Is there a source for these in the UK?
I already have the NATO ones but they are bear paw and great for in the woods, but the NATO ones have the long tail which seems to be better for open country.

I have some of those, the snowshoes themselves are pretty good, the bindings are nearly useless. They are designed for the large white "Mickey Mouse" arctic boots and tend to come off most other footwear.
I would expect if you have to buy some from the states, the cost of shipping would be horrible. Good luck finding some in the UK. I do know they are originally from the Canadian Forces.

From what I read the bindings are rubbish as you say.
There were some on ebay but they are all US Based and I could guess the shipping would be high plus any customs duty if it was required.
But I will still have a look and keep an eye for them here.
Just saw thes in a german store. They also have the bindings, check for 'bindung' http://www.ranger-shop.de/Am-Fuss/Socken/Zubehoer/Alpinausruestung/Original-US-Schneeschuhe-aus-Magnesium.html
