View Full Version : Hampshire Meet Anyone Interested?
I'm in discussion with an airsoft site in Hampshire that may let us rent the woodland site from them for a weekend and wanted to gage people’s interest. Hopefully it would be a Friday-Sunday thing.
I'm hoping a few hardened bushcrafters would like to come and possible show a newbie like me a few skills while also enjoying a weekend in the woods.
The site is close to M27 so easy to get to even if you’re not from Hampshire. Probably thinking around 10 people max since this seems a sensible number from reading other posts on meets. I have asked about facilities and fire lighting so just waiting for a response and will probably ask one of there site team to join us so they can rest easy we wont burn the place down.
Never know if it's a success they may let us there again.

Good work Ian!
I'm sure there'll be a nice spot for a camp.
Depending on the location, I might be interested. =]

dates depending I'm keen and I'm sure my buddy Brumstar123 will come along too.
It's early days yet since only had 1 e-mail from the site owner saying it’s possible but no further info as yet.
The site is based near Wickham and J10 of M27:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=po17+5nd&safe=off&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Fareham+PO17+5ND,+United +Kingdom&gl=uk&sqi=2&ll=50.887658,-1.192918&spn=0.011533,0.027423&t=h&z=15
Out of interest how many of you are avid Bushcrafters and done this sort of thing several times before. Since I’m totally new to this Bushcraft stuff so looking to learn from others.
Hi
Would describe myself as an all round outdoors man with experience from mountain and canoe expeditions. I do have quite an extensive collection of tarps and stoves so might be able to rustle up a little show and tell/tutorial on that? Don't own any camouflage clothing but very keen on outdoor cooking with an open fire.

Brumstar123 and I have been at this a few years now and we are actively out in the woods doing it for real regularly, also practicing in the garden, were no experts but we have learnt a lot of useful techniques that we would happily share. we have both been on courses which have developed our skills and picked up lots of great tips at various bushcraft moots that we have been to. basically if I know it I will happily share it!
So the list so far depending on dates and what the site owner says today when I go up to visit.

Problem being it's an active Airsoft site so if I cant get Friday night to Sunday night would people still be interested in doing just a Friday night, Saturday thing leaving Sat night or early Sun morning before the Airsoft players arrive?
Just come back from the site.
The owner is happy for us to have bushcraft there only restriction is NO HUNTING OR TRAPPING.
The site has no water supply so will have to bring our own. (Think I have a big water container somewhere)
He can provide chemical toilets at the base camp/car park area if we want or we can dig a camp Karzi. (As long as it’s done properly)
Fires are allowed as long as they are dug down to the clay layer or raised up since the woods have peat soil.
We will have free reign over the woodland area and can build bivys and collect firewood without restrictions.
Price is £100 a day rent. So if 10 of us went from Sat-Sun it would only be £20 a head.
Availability wise they usually don’t use the site last weekend of the month.
They will have one of there team to join us for the time we are there due to insurance restrictions.
I have attached a map of the site for you to look at.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/ispivey/CSW001.jpg
That all sounds good, nice job on organising this. Price sounds reasonable for all day use with a toilet a well. End of May no good for me due to another commitment but following one should be OK.

I'd be interested in this date dependant. Like Nigel, end of May isn't good for me but end of June ought to be ok.
Last weekend in June is 25th-26th.
Would people be happy with this date if it is available?

Go for it...you'll be forever running round trying to accomadate everyone and there will always be someone who can't make a particular date
Choose that one.
How are you going to sort payment etc. You don't want to be left with people dropping out last minute & covering shortfall? Ill check dates with the other half but a Saturday to Sunday job should be OK then. Again good effort on arranging a venue.

I can couch for gregor's knowledge, especially the manic formula for the perfect whisky mac! :)
Sounds like you’re already trying the formula. :lmao:
I’ll have to wait and see if that date is available but being 2 months away hopefully it should be.
As for money it depends when the owner wants the money. If he wants it in advance I’ll take Non- refundable Pay pal from people to confirm there place so that way unless they have a good reason for not turning up (I will except Death certificates and Dr’s Notes only  ) no one is left out of pocket.
Never know if this is a success and the Site owner are happy with us I could try and make this a regular thing.
Once i have confirmation of the date i'll start a new thread.

