View Full Version : Rough Close ~ November'11 ~ TORM Meet
Meet date: 11 ~ 13 November 2011 ~ Arrival time is from 16:00 on the 11th.
This Meet has been sceduled to coincide with The Original Reenactors Market (http://www.reenactorsmarket.co.uk/)(TORM). If you want to go, go and if you don't, then don't .
As per usual, the location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.btck.co.uk/).
Site fees are £4.40 (http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows. net/site1875/List/RC Price List 2011.pdf) per person per night ~ please see 'Helpful info' .
Please pay on arrival. If you haven't been before, someone will be able to point you in my direction.
Edits will be highlighted in red and italicised.
We are booked onto The Leader Training Field.
In the pic below, the virtual tent placement pin marks the position of the Leader Training Field. The Red line marks the approximate route of the main track which leads to the main access point to the pitch.
I have put a couple of extra details onto the map ~ toilets, water etc and I'm leaving both RED and BLUE routes (for PC11) on for reference ;) .

I'll have a play and try to see what I can do about the size of the pic ~ flickr has gone a bit Doris Stokes on me at the moment :o . And played ~ hopefully that's better ...
From the site's Directions (http://www.roughclose.btck.co.uk/Directions) page:
City of Coventry Scout County
Rough Close Scout Campsite

OS: Grid Ref: SP264779 (Site Access) SP266786 (Site Centre)
This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome ~ please see 'Helpful info'.
Helpful info:
The list isn't exhaustive - common sense applies. If in doubt, ask!
This list makes our Meets seem to be overly regulated. Don't worry, it isn't ~ it's just to try to preempt the very rare 'If you're not allowed to ..., why didn't it say so in the Meet thread?' excuse/reaction/comment.
Any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which is above the camping fees will be automatically considered to be a donation to Rough Close campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.
Forum members are responsible for themselves*, the kit they use and their own actions (and any non member accompanying them) at the Meet. * This includes meals and cooking. It is up to each registered member to make sure that they have enough suitable food for their stay and and also for planning/arranging for any replenishment if/as need be.
Under 18's must be accompanied by at least one parent (or legal guardian).
You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee ~ The sites bin is the big orange thing in the Camper’s Car Park.
When visiting others, do not leave your rubbish in their pitch (or in a communal area) ~ take it with you and dispose of it yourself. The sites bin is the big orange thing in the Camper’s Car Park.
There is no communal bin in the Communal Area.
Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited! Please don't walk through another groups pitch whilst drinking alcohol and/or smoking.
Please keep ‘colourful language’ reasonable and to a reasonable volume.
After unloading, vehicles need to be parked up in the campers car park.
Wood fires must be raised and contained. Periodically there is a shortage of wood available to burn - if you want to cook on an open fire, bring a supply of wood or charcoal.
Due to changes in site policy, we cannot cut down standing dead wood. The same goes for green wood ~ damaged or not.
It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.
In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site; outstanding fees will still be owed.
Time (http://countdown.free-and-online.com/?timer=tloxmv6024) remaining until the Meet.
The Old Hands would do well to keep an eye on our Social Group area for this one ;) .
Noise levels after 11 p.m need to be respectful of other campers desire to sleep at socially accepted hours.
Noise levels before 07:30 a.m need to be respectful of other campers desire to have a bit of a lie in.
Chopping (or crackin/snapping etc) wood at 'silly o'clock' is not acceptable. Please make sure that you prepare wood for the start of the next day well before dusk ~ and if you can't be sure, bring an alternative method of heating water/cooking.
There will be one or more scheduled workshops available at this Meet. Information of what/where/when etc and spaces/places on them will be made available at a meeting to be held at 09.30 on Saturday Morning ~ aka Morning Prayers ~ attendance of this meeting is in no way mandatory.
The Morning Prayers meeting is not a religious _thing_.
The 'Touchy Subject' bit:
Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.
It's fine if you want to:
be on your own
lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over etc
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that :lmao:
practice flora and fauna ID
so on and so forth ...
This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.
Copy and paste yada yada ...

