View Full Version : Rough Close ~ Midlands ~ September'11 Meet.

decorum
14-08-2011, 12:02
Meet date: 23 ~ 25 September 2011 ~ Arrival time is from 16:00 on the 23rd.

As per usual, the location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.btck.co.uk/).

Site fees are £4.40 (http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows. net/site1875/List/RC Price List 2011.pdf) per person per night ~ please see 'Helpful info' .
Please pay on arrival. If you haven't been before, someone will be able to point you in my direction.

Edits will be highlighted in red and italicised.

WE WILL NOW BE ON PC11 AND NOT ON LEADER TRAINING AS PREVIOUSLY STATED

In the pic below, the virtual 'campfire' placement pin marks the approximate position of the bottom corner of PC11. The BLUE line marks the approximate route of the track which leads to the main access point to the pitch.

I have put a couple of extra details onto the map ~ toilets, water etc and I'm leaving both RED and BLUE routes on for reference ;) .

Location info taken from the Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.btck.co.uk/) website:

City of Coventry Scout County
Rough Close Scout Campsite
Tanners Lane
Berkswell
CV7 7DD

OS: Grid Ref: SP264779 (Site Access) SP266786 (Site Centre)

This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome ~ please see 'Helpful info'.

Helpful info:

The list isn't exhaustive - common sense applies. If in doubt, ask!

Any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which is above the camping fees will be automatically considered to be a donation to Rough Close campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.
Forum members are responsible for themselves*, the kit they use and their own actions (and any non member accompanying them) at the Meet. * This includes meals and cooking. It is up to each registered member to make sure that they have enough suitable food for their stay and and also for planning/arranging for any replenishment if/as need be.
Under 18's must be accompanied by at least one parent (or legal guardian).
You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee ~ The sites bin is the big orange thing in the Camper’s Car Park.
When visiting others, do not leave your rubbish in their pitch (or in a communal area) ~ take it with you and dispose of it yourself. The sites bin is the big orange thing in the Camper’s Car Park.
Their is no communal bin in the Communal Area.
Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited! Please don't walk through another groups pitch whilst drinking alcohol and/or smoking.
Please keep ‘colourful language’ reasonable and to a reasonable volume.
Vehicles need to be parked up in the campers car park.
Wood fires must be raised and contained. Periodically there is a shortage of wood available to burn - if you want to cook on an open fire, bring a supply of wood or charcoal.
Due to changes in site policy, we cannot cut down standing dead wood. The same goes for green wood ~ damaged or not.
It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.
In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site; outstanding fees will still be owed.
Time remaining until the Meet (http://countdown.free-and-online.com/?timer=kielzy0819).
The Old Hands would do well to keep an eye on our Social Group area for this one ;) .
Noise levels after 11 p.m need to be respectful of other campers desire to sleep at socially accepted hours.
Noise levels before 07:30 a.m need to be respectful of other campers desire to have a bit of a lie in.
Chopping (or crackin/snapping etc) wood at 'silly o'clock' is not acceptable. Please make sure that you prepare wood for the start of the next day well before dusk ~ and if you can't be sure, bring an alternative method of heating water/cooking.

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

It's fine if you want to:

be on your own
lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over etc
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that :lmao:
practice flora and fauna ID
so on and so forth ...
This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.

There will be one or more workshops available at this Meet. I
nformation of what/where/when etc and spaces/places on them will be made available at a meeting (aka Morning Prayers) to be held at 09.30 on Saturday Morning ~ attenence of Morning Prayers is in no way mandatory.
Please note that the 'Carve a Netting Needle' workshop is now full.

Copy and paste yada yada ...

Hi,

I'm waiting to check with SWMBO to see if my diary allows. One point to re-itterate I'm an assistant with a Scout Group and we camped here a few weeks ago. Whilst there are lots of trees there is little or no wood to collect, standing, fallen, ill green wood etc as hoards of Scouts/Cubs over the year have cleaned the place out so you will need to bring your own - I know it was said before but it really is a problem if you haven't got your own wood pile, in addition to the rules above.

