View Full Version : Sussex Group Meet for November

After a fantastic weekend at Broadstone Warren scout camp near East Grinstead I thought I would start a new thread for next months meet. The standard text is below & will be followed by the standard attendace list in a new post; can you say what dates you can or can not do & I will aim to get it booked up by the end of October.

Location of the Campsite & details of the Venue
Broadstone Warren is a Scout site situated in the Ashdown Forest in the North of Sussex, midway between the South Coast and London. The site which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) comprises 386 acres of the Ashdown Forest with campsites situated throughout the woodland in many of the glades.

How to get there
http://www.broadstonewarren.org.uk/find_us/

By Road
From the M25 - Leave the M25 at junction 8 following the M23 southbound towards Brighton. Leave the M23 at junction 10, and take the first exit on the roundabout along the A264 towards East Grinstead. When you get into East Grinstead, follow the A22 southbound towards Eastbourne. Remain on the A22, straight through Forest Row. Broadstone Warren is on the left-hand side approximately 2 miles south of Forest Row.

From the South - Follow the A22 northbound crossing the crossroads at Wych Cross (just after the Roebuck Hotel). The main entrance is approximately 500 metres after the junction on the right-hand side.

SAT-NAV - If using Sat-Nav, the postcode for the site is RH18 5JS. As you get close to the site, you need to look out for the signs as the same postcode is used for a number of local properties.

By Rail: The nearest train station is at East Grinstead, which is approximately a fifty minute train journey from London Victoria. When arriving at East Grinstead Broadstone Warren is a bus journey or ten minute taxi ride away.

By Bus: Bus services pass Broadstone Warren from East Grinstead, Uckfield and Haywards Heath.

Times & Booking In
You can stay the Friday night if you want, although the main meet starts on Saturday Morning & normally goes to late afternoon on the Sunday. When you arrive on site, please park in the Rangers' car park and check in at the ranger's office, then go directly to our pitch.

Fees
We have managed to get the discounted day rate of £4.74 (which is £3.95 + VAT). Please note that this is charged on a 24 hour baises , so if you arrive on the Saturday & leave on the Sunday after being there for more than 24 hours then you need to pay for 2 days. Sorry but that is their rules.

Pitch D1E (Near the main Buildings apparently)
The pitch we had at the Octonber meet was OK but a bit near the road. We will work out which pitch we want (please contribute if you have a preferance). This will be updated nearer the event.

What we do at the meets
This is an opportunity to meet some local(ish) Bushcrafters, camp out with like minded people & practice/learn some skills. We have had a handful of these meets before, some at other venues, but they mostly follow the same pattern. We tend to do as much or as little as you want but try to have a few sessions where anyone can take part if they want; these are usally things like different ways to make fires, carving, tree id etc.. We cook on the shared fire, often having a communal meal & have tea on the go all the time. We have a few beers round the campfire in the evening but tend not to stay up too much past midninght as others are ofetn asleep by then & we tend to get up early when you wake up in the woods, usually round 7 (although some sleep on for a bit).

The other important stuff
WATER: Standpipes are located at various points around the site.
FIREWOOD: There is ample wood for burning lying around the forest. Under NO circumstances is live wood to be cut or damaged. Chain saws are NOT permitted on the site. (NOTE: I have not yet verified the availability of wood, so if you have access to any, it may be worth bringing some wood or charcoal with you)
PITS: Due to the nature of the ground on site NO pits of any type may be dug.
VEHICLES: NO vehicles are to be driven onto the campsites or parked on the rides other than with the Duty Manager’s permission. On arrival you may be allowed to unload your equipment at your site after which you must park your vehicle in the car park allocated. At the end of your stay, after receiving the Duty Manager’s permission, you will be allowed to take your vehicle to your site to load up your equipment.
CYCLES: To comply with the Forestry Commissions Laws and Natural England, cycles are NOT permitted on the site.
DOGS: NO pets of any description are allowed on site.
NOISE / NUISANCE: As the consideration for other users is paramount, music players, radios and the like must not be audible off your own site. Noise must be kept to a bare minimum between 11pm and 7.30am. Unacceptable behaviour by any users on site will not be tolerated. Unacceptable behaviour includes: Bad language; Trespassing; Vandalism; Consumption of alcohol by minors/excessive consumption by adults; Illegal substance use; Setting fires (with the intent to cause damage); Acting in a way that may cause danger to self or others; Verbal, Emotional, Physical or Sexual Abuse
SECURITY: In the interest of security we would recommend that you do not leave any valuables in tents or buildings.
RUBBISH: Recycling facilities for glass, cans and tins are located at Camp Centre. Please clean all glassware, cans and tins before disposal. All combustible rubbish, where practicable should be burned. All other rubbish should be brought to camp centre and placed in the bins provided, or taken home for disposal.
FIRE: Fire is to stay within the main fireplace, unless people are being taught how to make fire under appopriate adult supervision. This is mainly aimed at kids, as we need to be careful where embers land away from the main fire for obvious reasons. This excludes personal hobos, gas cookers which are the owners responsability when operating.

* Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions (and any non member accompanying them)at the Meet.
* Under 18's must be accompanied by at least one parent (or appointed guardian).
* In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site; outstanding fees will still be owed. This also applies if the site staff have problems with an indevidual. Nothing like this has ever happened but we need to have the standard disclaimer, like those found at other meets.

Hope to see you round the campfire soon

I thought I would get the November meet thread up ASAP as it gives people a bit longer to plan things out. Loved this weekends meet so we need to think how we can improve it. Several of us talked about having a communal stew at the next one, where people bring some meat (beef, venison, chicken, pigeon, pheasant etc.. ) or we could all chip in a bit to have a large roast (venison, lamb, a few chickens etc..). Let us know what you think on that. Will definatly do another loaf or two, as i am very pleased how the last one turned out. I have an idea on a portable 'saw horse' so may knock something up before the next meet.

If there is anything else you want to try or do as a group then please post what it is, so we have some time to sort it out if enough people are interested. Perhaps we could make a list of things we want to try & then do that for an hour or so on each one, such as flint & steel fire lighting or game preperation. What do you want to learn at the next meet?

may be we could build shelters or find water in differets ways ;)

A saw horse would be good, as for the food I like the idea of a roast rather than a stew.
Also some belly dancers would be nice, or would that be asking too much.

Thanks again Neumo and everyone else who helped carry stuff for knackered old me! Great weekend!

I would be happy to teach people how to make mini gate hurdles from ash but I don't have all the tools at the moment. If someone could bring a brace and bits and some splitting wedges and mallet, I'll see if Mr Kepis can find some 2 inch ash poles (2ft and 4 ft long should do).

Can anyone advise as to how I should deal with the photos I took this weekend as I have quite a few?

I have a Froe, Mallet, Hand brace & bits etc.. that should take care of most of your requirements. I also would like to make a 'cleaving break' for splitting wood properly with the froe, if anyone would be interested in helping me make one & then learning how to use it.

I am toying with going up to Broadstone on the weekend of October 22nd/23rd to try out my new underblanket & practice some skills. I thought I would mention it in case anyone else was interested.

This would be seperate from the November meet, date to be decided, and would be a one off thing. Let us know if anyone is interested & I will put up a spereate thread if we get a few people who want to go. There were a few on the October thread who could only do that weekend, so I thought I would see if anyone wanted to get another weekend in before it gets too cold.

Yes, you can always come for the day or turn up on Saturday night, then stay for the Sunday. They charge for each 24 hours you are on the site, so you can do a night & the some of the next day if you want.

That is basically what we normally do, with the organiser choosing the most popular one. A poll sounds good but then you only get one choice, whereas the way I did the last one was to take into account all the people who could do say 3 weekends.

We are only halfway through October so I was going to leave it another week or so before before deciding. There is always next weekends 'mini meet', as mentioned above, if you can't wait until next month. I will book the campsite, get a pitch number & put a small thread up tomorrow on that.

I was reading about venison cooking on the other thread:
http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80285

Someone suggested Venison in a Dutch oven with a bottle of cheap white wine, assorted herbs etc.. which sounds like a goer. We can't do a Hangi as the site has a rule about not digging pits or holes.

Mini-meet is Booked in for this weekend at Broadstone, on pitch D13 which is just the other side of the track from the last meet & a bit further towards the rangers car park. Looks like me & graywolf at the moment, with maybe Kepis on the Sunday for a bit if he can make it.

Will be nice to see you again. Looks like me & Graywolf at the moment for the Saturday afternoon/night + you on Sunday if you can make it. Might get a few more, as you never know...;) The forecast for the weekend looks good & I get to try out my new UK Hammocks Underblanket & quilt, so cant wait. Will be baking some bread, probably trying a chicken roast dinner in a dutch oven plus whatever else takes our fancy.

The loaf you made at the last meet looks outstounding.

Yes it turned out well for a first attempt. I will be having another go at a loaf this weekend. It is not to hard to do if you know how to make bread; I can show you how to do it in a dutch oven if youare interested. The tricky part was getting the yeast to start fermenting, which I have a few ideas on, so will try another method for that next time.

I also want to have a go at doing a roast chicken in the Dutch Oven on the Saturady night, so will be bringing along a small chicken to expereament with. Should be good, with roast potatoes & maybe some gravey if I get inspired.

Will probably choose a date for this next week, now that we have people's interest and what dates they can do. As usual it will be a case with choosing the most popular date, i.e. the one that most people can do, which includes those of us who can do multiple dates. Not sure what to do about bonfire night, as the 5th/6th sounds a popular date, so.

I did the usual of going through the posts & put 1 next to peoples names when they can attend & a 0 when the say the can not make it for each of the dates. If people dont say when they can do it they get a ? next to there name for each weekend.