Whats the usual craic with attending? D'ya buy tickets en block in advance or go down in informal groups/ individually? I should have 5 or 6 empty seats after setting up... depending on how much bootspace y'all need for purchases o'course ;)
Whats the usual craic with attending?
Most seem to go along on the Friday  .
D'ya buy tickets en block in advance or go down in informal groups/ individually?
It's down to attendees as to whether they go individually or pool together in groups ~ I'm local, so it's easy for me to roll up there, take stuff (inc swmbo) home and then roll on over to RC.
I should have 5 or 6 empty seats after setting up... depending on how much bootspace y'all need for purchases o'course ;)
Would it not be a tad late after setting up? Might it be worth toddling over on the Saturday instead? :dunno:

I will be head to the TORM on Saturday.
Mostly Informal, I tend to get up get myself sorted and others can join or follow me :)
That is if Cliv will wake up this time :)
I'm coming down for the market :)
Not going to camp, meeting up with loads of friends, but very happy to have a coffee break and a blether if folks are going to be in the market.
Decorum, when are you and the Missus likely to be there ? and would you ask her if she'd still like a linen partlet and cap set? I'm clearing out kit and she is very welcome to them :)
Coffee ? when would suit best ?
atb,

At the moment we're most likely to be there on the Friday. The Boss is out at the moment so I'll need to check with her ~ but I'm fairly sure she's busy on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.
I'll ask her, but I suspect we already know the answer :lmao:~ I'll drop you a PM when I've asked (or remembered to ask) the Q ;) .

As with many/most of our previous Meets, this Meet is open to Sales/Trades/Swaps.
As ever, forum rules for these Sales/Swaps/Trades apply. The forum rules governing/guiding Sales/Swaps/Trades are extended to cover scouting and the site ~ and, other than where I am a vested party, also extended to myself.
It is easier all round if we set a time and place to do swaps/trades/sales ~ we'll let you know when and where at Saturday Morning Prayers*
If you're planning on bringing stuff along to Sell/Swap/Trade, please add your name and a few details of what you'll (probably) have up for grabs.
Sales/Swaps/Trades:

when you say that Bud does that mean there is not going to be a communal fire?
or is that not yours?
i only ask as i will make my own arrangements ie fire pit if thats the case.

Steve just fancies doing a lighter weight affair this time ~ so he's foregoing the luxuries given by lugging the raised pit, supports, irons, DO's, bake stone, communal kettle, bungees, ropes, parachute etc along.
The communal area has a concrete block to have ground fires on ;) .

As Phil said, I just fancy not having the hassle of lugging all the heavy kit along to this meet.
I'll still have a small jerrycan firepit and tarp over by my pitch :)
So there will still be a communal fire, but maybe not a communal cover to it?
So there will still be a communal fire,
Correct ~ If people want a communal fire in the communal area then we'll have one  .
I've been having fun trying to dry some woollens and some salt petre'd polypore and I don't blame Steve for avoiding the need to dry his chute :lmao:
but maybe not a communal cover to it?
:D Good use of maybe :D ~ again you're correct, the communal area may be without cover :dunno: .

I would like to have a go at flint knapping and was wondering if anyone coming to RC this time is already even a tiny bit proficient. If so could you either help me build up a basic tool kit or just give me a few tips?
Based on UK knapping:
http://uk-knapping.forumotion.co.uk/t5-shoestring-guide-to-buying-tools
The basic kit seems to be something like:
http://i67.servimg.com/u/f67/12/07/32/91/knappi11.jpg
and in more detail (with stuff in italics that I already have/can get, but I have given the complete list in case it is of help to others)
Pressure Flaking
Pressure Flaker (ready made)
Antler
Antler in wood
Copper Nails 4” (to make my own)
Leather Pad
Rubber Channelled Pad
Folded Linen
Fine Abrader/suitable rock
File
Percussion Flaking
1 1/8" Copper Bopper OR 1 1/8” copper unsoldered end caps to make thebopper
Other size end caps also seemto be useful
Lead wheel weights – or similar- (to melt to put in the copper caps)
1" Copper billet/suitable Pebble
Rough Abrader/suitable rock
Leather Leg Pad
Linen
Hard Hammer, Soft Hammer, Abrader
Spalling
Club Hammer /big rock
Safety Equipment
safety glasses
leathergloves.
It may be that if I could see the stuff in the flesh that I would realise that I actually have more stuff than I think.
Copied over from the other thread:
There's been a fair bit of nattering behind the scenes and a couple of us have been trying to organise a meet up schedule for those at the TORM event so that those who are travelling to the market can meet up and put faces to names and have a natter.
What we have come up with is ...
Day
Time
Meet up location
Friday
14:00
Pavillion Bar (in, at or near)
Saturday
12:00
Pavillion Bar (in, at or near)
Sunday
12:00
Pavillion Bar (in, at or near)
The Pavillion is in the smaller and lower of the two buildings and the bar can be found inside on the right hand side of the hall.
We're not going down the route of red carnation in the button hole and a folded copy of The Times in the cruck of the left arm ~ but those coming from the Meet will probably have topped up their smokey ruggedness ;)
Sounds good :D
Pick up a fallen leaf, put it on your shirt somewhere, or in your hat or ...... tear one out of a napkin or sommat.

