hiya, :christmas1:
This meet we will be at lower end of north wood parking will be on CP3. or if the weather prevents this, (see last year!) (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65960) those who want to can drop off their gear (see map link below) and return their car to CP1.
There will be some planned maintenance similar to the last meet for those who want to take part, its never an issue if you would rather chill, have a wander, practice skills or just nod off!, entirely voluntary :D
Ok as before, just a reminder of terms and directions.
fees
recently we have had to increase the fees more or less in line with comparable sites. after talks with Gordon, (the farmer) it has been agreed that the new fees will be pegged for the next year, please pay on arrival or as soon as is practicable. I don’t want to be chasing people for fees as they’re packing up!
• 18+............. £5 per night,
• Aged 12~17 .....£3 per night
• Under 12 ..........free.
Fires
After discussions amongst the 'North Wood Regulars' it has been decided to introduce a communal fire.
We feel in order to maintain our supply of free wood it is imperative that we act now. North Wood is getting known and seems to be gaining in popularity, what none of us want is to end up in a year or so with a sterile wood. You have left your pitches in impeccable order, no blame is to be attached to yourselves but with anything up to a possible 20+ individual fires whether for warmth or cooking, stocks will rapidly dwindle.
To ensure the future of North Wood as a camping, bushcraft venue, and to conserve the continuing stocks of wood for the communal areas, the following conditions will apply;
Wood collected and processed during the course of the meet is for use in the communal fire area (excluding small sticks, twigs) so that everyone benefits, or in some cases for the use of the farmer.
If you want to bring in your own Honey Stoves, hobo stoves, twig, small stick burners (thumb size) and the like, they are acceptable providing they have sufficient ground clearance or protection to prevent scaring. Pit fires or similar are not acceptable.
Modified jerry can (or similar) stoves, tent/tipi/lavvu stoves and the like are not acceptable unless you bring a sufficient amount of fuel for your needs for the duration of the meet.
live wood is to be left untouched, unless of course there's planned maintenance, in which case it will go to the communal fire or any projects.
With all the dead wood to hand, I know it’s going to be tempting to carry on using it for individual fires, I’m hoping this is going to be self regulating however if individuals blatantly ignore this, they will not be invited back.
This is not negotiable, If you require clarification on what is acceptable, drop me a pm.
I hope I have explained my motives for these actions clearly. They have been put in place to ensure the longevity of North Wood as a venue.
Rubbish
we’re still here on trial so it really is a case of leaving no junk / fire scars etc. the only thing we should leave is a good impression, take your rubbish home, there are no facility’s to leave it on the farm.
There have been odd occasions when other peoples rubbish has had to be disposed of, If you brought it in, it’s up to you to dispose of it. No exceptions.
Under 18s
Are to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, guests or minors will be the responsibility of the person who bought, invited them,
Restricted areas
A small section on the approach to north wood is sssi, unless otherwise instructed this will be marked and out of bounds, as will a small area within the wood which is personal to the farmer and is strictly out of bounds, see map link below.
Access
[*=1]Access is from 1200 on the given date unless we have made prior arrangements to get in earlier. For security reasons the electronic gates will be closed overnight from 1900 to 0800 and all day Sunday, possible late or early arrivals feel free to pm me for the gate code. We will vacate the site no later than 1300. On whatever day the meet ends
[*=1]The gate from the farm yard into the meadow must be kept closed at all times, if you open it you close it,
[*=1]the fields on the approach to the wood are sometimes hired out to a private company. if on arrival there is any activity on the meadow between CP1 and the wood, and you need to unload or park your vehicle on CP2 or CP3, keep to the track and proceed with caution at 15mph