No restrictions on family groups attending as far as I know... :)

The only thing to bear in mind is I doubt there'll be any other kids of a similar age there as well so you'll be their main source of entertainment for the weekend :D

Luke will soon ditch the eyepatch in favour of a helmet and sword once he meets Wayland :lmao:

Hi I was just wondering about some more definition on where we can and cannot go. OP says

As with our previous Meet, we are on The Leader Training Field (NOT on PC11).

Does this mean that we are only allowed on the leader training field, or does this mean that the communal area is designated to PC11 and we are allowed to spread ourselfs out within the whole forrest? I'm wondering this as I would like to go and bring 2 friends, but concerned we might not find our own lil secluded area. Thanks

We're booked to use the wooded areas adjacent to the Leaders Training field but we're not allowed to spread through out Rough Close wherever it takes your fancy. When you arrive either Decorum or one of the 'old hands' will advise you just what the boundaries are and where you can and can't pitch up :)

The area is large enough that you ought to be fine having your own little spot and not be cheek by jowl with everyone else.

As Steve said, we're booked to be on the Leader Training Field and we can make use of the surrounding wooded bit ~ including some of the plantation.

The reason for the (NOT on PC11) is wholely down to us having switched pitch ~ up until we booked the Leader Training Field for the July Meet we had been using PC11 (PC is the abbreviation of Pocket Campsite).

As Steve said, we're booked onto a specific area and we need to keep within that area ~ but finding/using a secluded* spot within the booked area is fine  .

* Please be aware that absolute seclusion is doubtful and certainly can't be guaranteed.

Hello all!

Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Ozzy from Warwickshire. I stumbled across this site and the midland meet threads here after a bit of a search. I had a look at the photos from a recent meet and it looks great fun.

I may be younger than some (I'm 31) but in the last 18 months I've really had a renewed interest and love for being outdoors camping/hiking/fishing etc. As a kid I was always out in the woods making "bases" and learning basic bushcraft skills I suppose. I went through the cubs, scouts and Army cadets but as may be the case for many I drifted away from it all a bit into my late teens and twenties.

Lately I've been spending more time outside and invested in some good outdoor/survival kit which I'm constantly adding to. I don't get out into the woods enough and i don't know anyone who shares these interests and doing it totally alone isn't always the best fun and I have no one to learn from apart from my own experiences and research. I would really like to come to one of these meets if I am welcome? I have most things necessary to see me through a few days in the woods (means of shelter, suitable clothing, tools and cook set etc) and I respect nature and believe I am a sensible/conscientious person. Littering and being disrespectful to others is not something I tolerate!

the only trouble I would have is committing to meets a long time in advance due to the nature of my work where I may be expected to turn up to a job at short notice. If I can make it I would be really interested in coming along this month before it starts getting too cold and maybe out of my depth. It would be a good opportunity to find out what additional kit may be required heading into the colder months and to meet some new people and hopefully gain some experience.

Please let me know what I need to do to join the group as it were. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have for me!

Thanks everyone,

Ozzy

First of all hello and welcome to the forum Ozzy :)

Please let me know what I need to do to join the group as it were. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have for me!

Apart from the most secret and arcane iniation rites that you will have to perform under a moonlit night :evilangel: not lot :lmao:

There's several newbies who have their name down to attend this meet so you won't be alone during the iniation  We're a friendly bunch and you'll be made to feel welcome.

Just read the rules and add your name to the list. If you need to know anything else feel free to ask away :)

Edit: Bringing plenty of nice beverages of an alcoholic nature to share is an extremely good way of being made extremely welcome :D

Hi Ozzy great if you can make it for September but if real life gets in the way then that is just Sod's law kicking in.

As regards colder months you could always come along for a day visit just to see how people vary in their set up - you will probably end up totally confused but you shoud be able to see what adaptations you may need to make to your existing stuff to be able to get along comfortably when the weather is colder and damper. (A key feature is to be able to delude yourself on that point - I have achieved a black belt in delusion and am aiming for my first Dan (!))