Based on UK knapping:
http://uk-knapping.forumotion.co.uk/t5-shoestring-guide-to-buying-tools
The basic kit seems to be something like:
http://i67.servimg.com/u/f67/12/07/32/91/knappi11.jpg
and in more detail (with stuff in italics that I already have/can get, but I have given the complete list in case it is of help to others)
Pressure Flaking
Pressure Flaker (ready made)
Antler
Antler in wood
Copper Nails 4” (to make my own)
Leather Pad
Rubber Channelled Pad
Folded Linen
Fine Abrader/suitable rock
File
Percussion Flaking
1 1/8" Copper Bopper OR 1 1/8” copper unsoldered end caps to make thebopper
Other size end caps also seemto be useful
Lead wheel weights – or similar- (to melt to put in the copper caps)
1" Copper billet/suitable Pebble
Rough Abrader/suitable rock
Leather Leg Pad
Linen
Hard Hammer, Soft Hammer, Abrader
Spalling
Club Hammer /big rock
Safety Equipment
safety glasses
leathergloves.
It may be that if I could see the stuff in the flesh that I would realise that I actually have more stuff than I think.
Dont forget the FLINT!
Ahh - well spotted!
I do have one piece of flint that someone at RC gave me (apologies to whoever it was but can't remember who) but in the first instance I was intending to practice on the bottom of a beer bottle.
Only problem is you have to buy a bottle of beer and then drink it - but , hey ho, you sometimes have to make sacrifices ......:)

Guys, I have a large section of an old canvas marquee/ might be a bedford tilt which some mates gave me for tipi material... not opened it out so not sure of size or condition and I haven't any rope but should I stick it in the boot just incase you clever folk can mackle a communal cover out of it? We're not likely to get there before dark tho :S

How soft is the ground at Rough Close at this time of year? I ask as I'm thinking of ground dwelling.
How soft is the ground at Rough Close at this time of year? I ask as I'm thinking of ground dwelling.
With or without a kip mat?
After recent climatic conditions*, the ground is likely to be mildly moist. The soil is heavily organic with leaf and/or conifer needle above. Bushlore applies and at least one gnarly root will appear under you in the night :dunno: .
* In an attempt to avoid invoking 'The Curse of Twang Twang' I have purposely refrained from utilising the 'R' word  .

Thanks, yes I'll have a kip mat, just that I remember reading somewhere on here that RC had a reputation for not draining too well when soggy* conditions were to the fore

Ha ha, Rain Close! This is an attempt to take the pressure off Andy 2112 so Phil doesn't get more mileage than a Goodyear tyre out of the gag! I'll put my head on the block...
It'll be grand I reckon, ground dwelling worked well for me in this area last time in September and I plan on repeating the ground dwelling this time round with my posh new sleeping set up. Can't wait!
... I remember reading somewhere on here that RC had a reputation for not draining too well when soggy* ...
That's pretty accurate :lmao: . It's been an odd year on site as it's been so 'lack of 'R'' that the ponds on and next to the site have almost been dust bowls :yikes: ~ and _in theory_ this should mean that the recent soggyness should spread out and dissipate quite nicely.
:lmao: But ... I'll have an IPK down to put stuff on :lmao:

( :o Now that life has slowed a little and I've finally caught up with myself :o )
Thanks to all who turned out and made for another great weekend  ~ it was good to catch up with the usual suspects, those who are swiftly becoming almost like the furniture and also to meet new faces :) .
A good wedge of attendees disappearing to enjoy TORM and now know why I arrange the November Meet to coincide with the event ;) :lmao:. It was good to catch up with Mary and Russ. Mary, you're a star :thankyou: and I hope you both enjoyed your trip out to visit us.
... I am organising a 'Whiskey evening' for that weekend ...
?? A 48 hour whiskey evening ?? :yikes: :notworthy . Oh, and have you worked out what we had done to your chair yet?
... and you all putting up with a noobs frequent mistakes, kindly correcting or pointing out with humour....
Have you not noticed the mickey taking when when one of us supposedly experienced bods has an embarrassing fail ;) . It's also common for us to ask each other the really bone questions so that we can take best advantage of what someone else is trying to do  .