Love these meets.
PREPER............. :)
Hi Guys,
Need some advise, I have a 2 season sleeping bag, which I am going to used in a tent with a inflatable mattress. Will this be enough too keep me warm on this moot.
Regards,
Phil
i would say no last december meet it droped down to about -14C. for december in the UK i would recoment atleast a 4 seasion bag is your mattress a thermorest typ or a cap 3inch air bed if its a air bed its bad news for winter as your body wont warm that volume of air fast enough and you will get cold. i know form experiance at last years meet i used a 3 seasion bag and air mattress in a tent, as a result of that meet i got a snugpak RE for Xmas and avoid the ground if i can hammock with underquilt. hope this helps.
i now may not be able to make this meet as the wife has just started a new job and its working weekend! :-( but my mother in law is going to be over for xmas by then so i am hoping i can get away still.

hi phil, as karl pointed out it was exeptionaly cold last December, under similar conditions this year i'd say you would be cold with your proposed setup. even if it were milder i would suggest you either get a warmer bag or beef it up with a second bag or duvet/blanket, with ample insulation between you and the floor.

following steves (mesquite) introduction, i have been in contact with paul for the last month with emails and phone about his visit. today i had a nice afternoon with Paul Kirtley and his assistant James, (He was previously Head of Operations at Woodlore) we had a wander around North Wood he was very interested in the SSSI and we had a bit of a tree ID as we walked around.
they arrived today in preparation for a day course tomorrow instructing a disadvantaged group in fire starting, shelter building, bush cooking etc (was going on about your nosh martin)
very nice to meet them, and he suggested his availability re a instructional meet similar to the RC bash. anyway a couple of pics...

Of course they loved it, its a most beautiful wood where you can positively hear the history sung through the trees on the wind :)
I'm wet brine-ing a noggin of silverside to jerky incase we get to play with that, let me know what else we can bring to help out! Basing recipe on http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/printerfriendly/CORNED-BEEF-50022461 as my recipe is salted by dry rubbing which I understand makes the beef too 'fall apart' for jerkying. I'd seen jerky done with corned silverside in the blasphemously titled 'Cooking With Beer' ;)

It's salting as I type so I'll rinse it off a coupla daze early and get it marinading ready for the weekend... although with my knife honing skills, I should probably try putting it between a coupla tarps and rolling the disco over it a few times to flatten it instead of cutting it there ;) Mmmm unless you're offering me a long term let of the wood perchance... ;)

for what its worth, heres the met office forcast for the midlands...
"Starting very unsettled and stormy with a risk of exceptionally strong winds and potentially damaging gusts, perhaps even across parts of the south, this risk peaking around Friday 16th. This will be coupled with heavy rain which may bring flooding to some western areas, with snow an additional risk",
so, just a heads up to expect the worse, and as the regulars will know where we camp is predominantly ash. be aware of whats above you! :(

Fellas. Ive been chatting with Steve and I would like to propose and facilitate a little exercise for the meet next weekend.
The Northwood 'Survival Scenario'
What I propose to do is spend at least 4 hours on saturday tesing the skills of a worst case scenario. The first few hours of survival are always critical and if your like me you will have always wondered 'how would I cope'? Well this is the time to find out guys and I have devised a plan. How this will be done is the time will be divided up into 3 different phases;
1. Cold water emmersion - Spending a minuet or two in one of the ponds in full kit, untill you are good and wet.
2. Immediate response - Preventing hypothermia and building a fire.
3. Camp building - Preparing a camp for the potential of spending a night out.
This is not in anyway a course nor is it a competition, it is just what I believe a good way of testing those all important skills. Feel free to have a go at any of the phases and/or pull out at any time.
The floor is now open for comments/suggestions? :)

last time I was there the ponds where almost dried out, although there must have been rain since, and we may be due a little wetness (I am not Andy :) so no stoning required) the bases were not the cleanness and they could be some nasties in it. As for the other parts as long as long as you do nopt make yourself in a BBQ should be safe :)
On the kit auctions I am game :)

re the ponds, we've had a very dry year water tables are down and ponds are relatively dry. but given the forcast he shouldnt have a problem getting wet  i did express my doubts on any/many taking part, but this is something dave wants to do so it should be an interesting exercise for him. for the sake of reality, should his firelighting prove difficult, he will of course be banned from the communal fire :D

Fair play Dave, that's certainly stepping up to a survival scenario! Far from my idea of a good meet but I'll be there to cheer you on. When you say a full kit immersion does that include your bergan and sleeping bag? I'm nowhere near as hard as I used to think I was, I'm not well right now and that's making me feel even worse just thinking about it! In the interest of common sense I'd personally bring a change of clothes and sleeping bag and come strapped with a jonny before taking the plunge. That's just me though. Will be interesting to see on the day! Nice one...

