View Full Version : Rough Close Meet ~ January 2012

decorum
14-11-2011, 19:24
Meet date: 27 ~ 29 January 2012 ~ Arrival time is from 16:00 on the 27th.

TOILET FACILITIES: The two toilet blocks nearest our pitch will have been closed for the winter to prevent damage to frozen pipes. Toilets will be available at both the Norton Cabin and the Main Toilet block (near the Campers Car Park).

WATER FACILITIES: Due to recent temperatures I think that it is safe to assume that, as they're uninsulated, the taps near our pitch have been turned off and drained. It would be sensible for each person to bring in some potable water.

As per usual, the location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.btck.co.uk/).
At the moment site fees are <<<>>> it is possible that the site might announce a price rise between now and the New Year.

Price has just been revised for 2012 ~ linky thing (http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows. net/site1875/List/RC%20Price%20List%202012.pdf) ~ the price has risen by £0.20 to £4.60 per person per night

Please pay on arrival. If you haven't been before, someone will be able to point you in my direction.

The 'Helpful Info:' makes our Meets seem to be overly regulated. Don't worry, it isn't ~ it's just to try to preempt the very rare 'If we're not allowed to ..., why didn't it say so in the Meet thread?' excuse/reaction/comment. Most of it

Edits will be highlighted in red and italicised.

We are booked onto The Leader Training Field.

Please Note: There is not enough space for everyone to leave their vehicles in the bays adjacent to the pitch and, after unloading, vehicles will need to be parked up in the Campers Car Park.

In the pic below, the virtual tent placement pin marks the position of the Leader Training Field. The Red line marks the approximate route of the main track which leads to the main access point to the pitch.

I have put a couple of extra details onto the map ~ toilets, water etc and I'm leaving both RED (for Leader Training) and BLUE (for PC11) routes on for both ease and for reference ;) . Both toilet blocks at the top of the site (ie those nearest our pitch) have now been closed down for the winter period. This is to try to prevent damage to pipe work if this winter hits as hard as the forecasts suggest ~ the two other toilet/shower blocks will remain open.

City of Coventry Scout County
Rough Close Scout Campsite

OS: Grid Ref: SP264779 (Site Access) SP266786 (Site Centre)

This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome ~ please see 'Helpful info'.

Helpful info:

The list isn't exhaustive - common sense applies. If in doubt, ask.

Any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which is above the camping fees will be automatically considered to be a donation to Rough Close campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.
Forum members are responsible for themselves*, the kit they use and their own actions (and any non member accompanying them) at the Meet. * This includes meals and cooking. It is up to each registered member to make sure that they have enough suitable food for their stay and and also for planning/arranging for any replenishment if/as need be.
Under 18's must be accompanied by at least one parent or legal guardian.
You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee ~ The sites bin is the big orange/red thing in the Camper’s Car Park.
When visiting others, do not leave your rubbish in their pitch (or in a communal area) ~ take it with you and dispose of it yourself. The site's bin is the big orange/red thing in the Camper’s Car Park.
Please refreain from burning rubbish on a fire that's being used to cook on.
There is no communal bin in the Communal Area.
Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited! Please don't walk through another groups pitch whilst drinking alcohol and/or smoking.
Please keep ‘colourful language’ reasonable and to a reasonable volume.
After unloading, vehicles need to be parked up in the campers car park.
Wood fires must be raised and contained. Periodically there is a shortage of wood available to burn - if you want to cook on an open fire, bring a supply of wood or charcoal.
Due to changes in site policy, we cannot cut down standing dead wood. The same goes for green wood ~ damaged or not.
It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.
In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site; outstanding fees will still be owed.
Noise levels after 11 p.m need to be respectful of other campers desire to sleep at socially accepted hours.
Noise levels before 07:30 a.m need to be respectful of other campers desire to have a bit of a lie in.
Chopping (or cracking/snapping etc) wood at 'silly o'clock' is not acceptable. Please make sure that you prepare wood for the start of the next day well before dusk ~ and if you can't be sure, bring an alternative method of heating water/cooking.
Morning Prayers will be held at 09.30 on the Saturday Morning ~ attendance of this meeting might be advantageous to you but attendance of it is in no way mandatory.
The Morning Prayers meeting is just a verbal notice board and isn't, in any way, a religious _thing_.
Reading the info above the site map is a good idea http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/winking/winking0011.gif

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

It's fine if you want to:

be on your own
lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over etc
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that :lmao:
practice flora and fauna ID
so on and so forth ...
This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.
Copy and paste yada yada ...