Just spoke to the owner.
Unfortunately he has a group doing laser tag on the Saturday so 25th-26th June is not good. BUT he can do 23rd-24th July if that’s OK with all you folks.
Get back to me ASAP so i can then book the site please.
I can do 23rd-24th July :) (week after I get back from america :D)

Hopefully if this goes successfully it may become a regular meet if the site owner is happy with us and I’ll organise more.

I would have thought New Forest Show was Hampshire Ambulance patch?

Ok it seems I keep buying more bushcraft kit but still haven’t been out to play with it yet so I was wandering if people would still be interested in a Hampshire Meet at the Airsoft site which I tried to organise earlier in the year?
If so I need an idea of numbers and preferred months to hold it. Once I know what sort of month’s suit I can approach the owner to find out which dates are available.
BUMP!
No one interested in a Hampshire meet??

yes Burnbake campsite in the purbecks, woodland camping, open fires allowed, cheap too. may be worth a quick search to see if there are any woodland campsites in Hampshire? google may bring up some ideas on sites that allow fires and have woodland. if I get time later I will have a search.
I've had a look at some New Forest camp sites from all bells and whistles to basic with no facilities but doubt you could dig a camp karzi so that may be a no go. Anyone else got an idea of a good camp site we could go to?
Must admit the Burnbake place looks good:

Hi Grendel
I haven't tried this place myself; it regularly advertises in The Bushcraft Magazine, and looks interesting at least. The place is called The Plantation in East Meon, Hampshire. The ad says:
Attention Bushcrafters: 2.5 acre site to yourself or group (maximum 10); light a campfire; beautiful countryside; abundant wildlife; option to tent Tentipi with woodburning stove; logs supplied; peace & seclusion; no light pollution
Pre-book only tel 01730 261570 or 07801 760534. £40 per night for the site; £60 with Tentipi & stove
As I say I haven't been & have no connection with the site, but it sounds like what you're looking for.

OK it's an open field and has very nice facilitys but you are allowed camp fires and they can sell you the wood or you bring your own. Depends if we want a proper woodland bushcraft thing of a social camping thing to get to know each other?

The Basingstoke site has nothing booked and mentions April is possible, it is quite expensive at £10 pp pn but you will possibly get exclusive use for the weekend.
East meon is 40quid per night for the site so if 8 people are in that reduces the price by half.
If Wayne goes (free tuition from Forest Knights!) do we have 6+ others to commit to a definate date?
We have the 16th or 23rd weekends as possibles.

I'm more than happy for somone else to organise. The original venue i was going to use would cost £100 a day but you would have a couple acres of woods and a portaloo but no water on site. i think if we go to a establised venue it would be better.

Oh wow, I never knew there was a campsite, or even a wild-campsite, so close to my home! At £10 a night it's a little steep but for that wild camping experience that is not illegal it's certainly something to look into!
I think I'll also rear my head and proclaim I am also interested in meets near Basingstoke.

My mate knows the local farmers, and one of them owns woodland. If there's no news on the other sites then I can get the details and ask if we can use his site for a couple of nights?

Hi All,
Southey pointed me in the direction of this thread. Depending on dates etc, I'd be happy to host this at my woodlands near Alton.
I'm pretty busy over March - June so proably wouldn't be able to attend myself to be able to unlock the gate for 4x4's to get somewhat closure, but if you are all happy walking in then Southey and Bushwacker Bob knows the score with using the woodlands.
If you want to use the woodlands let me know dates and numbers etc, best to email or call me on the mobile listed on my website.
I would simply request a £10/person contribution to the site costs.

Thats the spirit, I just leave a jerry can in the car, treat it as a water source, it makes you have to walk for a replen, and plan your water usage if you dont want to walk to often,

but it really isnt far to trundle for water:)
loo blocks are for sissies :p
When you say it's an unmade road to the woods would i get a Impreza up the track since i also have a big water carrier (beer barrel). Or is it hevily pitted with bad ground clearance?

