Removing plastic handles from fire steels

I have a Primas fire steel with a solid plastic grey handle. I'd like to remove the handle for smaller kits and want advice as to the best method from anyone who has removed such a handle. Please, no advice on buying another type.

Put it upside down in a vice and tap the handle gently with a light hammer until it slides up the rod and comes off.

I've rehandled about 20 of them so far and thats what I do.
