View Full Version : Newbie alert!
Hello there everyone! :) I've been lurking on here for a couple of days, and thought I'd better introduce myself.
I'm a student from the South Wales Valleys, but during term time I'm at university in Reading.
My interest in bushcraft has probably stemmed from living very close to forestry, and reading a few dodgy SAS manuals... I had the opportunity to learn a lot about bushcraft this week after doing a short course (thanks, Ed) which I really enjoyed! Carved my first ever spoon, which I am very proud of even though it's rather rough looking - some of the pictures I've seen on here of people's first spoons really put mine to shame! I don't mind though, as this just encourages me to try and do a better one next time. :D I really want to carry on with bushcraft and learn as much as I can - anyone got any suggestions for what a newbie can get up to around the South Wales area to get me started?

Hi Wenie,
Welcome to the forum.
There ought to be bags of opportunity for many aspects of bushcraft in the valleys - even if that mainly involves keeping dry and out of the rain :p Remember, us Cymraig have as many words for "Rain" as the Innuit have for "Snow" ;)

Hiya Wenie, glad you enjoyed the summer school.... it was an expierence for me aswell trying to teach wilderness skills in the institute instead of being up in the mountains. At least we managed to sneak out for the last day ;)
As for what to do in south wales, well there is loads!!! we have all the forsestry and country parks, the brecon beacons on our door step.... we are also a short drive to the coast which is great for foraging. Keep an eye out on the local websites for events comming up..... many rangers put on 1 day nature walks or fungi forages during the seasons.... our local rambling group do a great one..... margam park holds woodfairs aswell as field archery and longbow competitions. And of course, don't forget the S.Wales members of BCUK get together occasionaly to meetup and go for a wander, check out the meetups and social chatter forum for more info.
Anyway, welcome to the forums.....
:)
Ed
hello Wenie
come on in and make yourself at home, there are plenty of us here in wales!
Hiya Wenie mate,
As has previously been said there's loads of us here in SW and loads to do. A few of us met up a few weeks ago and were on about trying to make it a regular meet. Me & Stuart were out for the night this weekend and that was an experience I can tell you - no food, no sleeping and stone tools!!
Welcome I'm sure you'll enjoy it here.
Marc
Hi wenie, welcome to BCUK.
Good to hear Ed has you working :D Don't worry about the spoons, not everyone can make them, that's why the Chinese invented chopsticks :D :D
Hi Wenie, welcome aboard mate
Hi, welcome.
Ahh Reading Uni bar, I’ve been off my face a few times in there! Have fun.

Hmmm, wonder if learning to carve a decent spoon or learning to eat with chopsticks would be easier for future bushcraft attempts... Spoon carving, methinks! ;)
I have met many bushcrafters and it would seem Chinese food is the way ahead :D
Good luck to you on spoons, PW did a good tutorial an making them, but as with us all I think you will pick it up :D
Get stuck in here we are all mad so no problems :D :D :D :D
Welcome aboard!! :)
Glad you enjoyed the bushcraft taster, you'll find plenty of like minded people here, enjoy!!