Bit of a tangent, but if i bring a reel of bowstring and a reel of serving is anyone going able to show me (name your tipple in advance) how to make a bow string and to wip the ends into loops?

Despite its inherent wonkyness im rather proud of the father and son bow that george talked me thru at the moot, i'd like to be able to make a bow string that fits and then i can repeat to make another in the future.

Have a great time one and all, I don't think I'll be back from Cornwall in time (10 days in the lavvu :red: ).

Ahh that'll be a shame Martin.

Hope you have a good time with your dad though :)

Depends what kind of a string you want, I can happily bring along our string jig and knock you out recurve strings but they may not suit. I can also have a look for some Flemish twist instructions if no one else volunteers.

Thanks for the welcome Mesquite, Elines and Wayland! :) Glad to know if I make it to this one I won't have to face initiation alone :D you say under moonlight?....I'm hoping for it to be overcast then! ;)

Thankfully I'm already about a blue belt in delusion I'd say, these skills really come in handy when working out the reasons why I haven't caught anything when night fishing!

Really hope I can make it along, thanks for what already feels like a very warm welcome guys. Now to carefully plan what kit to bring, so as to not completely embarrass myself on my first outing with you guys! :p I'm more tempted to bring a tent than tarp for this one as I don't have a hammock or bivi bag just yet (which I think going forwards in the future may be my prefered option to save weight).

Really looking forward to see what kit you guys take out and to practicing and learning a few new tricks :)

As a general guide, Don't get too hung up on how you think we'll look at your gear.

I certainly don't travel light to meet ups, I've usually got enough kit for a small army.

Make sure you have comfortable sleeping kit and shelter, a tent is absolutely fine. Bring a chair for sitting around the fire in the evening (Everyone misses that one first time round)

Other than that you just need some food, comfortable clobber to stand up in and anything you want to mess around with over the weekend.

As Nesmuk says, "We don't go to the woods to rough it."

If there's anything particular you need help with just ask, everyone is really willing to help or point you towards someone who can.

On the ground, with or without a tent, or between trees ~ it's all cool  . As mentioned above, comfort is key to a good night's kip and you should utilise what use what you're happy using ;).

One of the upsides of Meets is that you can pitch your tent and then sleeping under a tarp ~ if you find that you don't like being under a tarp, get up and get into the tent.

I got given a archery starter kit for xmas one year with a but target and a beginner recurve with a couple of strings. Ive never had lessons but plan to get in to it. Bodging the bow i quite enjoyed.

The things is that I don't want to break your bow by putting on a string with too little stretch.

There are several different materials used to make the actual string, I have plenty of Dacron which would suit a beginners recurve for example and several different fast flight/ dyneema which suit competition recurves. Softer longbow etc strings can be linen (or maybe Dacron) using a Flemish twist or endless loop, not having one I have never actually made one but I am sure between us all we can work from some books.

My son shoots for the darkside (compound or wheely bow) and it just is not worth the risk of making strings and cables for those unless you are expert with specialist kit, we buy them and have them fitted!

Servings are similar on them all and I have a selection of soft twist, diamondback etc serving threads and tools.

Ah i understand now. I ordered a few days back a reel of string and some serving thread from bow sports.

I dont mind too much if the bow breaks, its the first of many. It will no doubt break some time as it was tillered by myself with one eye closed. (ask mr fenna he was stood next to me!)

There is a remote possibility that I might uncloak my anonymity and put in an appearance if I don't have anything more pressing on the occasion.

It has to be said however that I have no great competence in the usual rules of social engagement being one of life's born loners, I can't say I have much competence in what is conventionally described as "bushcraft either" perhaps someone can show me how to put a decent edge on my axe :)

Keep an eye out for the Northwood Meets as well~ nice site and a good crowd. There'll be a thread in the Local Meet-ups sub forum.

