View Full Version : Loch Achray Winter Meet

I've just fired off an email to David Marshall Lodge about the possibility of another combined BCUK & SOTP winter meet, anybody fancy it?

No idea of a date yet as I've asked them to let me know of any free weekends first, I'm hoping the site will be fairly quiet over winter and we can pick a date to suit the majority.

This (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43277&highlight=loch+achray) thread from September '09 gives a good idea of what went on

Provisionally yes for me unless it clashes with the Rough Close meet in January.

:Good idea :approveL

We've been sort of arranging a Comriecroft 'bushcraft carboot sale', and skills sharing long weekend too.
If the hall's free then we've been told that we can have it very reasonably, and if not, then there'll be the barn that could be used for dry cover.

I think you'd get a lot of interest for Loch Achray though Shewie :)
I'm not coming, or at least I'm not for camping there though, it's midge central hell for me :sigh:

cheers,
Mary

Even in winter Toddy? It'll be midge free I hope

I got bitten by a cleg at the end of last October :sigh: and only the snow stopped the thrice damned midgies :(
I'm sometimes tempted to try a little bloodletting into a balloon, with one of those wee handwarmers in it, and stand back and see just how many critturs try to munch on me :(

If mozzies ever get a good grip here, I'm shifting to the East coast where it's dry and windy, or maybe sussing out a no-see-um burka

I know that folks love Loch Achray and the surrounds, but I've had only one day there when I wasn't munched upon; even as a child that area was a misery for me.

Have a brilliant weekend, and take photos :D

cheers,
M

After October, the Forrest Drive shuts. So do less fisherman go there 'unofficially' camping ? As they would not have access except by foot.

Shewie

I got an email from the guys at the weekend and apparently the site is closing for refurb work over winter, therefore no access is available after the end of October.

I'll see if we can get in the other side of Christmas

We could be a bit cheeky, arrange for parking at the hotel across the loch then paddle over to the site ?

Sounds good, my last canoe trip (my third ever voyage) was marred by a capsize :-)

Improvised sailing, rafting 2 or 3 or more, rescue drills, stroke development, paddling in the wind, open and closed blade paddling, J stroke that turns the boat away from the paddle side (opposite of normal J stroke).

Hi Shewie,
Belzeebob and I may be up for it if the dates are good, I'm just getting back on my feet health wise and itching to try out my new Tipi. Still OK to bring the well behaved rug fancier mutt Snoop to Achray?

Of course mate, it would be good to see you again. Can you bring a van full of wood again? :)

Pressure's on now to get it sorted, I'm on the case tomorrow

Goatboy

I'm sure wood can be provided, though I can't carry 'owt at the moment, so labour would need to be provided. It would be good to catch up.

Anything arranged date wise yet? Cameron was asking how long till the moot. When I told him it's ages yet he asked if there are any other meets happening. Poor lad has got cabin fever real bad and needs to get out.

I'm running out of weekends in April and May (Indoor Ice climbing and canoe camping with school grps).

A date whenever you can arrange it would be good.

1 Weekend of May left. Three filled with canoe/sea kayak camping trips.

Does anyone know how bad it gets with fisherman camping there without permission from the FC ?