Woodland Ways are running a special offer for their Winter Skills course.

http://www.woodland-ways.co.uk/blog/desert-trips/january-special-offers/

The course is held in a 250 acre private woodland just outside a village called Appleton, Oxfordshire. And the cost is £195 for every two people - £97.50 each. Does anybody fancy giving it a go - seems a good price for a weekend of training and it is reasonably near.

It is the weekend 17 - 19 February - before the next North Wood meet

If no takers from this posting then I will probably put up separate one somewhere - applications need to be in by 5 Jan

If you fancy it and are available etc pse PM me - if more than one then I will make up a 'twosome' (!!!) with whoever's PM is timed first

By the way, I have checked with Damian to see if he is running a course at his site

http://woodsmanbushcraft.co.uk/index.php?id=1

and he says

"I would normally do a winter course, but with the weather being so mild, it kind of defeats the object, .............................. ......We have a date in February (3rd) which we normally do as the winter course, but at the moment this is looking as a non-runner due to lack of numbers."

It is looking more likely that I will be able to make this meet, but I won't be certain until the w/e of the 20th and hope this won't cause difficulties in me adding my name at the last minute (rather than as last time adding then removing it)?

Also, if I do manage to organise myself sufficiently, will there be a facility to bring surplus kit for swap or for sale as I have seen on previous occasions?

Best regards

The site has, in the last couple of days, revised their prices for 2012 and there will be a small increase in our fees.

The fees for 2012 have been set at £4.60 (http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows. net/site1875/List/RC%20Price%20List%202012.pdf) per person per night ~ a rise of £0.20

I'm new to BCUK and am interested in attending a meet. Could somebody give me info of location and what the format is? Is it a wildcamping?

TinkyPete
15-01-2012, 19:21
The site is a Scout camp, there is wash block and toilet facilities on site as well as a water tap. you will need to bring your own food, something to sleep in or on (there is room for both ground dwellers (tarp or tent) or swingers (hammockers), wood fires must be raised or leave no ground scar, but you can use most types of cookers there. If you read post 1 it does give you a lot of the information you need. Any extra questions please ask away.

Pete's pretty much summed it up in a nutshell :notworthy ~ but I'll add that wood fires absolutely must be raised and contained. The site is pretty much built on leaf mulch of one type or another and it's far easier to have a ongoing blanket 'raised and contained' than it is to have a here's okay for ground fires unless it hasn't rained for 'x' days, in which case you need to go over to ... (etc).

If you haven't already, have a read of post #01 and have a look through previous Meets pics threads will give a potted summary of the type of thing to reasonably expect to see going on ;)

Spikey, are you bringing ear plugs this time?

Note to all, due to the recent freezing temperatures it would be considered wise to have brought at least some potable water with you :o :D . The taps at the main toilet block will be fine for getting water but, as it's across the site from the pitch, if you've brought some with you it saves a job when setting up ;) .

We don't normally invoke the curse of Twang Twang by talking about the weather for a Meet but, as we have so many first timers down to come allong to this one ...

I would advise keeping an eye on weather forecasts. It's likely to be cold this weekend ~ but whether it'll be cold and dry / wet / snowy / sleety/ windy / sunny seems to be changing by the hour.

There is an old adage: Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst ;) .

Prepare for the worst ;).

Hope its going to be nice, It going to be novel not to wake up covered in frost LOL which seems to be the norm at the moment.

It's always nice to wake up in the woods* . As far as what weather we'll get? It's all a bit Russian Roulette as to what we get at the moment isn't it :lmao: .

Sorry I can't make it this time but I have to be in the warm and dry 'tasting' whiskey - well ... somebody's got to do it

You don't have to be in the warm and dry to taste whisky Chris... by a campfire in the woods is a perfectly acceptable place to do said activity ;)

?Does it make a difference when I tell you there are 12 whisk(e)ys to choose from - plus a whiskey liqeur - one each from the 'David Wishart' classification method, plus some duplicates

No, absolutely not ~ it's always better if you add a fire (Unless, of course, you're Joan of Arc).

Time for a tidy up of the list ...

By adding your name you acknowledge that you have read and will comply with post #01 of this thread and accept that it can (and probably will) be edited before the Meet.