Anyone got any sage words ref younglings on a meet? Or can point out a thread ref meet responsibilities for noobs

I'm not too sure what you mean by the bit above ~ Have a gander at Cobweb's thread 'Bushcraft Ettiquette (Resurrected)' (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27365&p=361725#post361725) ~ which contains Wayland's post on sharps safety and also a link to his/the original 'Bushcraft Etiquette' thread. The other thing to mind is the part of post #01 of this thread which says registered members are responsible for themselves and also responsible for any non-member they bing along.

Please feel free to ask for any clarification(s) ~ it's always better to ask  .

i was wondering if we bear-in-the-woods with a spade etc! I have read post#1:)

There are a couple of toilet blocks on site ~ so no need for doing as a bear in the woods  .

I'd definately keep an eye open for a post #01 edit towards the end of the week though ;)

I've got a coupla questions which I haven'r answered through post #1 or the general etiquette guideliness (apologies if some breach propriety, am noob to group/ forum camping)...

1. should we bring tools to help with your planned maintainence and if so, what?
2. is the naughty corner for general loud, lewd and drunken behaviour? Is there anything frowned on especially? (at least I'll know where to find HWMBO...!)
3. If I can get the chainsaw out can I bring a swedish candle to try? Might there be trunks there if c/saws are allowed- I know I only have 1 suitable trunk...

A few changes to the set up :o ~ all the information below has been edited into post~01.

WE WILL NOW BE ON PC11 AND NOT ON LEADER TRAINING AS PREVIOUSLY STATED.

In the pic below, the virtual 'campfire' placement pin marks the approximate position of the bottom corner of PC11. The BLUE line marks the approximate route of the track which leads to the main access point to the pitch.

I have put a couple of extra details onto the map ~ toilets, water etc and I'm leaving both RED and BLUE routes on for reference .

There will be one or more workshops available at this Meet.

Information of what/where/when etc and spaces/places on them will be made available at a meeting (aka Morning Prayers) to be held at 09.30 on Saturday Morning ~ attenence of Morning Prayers is in no way mandatory.

Please note that the 'Carve a Netting Needle' workshop is now full.

I've got a coupla questions which I haven'r answered through post #1 or the general etiquette guideliness (apologies if some breach propriety, am noob to group/ forum camping)...

Always better to ask  ~ especially as there are a few changes afoot.

1. should we bring tools to help with your planned maintainence and if so, what?

You just need to bring tools to get your own camp chores sorted. There's a bit of site _stuff_ going on at the moment, so wood that still has roots attached to it needs to be left alone (whether it's dead or alive). We'll cover it in a bit more depth at Morning Prayers (see post #01).

2. is the naughty corner for general loud, lewd and drunken behaviour? Is there anything frowned on especially? (at least I'll know where to find HWMBO...!)

A bit ~ but not excessively so. Acceptable behaviour is generally covered by

Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited! Please don't walk through another groups pitch whilst drinking alcohol and/or smoking.
Please keep ‘colourful language’ reasonable and to a reasonable volume

which is in the Helpful Info section of post #01.

If you're in doubt, tone it down and watch what the regulars do ~ they know the score.

Although the pitch is ours to make use of, it's a scout site and the little beggars do have a habit of, every-so-often, popping up here and there ~ and, if they see 'stuff' going on, they do tell their leaders. Ask, at the Meet, about ripping the heads off of invisible rabbits ;) .

Again, if in doubt, just ask yourself whether it might annoy an axe and knife weilding neighbour :lmao:
.

3. If I can get the chainsaw out can I bring a swedish candle to try? Might there be trunks there if c/saws are allowed- I know I only have 1 suitable trunk...

You can make and bring a nurding ~ you won't be able to fire up a chain saw on site and doing so will elicit a negative reaction and endanger our ability to hold Meets on the site.

4. Got a calor bottle fire but presume this will be surplus to the main fire... should I bring with wood in case and leave in vehicle?

If you wish to cook on a wood/charcoal fire, then you need to have a way to have it raised and contained ~ much of the site is mulch and it can hold a smoulder under ground for a good time.

There will be at leat one communal type fire. All are welcome to join the circle(s), offerings of a chunk or two of wood tend to be greatfully received ;) .

