eastern fringes of Dartmoor , got set up and settled in for Christmas in the woods !
Great weekend , great grub , great company and a good old whistle stop tour of a bit of the moor on Christmas Day, took a bit of footage of our excursion , so when Adam has chance i am sure he will find a suitable place to post .
Was supposed to be finished off in Wales with some good pals of ours , but didn't work out , think those boys are enjoying themselves as we speak ! Hope so .
Anyway just putting the finishing touches to announcing a few possible dates for meets ahead . At least one beach , as that was fun , a couple of places on Dartmoor , and of course the usual handful of gatherings at camp Dartmoor The HQ ...
Well hope you all had a magic Christmas and santa brought you what you wanted ..
If there are any dates that are a serious no no for any of you , just let me know and we will try and work around them , if not looking forward to shouting out some dates to get the Dartmoor Granite Ball Rolling !
Ivan....
Was on the moor today getting some post Christmas fresh air rehab :) found a brand new millbank bag! good old Santa Dartmoor.
Looking forward to the forth coming gatherings and as you probably know any dates are normally ok for me.

I've got no dates I need to avoid Ivan. Nice to hear that you are considering another beach meet some time in the year - nothing like a cold swim to get over the absinthe! Looking forward to some good meets and good company in beautiful surroundings. Roll on 2012.

urgh to JD and sadly i didnt get (or buy as was hoping for a bottle for xmas/birthday) any tequila, i do however have a litre of smirnoff red that will remain full even after NYE (i have another half bottle to get through yet ;) )
so whens it gonna be? im gagging to get out and try my hammock now i have left the ground for the trees :) may have a non bushy friend who wants to come along and see what things us weirdos do, he's a sound chappy, not adverse to the outdoors ways of sitting round a camp fire in the evenings getting sloshed! lol
Hi Jon , and other interested parties, Skate and I are , having a bimble to a site on Saturday , have spoken to the owners and looks very promising, we will report back on here after we have had a good wander , would not be prudent to give the location as it might not be suitable , safe to say if you want to google somewhere very close , its Ramshorn Down , common land in the Dartmoor National Park , only issue is fire of course , but subject to my diplomatic skills ! A site very close could be good .
Failing that , good old faithful , will be called upon , two slight issues , are farmers requirements due to possible inclement weather ( unlikely ) and we would have to all muck in on a firewood hunt !
How does 13th - 15th Jan 2012 or 20th - 22nd Jan sound ? ....
Ivan...
Ps most importantly , with negotiations for use of the site , there might be a slight increase in cost , sorry out of my hands ..
Feedback , appreciated, as that has been the bit holding me back !!

as long as the price paid is in hard cash and not any of your usual campsite favours, i'm in ;)
Ivan my bud, you must stop the stressing, itll make you go grey :) a few quid to get to camp in wild woods, away from the hoards polluting commercial sites, with good friends made and yet to be made, is a few quid well spent. i doubt anyone would feel they are being ripped off, and if anyone did feel they couldnt afford/justify spending what ever the cost would be, they know upfront so would choose to not come along on that occassion. its not as if you get everyone there and then walk round saying "£50 or get orf me land"

I'm up for either weekend, but the sooner you decide the better for me, so that I can fix something else I have to do for the weekend you don't have the meet (if you see what I mean!)
Nice one Ivan, for having kept the bushcraft crew together and overcome lots of obstacles this year. I'm sure that many others would agree, and some have already stated, that we owe you a lot for your good humour, generosity and kindness, and will be happy to follow you into your new ventures and new locations. x

Thanks Adam , stirling job as ever , shame about the weather as we were planning to give you all a better tour of some of the local sites , still you get the gist , we did get chance to see a bit more but wind noise and water on the lens , made it horrible viewing .
A Christmas day i won't forget , thanks mate.
Oh! by the way did you pick up the kindling tenners ? only i can't seem to find them anywhere !
Ivan....