its a green lane, I would say i could get a normal road car up there, but I wouldn't do it with a shiny car as you woud have to hug the hedge through one three meter section where water has washed a small trough out on one side,
:( Definily not suitable for a shiny lowerd Impreza wagon then LOL:lmao:
Ha! no, though the parking at the bottom would be absolutely fine:)
Dont get me wrong it sounds great but I still want to find out about the Peterfield place that way gives a choice of 2 and may even get the Scout place for free.
Mind you it isnt untill 20th April so should know the location by then hopfully :lmao:
there are a few more pics of Andys site on this thread, its a proper nice spot.
http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=87579
I got up there in the Repsignia,..easy.
i would have not a single problem with leaving the car at the bottom of the lane , and did so for 3 days.
i love this site,..and travelled the 4 plus hours from Yorkshire twice to stay here,..(though i think the good craic from the company of a couple of mates was a reason too)
new to bushcraft or not its a perfect site ,.
why not go CAMPING there instead of BUSHCRAFTING, that way it wont be as daunting,..
if you took a giant aluminium box full of chairs and sausages then you'll be fine,

If its at Andys place, I'm in. I'll find out when Wayne is free and set a date. Southey will help too.;)
Thanks Andy.
Grendel, I once drove a peugeot 406 up that lane, if you cant manage in a scooby you need new transport and its a part of the county where theft doesn't happen.
The lane isn't much of a problem for non 4x4 (unless you carry on past our main gate into the woods, or go further up the green lane) just take it slow, its very firm/rocky ground so you won't get stuck if it's wet either. Plenty of room for 2 or 3 cars by the gate, please don't block the new horse gate though. Also room for 4/5 cars down the end of the track.
Sound like we have a site then (Thank you very much Andy)can somone who knows more about the site put the details on the other thread please:

Out of interst whats the difference between wild camping and bushcrafting since i was planning to bring a small 1 man tent since still havent got any bungees or paracord for the Tarp yet.
Also a recomended kit list may be an idea since i know i'm not the only bushcraft newbie going.

Wild camping, to me, is the act of spending nights camping in wild places and bushcrafting is that HUGE topic that we typically practice whilst wild camping, whilst on a days walk, and so on. Wild camping, whether tarp or tent, is wild :)
We decided on a date for this yet? I haven't checked up on this thread for a while! I am going to dig back anyway but just in case I miss anything :D
Duh! I see the other thread now!

That site looks superb, thanks Andy!
Is it far to carry the gear from the cars to the camp area? Only I overdid it last year and gave myself a hernia trying to do some stupid form of press-up! As long as it's not miles and miles I should fine :)

I live above a farm shop, so if anyone wants me to bring anything let me know.
I'll try and get a big chunk (i think that's the correct term?) of venison if everyone partakes in Bambi?

oops sorry! I'm using my iPhone and it's really crap for viewing threads, I can't even tell which post is 126, I have pm'd Southey anyway, hope that's all ok, do I need to put my name down elsewhere too?
How many Hampshire meet threads do we need since this one has already been started:
http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=87052
There aren't really any limits, BUT we do tend to open a specific thread for a location, it just keeps it tidy in the thread itself:)
erm... the one Southey has linked to has an actual location where people can actually decide if they want to actually want to walk the 500m to, totally different to a date with no location.
It's the same dates since its same meet and i would of thought location TBC would be understood since no location was picked at the time of posting :banghead:
Nevermind i'll tranfer names from the original thread to keep it all tidy.
I have spare bungees and paracord if you would like to borrow them for the trip.
Yes Please.
I have Bivi bag and tarp but never used them as yet so will be good to finally use the kit.
Thats cool Grendel, If you think, something to sleep on, to sleep in, to sleep under, clothes to be cool when active, warm when not and dry if raining, a couple of water bottles to keep at your basha, food and a means to cook it,
if you cover those bits anything else is a nice to extra,
Have fun packing dude, if you need a roll mat let me know,
this is all about meeting chaps, sharing skills and chilling out, comfort only costs Lbs
Im off for a week in the woods,:D
Looking forward to it. Got Army sleeping bag and roll matt bivibag, Tarp, just need to work out if i need a smaller camping stove and what to bring for food.

I know we have somewhere sorted for this meet but below is the reply that I received from the Basingstoke site.
"Hi Ross
Sorry for the delay. Standard cost is £12.50 per night for adults only, and a family rate of £10 for adults and £5 per child. Let me know
Thanks
John"
Looks like they have increased their prices. I did mention that there could be 10 of us going but there was no mention of a group discount.

Hmm I prefur the idea of a proper campsite with facilitys but at £12 per person per night and Southys place with no mod cons is £10 the whole weekend.
Although still getting concerns about crapping in a hole without a flush attached. LOL