5. is the vehicle park a goodly walk from the camp?

We can (generally) drop kit off at the car park attached to the field adjacent to PC11. This car park is for the use of those using the cabin/field and there will be a group on it this weekend. So it's a case of check for space, ask whether it's okay to drop kit off and, if all goes well, return the vehicle to The Campers Car Park.

Thank you, folk :) Best go get on with that underquilt now :) I'm presuming there'll be about 50% swingers and can't WAIT to not be a loner for a change!! Very much looking forward to meeting any woodwomen going =)

There will be a fair chunk of tree huggers on the pitch  .

Looking at the list there's at least one possibly two women besides yourself coming to the meet :)

I usually play host to a fair few folks around my fire... whilst we all enjoy having a few drinks of an evening  it's usually never to excess so it tends to be the not so naughty corner

Feel free to bring your chair and join us at any time and if you wish to cook bring your pots and pans :). As Decorum said a contribution of wood will be gratefully received :D

In case anyone's missed it, Google Earth is working in some older arial pics ~ some older arial pics are quite recent  . Coventry's alternative arial pics are from 1945 ~ the misalignment of the over-lay on the old pic is nothing to do with me; Google hasn't been wholey accurate in its matching up of old and new :( .

Anyway, the pic below is from the year prior to Rough Close coming into Scoutings possession ~ and yes, it was predominently scrubland with nothing much above head height :yikes::camping:

presumably why it is called "rough close"

The origin of the name is lost :dunno: , but it's been known as Rough Close for the past few centuries. At one time, along with most of the surrounding area, it was part of the Forest of Arden and it's definately classed as ancient/semi-ancient replanted woodland. My comment of 'nothing much above head height' might have been a bit misleading :sad6: .

As with many/most of our previous Meets, this Meet is open to Sales/Trades/swaps.
As ever, forum rules for sales/swaps/trades apply. The forum rules governing/guiding sales/swaps/trades are extended to cover scouting and the site ~ and, other than where I am a vested party, also extended to myself.

It is easier all round if we set a time and place to do swaps/trades/sales ~ we'll let you know when and where at Saturday Morning Prayers

Is saturday morning prayers a eupherism or actual prayers? Is rough close a religeous meet? And is there a primary denomination or more importantly, denominations or faiths that you would prefer did not attend? Just wanted to check I'm not misunderstanding, I love to see/ be with folk with faith but would it make regulars feel uncomfortable if I didn't join prayers....

Far from religious. It is getting a bit confusing though and I've been going regularly for over two years! Just turn up and do your thing within the rules and everything will be grand. It isn't as rule intense as it looks on here, Phil's just covering everything just in case as is the norm thesedays. No need to even turn up for the morning briefing if you fancy a lie in. Don't read too much into this, it'll be a relaxing weekend in the woods!

Is saturday morning prayers a eupherism or actual prayers?

It's just a euphemism, like 'The Naughty Corner' it's a term that has been grabbed from (I believe) the BcUK Moot.

It is getting a bit confusing though and I've been going regularly for over two years!

Yup, can't disagree :o . It's the late inclusion of the workshops which is causing the issue ~ that and we haven't got prior experience of working through the issues to make it seem organised :o .

It isn't as rule intense as it looks on here, Phil's just covering everything just in case as is the norm thesedays.

Again, as Chad says, it's a relaxing weekend in the woods and, in part, I'm butt covering :lmao: :o ~ unfortunately some of the guidelines/rules have needed inclusion due to Meet attendees 'forgetting' that they're not on site alone and can't just do what they want :( .

Whats the score with 'workshops' then? Announced at the saturday morning meetup to take bookings or are they much more informal than that, just kinda drop in round a fire type things?

A little over a week ago it was decided to do scheduled rather than the more usual impromptu workshops and we haven't had time to get the ins-and-outs properly sorted :o ~ the Old Hands (members of the social group*) have been invited to a meeting on the Friday evening and, at this meeting, we'll be sorting out the what/when/where/how many in a session etc details then.