This means that JackBR, Spandit & WildBill did not give a specific date when they could make it (& by implication saying dates they could not make it) or say when they could not make it (by implication also saying when they could make it).

The result is this:

7781

So. What to do?

We could leave it to those who have not said what dates they can do to pick dates & choose that way by adding their votes to the calculation; but that is not really fair on those of us who said what dates we can do.
OR
I can start a list where we all put down a single date & choose the most poplular, assuming we dont get a tie break (in which case I get a coin out...)
OR
I can just choose one, which is what has happened before. Bonfire night would probably be factored in to this one, as a lot of people are doing things that night.

What do you think? I think we need a decision by the weekend.

Kepis

Oops.

Best bet in my mind is to just pick a date and if people can make it, brilliant, if they cant, well there's always next time, afraid you are never going to get a consensus on dates, the only way forward is as suggested, pick a date and stick with it.

OK, Thanks for your input. I will think this over & pick a date in the next day or two, that way people will have more time to book it in their diaries. I am planning to do 1 a month from now on, depending on the weather if we get snow etc.. That way everyone has a chance of coming to one. Maybe in the Spring we can have a Mega meet, advertised further in advanced, so that more people come come. Just an idea.

Grand idea, as a thought if you/we decide on a mega meet, do it in the school holidays as that way i think more people would be inclined to come along as they could bring their kids with them and as the pennies get tighter for a lot of people, you might find some people also using the meet as a short holiday as well - just a thought

Hello

I have a bit more time tonight to introduce myself, I’m Luke a friend of Neil1. I would like to come along to the November meet, I can bring venison for a communal meal should that be of interest. I can also bring along my tracking gear should anyone want to know more about this subject. If a lot of people have an interest in tracking I could teach a lesson of approx. 1-2 hours, just let me know. Any questions just ask, Neil1 will vouch for me.

I cannot do the 5-6th.

Regards to all

Luke

I've decided that no matter what the group does I'm going on Fri for Fri night, Sat night but will be leaving for work about 6am on Sunday (I can't keep using my hols up to meet you reprobates ;)) Anyone else coming if the official meet isn't happening. Ok, I spoke with Luke earlier and we are going to Broadstone on the weekend of 18,19,20 0f this month.
I'll try to get there on the Friday and put the parachute up so we have a good undercover area. I'll bring plenty of dutch ovens, dixies and a few storm lamps - so we should have a good basecamp area.
We will run a tracking workshop and a firelighting workshop.
IF others show up we will aim to have a communal meal on Saturday night.
We WILL need a firm commitment from those who will be attending.

I have called Broadstone & asked for a booing for this weekend. They will be checking with one of their staff called Jon, who Neil may have spoken to, to get us a better pitch & will call me back. Sorry for no updates but work has gone mental & my dad has been in hospital, so have been busy sorting all that out. Will post on here when it is booked up, which should be later today.

Communal meal of Vension sounds good & we should be able to have enough Dutch Ovens to do other stuff like rice as well. A headcount is hard to call but I would go for 10 people.

So the stew etc should be well provided for... All looking good. I spoke to Jon, who said Neil had sorted us out pitch D1 E, so I will update the opening post. I will be down on Saturday morning but am getting over a big bout of flue, so won't be running around a lot.

Food sounds like it is sorted & I will bring the bread making bits along again, including my Dutch Oven. Looking forward to the venison & will bring some other bits as well: potatoes, rice etc.. See you all on Saturday

That is fine, as you just pay for each 24 hours you are on site so come when you want. Looks like we will have quite a few this time so I am looking forward to this one.

Another great meet at Broadstone completed, so I am very happy about that. A big thanks to Neil for bringing the parachute & for providing us with one of the best stews I have had in a long time. Likewise to Luke for his fascenating fireside show & tell on deer and other woodland animals, plus Iona for her Mushroom walk that should us just how many types of mushroom are to be found in southern woodland if you know where to look. It was great to see some now familiar faces as well as meeting some interesting new local bush crafters. Thanks to all those who attended for making this one of the most interesting meets yet. Sitting under the parachute next to the fire with the first cup of tea of the day was wonderful, just chatting away & learning new stuff all the time.

I will put up the ad for next months meet in a minute & put in a link from this thread.

It was a real pleasure to meet your good lady & yourself, and hope to see you at many more events to come. It must be a right result having a meet like this pop up down the road. We have the next meet booked in at Broadstone for the weekend of the 17th/18th of December, so hope to see you then if you are free.

Blooming eck, I lost my Green trapper hat on this meet up, if anyone has found it or will find it I'll be thankful for it's return.
It has fury stuff on the two flaps that pull down over the ears.

That's kind of you Simon, get a few mushrooms while you are at it for me.
By the way I turned everything out this end just in case it was hiding in a rucksack or at the bottom of a bivi bag or something.
It was a pleasure to meet up with you all at the meet, hope I can make the next one as well.
