Been looking at the OS maps and there is a massive expanse of woodland over at Garly Moor and up to Kirney Quarries. Has anyone been up there. If so whats it like in terms of woodland?

Evening,
Walked the dog at Gartly Moor once (from Forestry Comission car park), last year I think. Big patches had been cleared and re-planted recently but think the wider area would be well worth a bit of exploring. Older stands of mixed woodland (but mostly pine type plantation I think) and a quarry if I remember correctly. Didn't see much of the area so would be up for a fact finding mission sometime.

Hi
Just saw this post...don't know how I missed it earlier!
I've been up Gartly Moor on many an occasion and have ridden bikes and horses, walked, ran and skied around the area...it is a great spot, and would be well worth a visit to recce it for 'bushcrafty' activities. Some areas have been clear-felled recently, but there is still a good mix of different age-classes of forest, as DB points out; quite agree with him about the fact-finding mission.
A'ra best,
DM ;)