The Saturday morning meeting (Morning Prayers) is to let everyone know what was decided ~ plus a few other bits and pieces of info ~ so the workshops will be announced at the meeting and, depending upon the Old Hands decisions of Friday eve, spaces will either be made as a workshop is announced or after the Morning Prayers have finished and people will be pointed in the direction of each person they need to see to get a space on a workshop.

There won't be a mad mass of workshops ~ I just want to set a format for dealing with this which will need a minimum of tweaking as we go along ;) whilst attempting to not cause too much of an excess of confusion :o :lmao:.

I've no doubt that there'll also be the usual on the spot/impromtu workshops going on as well.

Great meet... had a really enjoyable time seeing old and new faces around the campfire :) Sadly no pics from me this time as I forgot to bring my camera :o

Thanks to Phil for facilitating it so well as usual and to Wayland for the use of his chute over the communal area :D

As Wayland said the mini workshops worked well and people seemed to enjoy them also. Hopefully they'll become a new addition to future meets, fingers crossed.

As for chiggers... so far just 2 bites but time will tell

Awww guys, we had the most excellent time, thank you, everyone, soooo much for your wonderful reception of the noobs! We've come away with so much inspiration, chuckled at so many good tales overheard at the fire, received much needed and very sensitivly given advice....and lovely momentos which will be used frequently and with fond memories of a first meet. I was glad the sun was smiling on the righteous today for you :)

Your informal workshops were brill, everyone had their own lil revelation moments 'shroom walking and fire starting. Thank you especially for the forebearance shown as I repeatedly performed my amazing spider-on-acid dance and song routine over your guyropes!

Thanks to all those old and new who made it up, down and across. Definately a good one ~ I think scheduled* workshops might become a feature; but not necessarily for each and every Meet.

I've no doubt that those who weren't able to make it will take advantage of future opportunities  and the next RC Meet will be the TORM (http://www.reenactorsmarket.co.uk/) Meet from 11 to 13 November (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/calendar.php?month=11&year=2011&calendarid=3&s=).

Lovely pics :) We've been suffering from erupting bites too so I've just posted my best medicinal masseage bar recipe on the medicinal/ bug bites thread at http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79233&p=970008#post970008

Its really helping, as it does with most irritations/ chaffing etc :)

I didn't have my camera with me at the weekend and so couldn't take any pics (apart from those with my phone but can't work out how to download them yet, and I forget to use it anyway most of the time - a phone is for making phone calls - right?).

One of the workshops was run by Steve (Mesquite) on making a 'net needle'.

I attended and he showed some new knife carving techniques that I hadn't tried before. My efforts were pretty poor by everyone else's standards but at least this will give you some idea of what a net needle looks like

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-TpHf7C_2h9U/ToIfPT0C2OI/AAAAAAAABi4/3hex9Ft08k4/s640/CIMG6170.JPG

(I didn't deliberately make the photo blurred but thinking about it is is probably just as well as ......)

I need to emphasise that Steve gave very clear instructions so all the wonky lines etc are all down to my (lack of) knife/carving skills

Steve also gave an impromptu demo on how to use a net needle to make nets. Too fiddly for me but was something that i liked to see being done.

So thanks again Steve.

Thanks for a great time everyone!
I particularly enjoyed the fungi walk and the banter!
I reserve thanks to Decorum as when he met up with me at the trade show we both attended on Mon he interupted a long, deep conversation I was having with Ray Mears ...by sqeezing my bum!
Phil then went on to take over the conversation, grab autographs etc...and Ray found it necessary to run away from the bad jokes!
However Phil did return my ridgeline which I had left behind when I hastily broke camp ...so I guess he gets my thanks after all! :)
Cheers
to all!

Me and Adam had a fantastic time as usual. Adam got chiggered again but I got off with 4 mozzi bites on my face and hand and a couple of midgie type bites behind my ear.
It is a small price to pay I explained to an itching Adam and he agreed and asked when the next meet is.
Thanks to everyone for a great meet.
