View Full Version : Jungle Bags
Hi. This might sound a silly question, but I recently bought a jungle bag from Goldings Surplus in Canterbury, which I've used a couple of times for summer camping. It comes with a liner, which I used alone last weekend, but I just wondered what the liner was for. It's kind of mesh...just curious as combined they're a bit too tangly. Any info greatly appreciated! Cheers
Hello mate,
I have one of the bags but I don't have the liner, they used to issue a liner with the 58 pattern down bag to prolong the life, only having to wash the liner and not the bag itself. The old liner used to have poppers to attach it to the bag, I know the jungle bag has ties, can you attach the liner using them. As I said I don't have the liner so I'm only guessing, but I hope that helps.

in the TA we were issued liners for the 58' down bag,
i don't think anyone used them as they always seemed to end up tied up around your legs in the night!
Thanks mates for those responses. The liner I have has poppers but the bag itself has ties, but I could connect them if I wanted to. As Rappleby said, you end up with the liner around your legs anyway! But on a hot night I was able to use the liner over me as a kind of blanket which kept me warm enough (if only in my mind!)..I love this forum! So far all my queries, observations have been met with answers & helpful comments. Thanks again!
I've been lucky enough to get 3 of these bags for less than £10 each including postage off ebay over the last few months in as new condition. They can easily be attached to each other (using the ties) to suit the conditions and I've been using an old US poncho liner inside them as well (its exactly the same size).
I have noticed that one of them marked with 'syntex' on the label seems to have a better quality of material/stitching than the other two.
I believe the British army is getting a new two bag sleeping system soon, so thats why the market is being flooded with the jungle bags (despite many of them being only 2 or 3 years old). Its one of the best pieces of surplus I've seen on the market for years - although obviously not a replacement for a decent winter bag.
The bags were and are issued for summer use in Iraq.
OK if you can pick one up cheap (less then a tenner is a bargain)
Pack down pretty small, fairly light in weight, have a good zip down one side and the bottom so can be used as a blanket.
As with most army kit, virtually bombproof ;)
Ive got one of these bags and there a quality bit of kit in my opinion, add a silk liner and its a real versatile piece of kit.
