I'm in for this one, couldn't make the last one due to commitments.

can someone let me know where we meet up and if we bring just our own food or bring loads to share and alcohol etc

Also, if anyone needs a lift from around the Torquay area, i'm happy to help.

Also, what's the rules regarding people under 18, can my 13 year old son come as well... doesn't matter if the language can get a bit colourful, i know he's heard it all in the playground.

Cheers

Phill

If I can, I will, sorry I missed the last one. I will know by Tuesday night. Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces, and meeting some new ones.

To Wild Thing , (Phill) glad you can make this one , to answer some questions for you and maybe a few others .

Cost £10.00 for the weekend includes , safe and secure parking, firewood, various, dutch ovens , cooking pots , heavy items etc. etc .

No charge for under 18s, but without being rude you are responsible for your lad.

There is a 1.2 km walk to the site so come as light as you can , although we all muck in and help .

Alcohol no problem , but sometimes the late night fireside banter can be a little adult at times ! ( common sense prevail )

We will organise at least 2 group meals , especially as we now have The Big Lebowski, as our own personal camp chef ! (not sure he knows yet !) but everybody also brings their own food , and we sort of chip in for any emergency supply runs as needed.

A bit closer to the time i will post and pm you directions tel nos etc .

Any other questions please ask

Hi Jon , will be great to see you again, i dont think we have to worry about Cory , he is more responsible than you !
i take it you wont be bringing the Billy Smarts big top , and have sensibly aquired something a little lighter, or to we need to reserve a landing strip for you ?

Hi Ivan

That's brilliant mate, thanks

To be honest, when he's out in the woods, Kieran switches into responsible mode as i've always stressed to him the dangers of pratting around when there are fires and sharps around.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hi Ivan
... the dangers of pratting around when there are fires and sharps around.

I can do that. I nearly did it last time, but that was due to some nasty cockney forcing absinthe down my neck :p.

I don't really need to say it, but I'll be there...heck...I'm part of the scenery (even if it is the slightly annoying part).
I will also see what goodies I can knock up, for handouts.

Cory is yet to decide, think he is of the age he is getting bored of his old man, i did offer him to bring a friend... we will see

no big tent, if its just me (and cory) then tarp and bivvy wil be the order fo the day, if his mate comes, ill bring the little tent and i'll taro and they can have that.

and it aint that big, 4m diameter for a family tent is quite tiny :)

My wife is spending that weekend with her brothers so I've got to take care of our two kids. I'm bummed; I was really hoping I could make this one. :( :( :(

Ivan...
11-09-2011, 07:48
Hi Bernie , thats a shame , another time i am sure , hope you and your lot are well,
best wishes Ivan...

Dave53, I wiil cut the grass at the top site , as we may use that , or even both depending on weather and how wet the ground is , good job its not this weekend , as the remnants of hurricane Katia is making it a bit blowey and wet , i went up there yesterday and had to put pebbles in my pocket so as not to blow away !
I may even experiment with a different part of the wood , we will see , if any one has any free time and wants to come and help beforehand , clearing ,sorting out firewood, erecting tarps etc it would be appreciated . Not that important as Adam usually comes down a few days before a meet to help (star), just if anybody was at a loose end and fancied a few nights in the woods .

hiya, confused as to the group meal/breakfast arrangements..... are we doing a an evening group meal like the pit oven of yesteryear or are people looking at doing all meals together? i really struggle with sorting bits for such things, happy to bung some cash into an evening meal so i am not a complete antisocial git and will of course have the obligatory bottle of Jose (plus beer), but other than that, does anyone mind if i dont join in with group cookups? i worked a 24 hour shift pattern for nearly 20 years and lost all sense of mealtimes so have become one of those that eats when im hungry...... it would do my head in to either wait for mealtime or be presented with a big plate when i am in a non-appitite part of my day and there are no patterns to that. i can go all day not eating and then cram at 10pm, or eat at lunch and not til bed or indeed eat pretty non stop. today i had sunday lunch at 1pm, didnt eat much of it (my mother in law is used to me).... ate more at 3 and then six and currently stuffing my face again, but yesterday i ate a sandwhich at 2pm and nothing else... i have no idea about tomorrow.... the only thing i do know re my eating, is tuesday is dominoes day (two for tuesday) lol.

sorry, as ivan and adam will vouch.... im an odd one but not a bad one :P

Hammock £40-50, Under-quilt (you'll need one) £60

Some people are quite happy with a thermal mat to keep their back warm, so you will need a double layer (to put the mat inside).

Jona, I think the plan is to do a pot of soup in the daytime (saturday) and smoke/roast some pork for the evening.... A brekkie will be thown together (Mandy kindly provided last time) on the sunday morning.

Feel free to have some when its done, keep some for later if you are not hungry at the time or just cook for yourself as and when. The group cooking is just to keep me away from sharpening, or setting fire to things!