Back in September i opened up a discussion on the regulars sub forum, the subject was about the possibility of a temporary lifting of restrictions concerning gathering wood for individual fires. This was only for the winter meets of December and February.
The response was mixed about 50/50, some for and others happy the way it was. We also discussed it at the last meet with similar results, my sole reason for suggesting this was a possible repeat of the severity of last Decembers meet and the psychological benefits of having your own fire in such conditions without having to bring big bundles of wood in. :)
So, going on your response coupled with the relatively 'mild' weather, we will stick with our current guidelines. For clarity on these please refer to the relevant heading in post 1. If you want your own fire, anything above thumb size you bring in. Any new or recent members still unsure, just ask me or any of the regulars.
Steve
Just had a look at the list and need to ask; Are there any kids going to this meet?
I need to Give Adam the choice of attending if the weather is looking grim. If he is the solo youngster it will effect his answer.
Cheers.

Not long now change of plan I will be down tomorrow afternoon.
I'll be arriving Friday pm. Wonder if - for the first time - I'll be able to put tent up in the light?!
Any preference for booze? Options from some more Tsiporo (actually I'll bring that anyway - wouldn't seem like a midlands meet without that!), some weird cherry liqueur, a bottle of Russian brandy or some French Calvados............Oh, and save your beer cans - I'll try to remember to bring my penny-burner tool-making kit (scissors and drawing pins) if anyone wants one!

Will.
Depends on how good at scrounging you are:)
Yea it's bring your own food will. sometimes the odd person will do a group meal but I don't think anyone has one planned for this one.
Oh - and if I remember to pack them tonight, I'll be bringing along a couple of Tinny's (minibull Design) alcohol burners if anyone hasn't seen them. These are a tad pricey, but the quality is brilliant, and I want to try out the remote fuellers for them in conjunction with the Crusader and SAT kit. If it works ok in the latter, I might try to make a stew in it. Now all I need for that is some oxtails!

ok given the recent and forcast weather, theres going to be a change of pitch on this meet. driving to our normal parking will be nigh on impossible, the grounds sodden. and rather than cart winter kit all the way through the wood we will now camp at upper north wood, see map link post 1. drop off kit and return your vehicle to CP1.
in addition, those who want to pitch on the newly cleared area by the moats, fine. those who would rather pitch on grass may use the SSSi site, strictly no surface disturbance though.

Thanks for the heads up Steve. :)
I was wondering about getting down to the bottom cp. We have snow here in stoke, not sticking yet. Might not get out of my drive yet though. Hopefully see you all at some point.

I have a defender and tow rope incase of problems, can be the last one out if you want to make sure we don't have any unforeseen stick-in-the-muds :) Will, when you see the country golf ball we 3 are cramming into the 3 front seats, you'll prob be hoping that all the others will be saving their travelling wishes for us ;) If your bags/ tent is newish, I'd bring em in dustbin liners as I've not valeted this un yet...

Steve, many thanks for another great Meet.
Thanks also for supplying a communal cover and the chainsaw to quickly chop the wood required. Although forecast for deep snow, none was forthcoming. Maybe next time.
Nice to see some new faces as well, hope we didn't scare you off.
To those who couldn't make it, you were all missed.
To the regulars, as always; a pleasure to see you all again.
To the regulars and newbies, wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Yet another great meet thanks Steve and to everyone that made it. Merry Xmas to all
Thanks Steve for another great meet, good to see everyone, can't wait for the next one,