Meet List:

decorum
udamiano
Mesquite
bushcraftsurvival
TinkyPete (TBC)
Wayland
Teepee
Outdoory (poss +1)
leaf man (possible +1)
Snowfire
Spikey DaPikey (TBC)

Remember to bring in some potable water if you can. Doing so will probably save you time and effort ~ drinking water will be available at the main toilet block but, over the winter season, the stand pipe tap supply is turned off and drained to prevent frost damage.

Sorry Guys due to work I will not be able to attend this meet. I have to work on Saturday for a major inspection for all our kit at work. Because we are loosing a couple of months due to Operation Olympics so our schedule has been shortened. Hope you have a great time out in the woods I will be jealous of you all. I can not even look out onto any woods as I have no windows in my work :(

A few pics ~ after taking pics of my set up for the 15 Items Challenge, I put the camera away and promptly forgot to take any more over the weekend :o .

Home for the weekend ~ pup tent (item 1) used as a tarp. The small rectangular bag at the front of the shelter is the IPK's storage bag ~ it was utilised as a make shift kneeling pad.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7023/6785093041_edf4dac5f5.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785093041/)

My pack (item 2) had it first real life water proof check :D . Dry bags and stuff sacks are stored in the pack. The FAC, gloves and hat are on the standard clothing and safety 'free' items.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7148/6785093835_e501d3e684.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785093835/)

Saw (item 3), Clipper knife (item 4) on my sleeping bag (item 5). I had originally planned on taking my opinel saw but, in the end, opted for a full scale Silky 'just in case' ~ opi would have sufficed :o :) .

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7154/6785094345_f1e6553623.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785094345/)

Food (item 6) ~ I had based my plans around cooking predominently on the fire-box* and the Norgie was there to make sure that things didn't freeze over night ;) . Stove (item 7) was there for fast hot drinks :D . IPK (item 8) ground sheet. The cooking pot (item 9) has the advantage of having a lid that can double up as a cup. Also just visible is my kip mat (item 10).

* The ground is pretty much all leaf mold and, as such, ground fires need to be avoided. As all fires need to be raised and contanined, the fire-box is considered a safety freebie.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6785095017_6a7958c7ed.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785095017/)

My Not-So-Purple UCO (item 11) with spare tea lights in the metal case below it. Spatula (item 12) served in place of a spoon. Dry food is stored in a lock and lock food storage box or leather clad zip lock bags.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7007/6785435921_7fecf2dbfa.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785435921/)

Poncho (safety freebie) was definitely useful/needed for a couple of hours on Friday  .

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7171/6785095987_6b42ff509a.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785095987/)

The weekend's water was carried in. Chair (item 13) is a great asset at a Meet :approve: and some level of insulation is a great boon at this time of year :lmao: .

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7027/6785096497_c1453f3c0d.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785096497/)

Fire-irons (item 14) were used to support the cooking pot. The irons break down into two shorter lengths. Not pictured is my lighter (item 15).

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7159/6785097031_d1b0fe3825.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785097031/)

The fire-box is a French army surplus first aid box ~ out of pic is the lid. Box has been modified to make the lid removable.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7166/6785097545_0ae949f9a6.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59592399@N07/6785097545/)

At some point I'll transfer the pics over to the 15 items thread ~ but sticking them here might show Meet newbies that they don't need 'all the kit' to come to a Meet :D .

Thank for looking.

Cheers Sam, it's early days for the challenge ;) . The changeable weather has been _interesting_ and it wasn't until Friday morning that I finally and absolutely decided to do the '15 Items' challenge. I've got a couple of self set personal challenges to do and had the weather been forecast to be warmer I'd have been doing a fair weather challenge instead :o ~ I'd have then done the 15 items sometime in February or March :D .

I'd purposely held off from confirming in thread that I was up for it :sad6: .

where did you pick up the pup tent from? looks like i could have a use for one

I've had it for years. The fabric is more than slightly weird ~ the two sides have a sort of magnetic velcro attraction to each other and to themselves as well :o .
If I'm honest, it's not the best choice I've ever made and I really should modify it into something more useful ~ a canvas pup would probably be a better, if heavier, choice.

man_of_tanith
30-01-2012, 00:35

Remind me just prior to the March Meet and I'll bung it in the boot for you to have a play with (and see whether you can cope with the madding attraction of the fabric) ~ I 'lost' the poles some years back :o but replacements should be easily fabricated.
As a tent it's cheap and cheerful. It's dark all day inside and buttoning the door up from the inside is irksome.