I struggle to sit down at times, so like to keep focused (which cooking seems to keep me amused)

depends, my tarp was £60 on its own. the lite weight nylon tarps are not to usuable near camp fires, but a polycotton will set you back more.

i assume you can get polycotton hammocks too?

savagebushcraft
11-09-2011, 23:42
Jon: I'm just gunna see what happens, I don't eat much usually anyway, so if it's about fair enough, if not, I'll knock up some porridge. Can always pop to the shop to grab some ingredients if needed.

Lucy: You don't need to spend a fortune on hammocks and associated parts. Yeah 40-50 would get you a 2.7m DD, with double layer, underblankets are easier to sleep with, but they are bulky to carry (about the same as a sleeping bag). All you need for the basics, is something like a Tenth wonder hammock (£14.99), a roll mat (cut to shape, so it doesn't slide around), some webbing straps (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-INCH-50mm-GREEN-STRAP-WEBBING-10-METRE-POLYPROPYLENE-/120771791119?pt=UK_Crafts_Sewi ng_Supplies_MJ&hash=item1c1e8f490f#ht_1153wt_ 905), a couple of caribiners (to form a drip line) and a Tarp to throw over the lot.

A double layer of what to put the mat inside? (I am so stupid sometimes must be because I am a woman)!

Double layer hammock... So the mat wont slide about/out.

I'll show you a set up with UQ and the rigging at the meet. I wish I could sleep on the floor, a trapped nerve decided for me though.

As adam pointed out, you could be up and running for £20. I spent a bit more as we winter hammock, and I'm hoping to get below the -8 we managed last year so its kind-of an investment for me, anyways!

jonajuna
11-09-2011, 23:47
im a ground dweller, use tents when on campsites and festies and the like (or when have family with me), in the woods i prefer just a tarp, groundsheet and bivvybag. feels more au natural to be that way. obviously zero security as all your kit is on show, but camped up with trusted bods as to be found at ivans, and all is well :)

thinking of doing a slight different tarp set up this time, more of a lean to and have a fire to keep me company overnight, temps are dropping so it will be welcome.

edit, TBL a dodgy back is the reason i dont hammock, need to move about a lot in sleep and just dotn feel able in a hammock, plus dont like to have my ass lower than my head and feet. i do cheat a bit and use a doubled up thermarest :P

11-09-2011, 23:48

I had the pleasure of a Bivi on a 30 mile hike over wales March this year...
I loved the concept of being able to bed down in a matter of minutes, but my sleep was all over the place and it took me 20 mins to be able to sit up in the mornings :p

I'd do it again, but for a comfortable sleep system, the hammock wins hands down for me.

I've got a spare hammock, tarp, underquilt and all sorts of other paraphernalia. Not sure if I can make the meet yet but if I can, do you want me to bring it Lucy?

All you'd really need is a sleeping bag, want me to bring the extras?

LRforestschool
12-09-2011, 07:00
That would be great to try, but don't want you to have to drag the gear in for me. If you do come and bring it with you, I can assist with the carrying of your gear up the lane!

Thank you very much for that helpful thought - and to everyone else who is providing information and advice, including looking at set-ups at the last meet. You guys (and Mandy of course) are top notch.

ATTN. TBL, Hi Al that plant we ate on our bimble on the moor was Tormentil (potentilla erecta) family rosaceae. A native perennial . Very common on grassland, mountains, heaths and bogs throughout Britain. Height to 25cm . The plantis used to cure colic, diarrhoea and even cystitis. The roots contain tannin and if chewed occasionally may keep the mouth clear of mouth complaints and harden the gums. Flowers May to October.

Great, now Ivan's talking of a potentilla 10 inch erecta...

The Big Lebowski
12-09-2011, 16:07
Ahhhh.... Good to have a name for it Ivan.

Strangely enough, I found several today on a mooch around an old estate I often wander on. Cheers for that!

I can take an ID book next time to confirm its the same. I also found another half ton or so of fatwood, a hybrid apple tree (half crab/domestic)

A pocket full of cramp balls and a useable (but dead) artists conk!

'Twas a nice 'Bimble' :)

Despite the endless innuendo ;) , I'm still keen to come and meet you guys on one of these meets. However... my partner is due to pop out our first baby on October the 10th, which I think might be cutting things a bit close to the bone!

What's the mobile phone reception like on-site? If it's OK I might be able to consider coming along and stying on call!

The Big Lebowski
12-09-2011, 22:23
Vodaphone was 3-4 bars on mine...

all depends on how your standing but reception is available

savagebushcraft

O2 is the network with the best reception there. If you are on o2, you will get a signal, no matter which pocket it's in, or where you stand.

I'm on Orange. Will have a mull over. May take some convincing of my better half!

@savagebushcraft Came across your website via this thread, good vids, I'm enjoying working through them!

savagebushcraft
13-09-2011, 10:40
Thanks Deaner666. Just processing a couple more videos, in the alcohol stove test series.
I'm pretty sure orange is very hit and miss in this wood. Like you say, it's cutting it very close. :dunno:

Deaner666
13-09-2011, 10:56
Yup. A bit too close methinks!

savagebushcraft
13-09-2011, 11:21
And with a 40 mile (ish) trip, from Bodmin to Dartmoor, it makes it a little difficult to "pop" along, for an hour or so too.

