View Full Version : burl???
can anyone tell me what a tree burl is?and also what is a noggin????.thanks :)
A burl's a rounded knot or growth on a tree. The way the grain is laid makes it less prone to splitting and rather decorative.
A noggin is a mug or a cup.

I don't want to sound like a nag, but did you use the search function?
For instance, doing a search for "burl" would have turned up this thread among others

Noggin is a bit more difficult. Basically its a wooden cup or jug with a handle, all carved from one piece of wood. The wood does not need to be a burl. If you Google for Noggin and Wood you get some hits too.

In carpentry, a noggin is also a short horizontal piece of wood that ties two studs (vertical timbers that form a wall) together. :)

Don't forget the slang "use yer noggin" meaning use your head - probably derives from the wood between two studs (ears). :)

Seconded, they also go between joists.