[QUOTE=decorum;993070]( :o ?? A 48 hour whiskey evening ?? :yikes: :notworthy . Oh, and have you worked out what we had done to your chair yet?
Well ... the whiskey evening is on Saturday so I will be preparing Friday and Saturday and will still be emotional on Sunday.
Re the chair, I thought that either:
you had done absolutely nothing and were just trying to wind me up to think that you had done something and wanted me to spend a lot of time looking for something that wasn't there, or
I did consider that you had moved it along a bit and not actually done anything to the chair
Failing either of those then , no haven't worked it out - do tell.:)

?so that means the options are:
nothing was done to the chair or
something was done to the chair but by someone else or
something was done by you to the general space around where I was sitting or

I am thinking of reporting you all to the Equal Opportunities Commission (is it fair to still call it that?) for taking advantage of a decrepit old man with a weak bladder who is drinking beer:)

Ah, but not taking advantage* on the basis of having greater age would be age-ist and therefore illegal :p
* But, as I did nothing I didn't and it wasn't :confused: (:p).

Ok well (because I am an idle b*st*rd) the chair is still in the car so I will be sorting my stuff out tomorrow and will have a look at it - if I can't see anything I will give in and ask

Well I have a cunning plan - I will get myself into suspended animation and leave instructions for me to be re-activated when a time machine has been invented. I will then return to watch what you did while I was having a p**, and then tell myself what it was.
(NB now wait to see my next post on this thread for the answer)

Perhaps the chair has been transformed with woodland skill into a tardis.... I expect to be awoken with the sound of splitting branches and a smug looking Chris :) Thank you btw, neighbour, for your valuable moral and practical support on fridays set-up =)
Thanks Sally - just pleased to help
UPDATE RE CHAIR - I have received an e-mail from myself saying that I will meet up with me tomorrow (My other me knows that I am busy today). So no further news till then. (From either of us)
Further update - have now unpacked and cannot see anything unusual about the chair - however I am fully expecting to hear from my future self tomorrow - see new avatar (thanks Turbogirl for the idea)

Me and Adam had a great time as usual. Thanks Phi,l for the facilitation.
Thanks to my Axe mask mentors, Chad and Lee, for the top tips and thanks for the materials Chad. The mask is now glued and ready for the next step.
Thanks Sally for a spot of DO stew. Was great to meet everyone again.
The two tales which we tried to relate to others on Saturday evening were ...
'Agent Picolax (http://www.madcaow.com/blog/random/agent-picolax/)'
and
'The Pooch Palace (http://www.salon.com/2005/10/19/posts_of_the_decade/singleton/)'
It might take a while to read through both and ...
... be sure to go to the toilet prior to reading the first ;) .

Well ... I met my future self earlier today (or was it later - I get so confused sometimes) - and I have to say that I thought I looked in pretty good condition for a 55,210 year old man - I would have thought they had invented a cure for baldness/thinning hair by then but apparently not.
So I now have it on excellent authority that it was definitely option 1 - nothing was done to the chair.
By the way, the main reason for the 'no baldness cure' is that by 57,221 humans have no body hair anyway, and everyone is comfortable with that. However it does mean that you have to buy a special piece of hairy material when you want to test the sharpness of your (old style) metal knife as you have no hairs on your forearms (what is left of them anyway - apparently fingers got longer and forearms got shorter when humans had to push buttons for everything and even when telepathic powers were developed the long fingers and short foreams remained and have not yet/then become atrophied by lack of use.)

But what about the things that were ON the chair?
But what about the things that were ON the chair?
Ah well - I didn't ask my future self about that. And if you did put something on the chair then I may well have not seen it - not surprising as I am not the most observant person in the world and obviously still won't be in 50-odd thousand year's time.
I concentrated on stuff like winning lottery numbers (shallow I know but there it is). So I guess I will have to confess that the real reason I won't be at the January RC meet is because I will by then have won the eurolottery rollover jackpot and will be receiving my cheque on that Saturday evening from Tony Blair. EDIT - because that is how I pay for the time travel
One thing I forgot to mention is that the hairy material is special because it re-grows when you have trimmed it.
So I now have it on excellent authority that it was definitely option 1 - nothing was done to the chair.
 Seems a lot of effort to go to for nothing ...
... especially as we kept insisting that that's exactly what we'd done :p .