Deaner666
13-09-2011, 11:37
I'm only 20 minutes from Plymouth, so would depend which bit of Dartmoor you were on. Closest hospital is actually Derriford anyway, but we're hoping for a home birth so that's a moot point ;)

savagebushcraft
13-09-2011, 13:22
Well, whether you make it or not, best of luck with an "easy" birth (if those things actually exist) and many sleepless nights. ;)

Crikey some issues being discussed on here while i am up the woods ! I second the uncomplicated arrival of your first, Deaner666 ( sorry pal left a 6 off your name on the other thread ) anyway orange reception is sporadic to say the least , but some other networks are very good .
I t would be good to meet you so if the oppurtunity arises come on up !

Could to with some help from the Savage, and company , letting that work thing get in the way , i dont know !!

I can make it on the Saturday and Sunday, if anyone is interested in having a play with some choppers, I can bring along a Condor Golok, A Gerber BG Parang, a Condor Kukri, ESEE Junglas, and maybe the Condor Parang and Thai Enep if my budget this month ( and Heinnies stock levels) permit for testing and fondling purposes. if your all still sober enough, I will have a basic first aid kit but I have no training, so be warned :)
Ivan, I still have that Forces 25 pack if your interested?

savagebushcraft

They are longing to see it at work, and I have the chance at a new job that it would be really useful for (together with anything bushcraft/outdoor environment learning orientated) - more on that when we all next meet - the dream job for me if it comes off.

Sure can do buddy. Never a problem or chore! :)

I'll be doing a bit of sharpening here and there so I'll take a look-see at that axe Lucy. I will be packing a file with the kit, so I would need to see how far gone it is..!

Collected plenty of hazel spindles yesterday, have several hearths drying on the side and a load of Jute/dry tinder. Its all going in a drybag when ready so its just a case of when. I can do one on one with the bowdrill, but it would be limited to just a few this time, due to cooking, sharpening, recovering ect!

Just play it by ear and see what happens on the weekend.

perhaps its a good idea of dave53s to list any supplies you are bringing , so as we dont end up with a lorry load of sausages and nothing to go with them ! so somebody more tech than me start a list , its not compulsory, so if you want to cater for yourself and just join in with the 2 planned group meals or not thats fine . Hi what a fantastic day ! hey tbl i have ringed up the beech and some other stuff for the chop off ! be warned there is an art to splitting wood ! before anybody starts throwing down the gauntlet ! I am sure you are a fine scholar in the fine art , you certainly have the build , and the warhammer looks the kiddie ! hiya all, a few things if i may?

Mandi says, "was anyone able to give me a lift please? and do you want a stew (idea of for how many too)"

i says, what do you want from me towards group meal/other things?

TBL, i only have a little one, but if you have time, as you have the skill, can you buff it for me please?

finally, i would like to point out, you dont make a labourer into a tradesman by giving him a big tool, he needs the skill to go with it

Fair enough then that will be done bags and bags of marshmallows and what type of wine are we looking fir 2 red and 2 White and anyone got a preference to what wines as I wouldn't have a clue about wine

For white wine I would suggest that a Sauvignon Blanc is a good middle of the road on taste in terms of being dry and crisp but not TOO dry or harsh. Could be a general crowd pleaser. maybe New Zealand? But tastes vary so much between people - maybe a sweeter wine would suit some and hell I will drink anything at all, so aim for the most popular choice that emerges from chats here! Either way I will eventually fall out of the hammock!

I know nothing about red - but will drink that too!

I will bring a bottle as well.

The Big Lebowski

With wines I follow a simple rule....

tequila on the other hand makes me amusing, intelligent and irresistable to the opposite sex

Unfotunately forgot about a talk I am attending with my boss on the thursday night before the meet - so VERY early Friday instead, or maybe VERY late Thursday night and test your ticker instead Ivan! Nothing like the red lights on a head torch to freak-out the man of the woods who's been reading ghost stories (ref. other thread) (if I remember to change the batteries this time).

Hello people, well as you probably know i have given up on my life in the woods for now ! I tell you what you have chance to let your mind run a bit wild , still i had a go and might even try it again some day but deffo with some company , i even got fed up with the sound of my own voice !!

Also i think if i had tried to stick it out till the meet , i would have been like Jack Nicholson from the shining !!
Never mind on to more pressing things , could you let me know when you intend arriving , and also put a (g) if you are ground dwelling or (h) if you intend to hang so as to give me an idea of possible site,if you dont know yet dont bother .
Anybody can come from the Wednesday before if it suits .
Please dont forget your pennies for the wishing pot !

Also was thinking og the walk that was planned a couple of meets ago , but due to dangerous weather had to be cancelled, or maybe a walk to the pub !! what do you think ?

Oh yeah Joel , you asked if you could bring anything ? I am sure you have an old pipe kicking around ,so i am not slobbering all over yours , that would be cool .

Also if anyone has any beer or lager left over from Christmas , that they will never drink , bring it along , dont worry i willbe more than happy to carry it up !!

If you've got a long enough straw, there's 4 gallon of cider sat up at the cabin crying out to be supped.
