Hello everyone , just a couple of things , i felt i ought to mention . The powers that be cant name them for libel purposes , have in their wisdom , noted quad activity across the moor , when not being relevant to checking stock , collecting stone for wall damage etc. "i dont have any stock , and bushcrafters dont count ! " So not just for those reasons , and i get dizzy going up and down lots ! impact on the land /site and because bushcrafting is supposed to be minimal and because i think i have most heavy items on site , i will be making every effort to keep quad trips to a minimum . On a positive note , including myself there will be three sherpas , willing and able to assist . So with that in mind please come light !! Right this is a Freddyfish idea , an inventory . So here goes,

Loads of various sized cooking/frying pots and pans
1 x dutch oven
1 x tripod (but loads of metal stakes to fashion your own)
2 x 13ft patrol tents
2x3 man tents
2x2 man tents
10 fire grills of different size
2x elsan toilets ( 1 in tent )
spades , axes. rope , paracord, etc.
wheelbarrows, folding tables , lockable storage, first aid posts, fire pits etc.
even duvets , pillows for the less back to nature types !
cooking utensils and stuff i have forgot !

Any question/queries etc please ask .

Thankyou for being understanding

atb Ivan...

PS Jon dont worry about your circus tent we will sort it friend !

ex member mick sturbs

Sorry to keep on !! But iwas planning lamb under ground again , as i feel it went well , any other suggestions welcome .I also have 1x travel hammock and 3x3 tarp spare , and of course the big patrol tent ,for cooking/preparing /storing etc. also i have a huge 55 feet long tarp (was once a yurt cover ) if anybody wants to do something with, and for those of you who have not been , its not the Butlins you are dreading !! there is plenty of space to take yourself off and be alone..

FreddyFish
13-04-2011, 18:54
Thanks for that list Ivan.

I would suggest that if there is anything that someone needs exclusive use of, that you should book it with Ivan.
Just so 5 people don't turn up all wanting a two man tent.

jonajuna
13-04-2011, 19:23
PS Jon dont worry about your circus tent we will sort it friend !

LOL, cheers, we have a plan anyway, well 4 actually! :)

its going to be a bit warmer (and hopefully dry) so......

plan 1: split the bell tent down into managable packs, i can carry the main canvas if it also doesnt include the poles, pegs and ground sheet.

plan 2: sell our bigger tent and buy a couple of 3 man geodomes (whether we achieve this in time, dont know)

plan 3: bring our nylon teepee instead of bell tent

plan 4: it may just be me in which case all the other plans are null and void!

failing all that, theres the back up plan.......... make the kids carry it all, they are young and fit whereas i am old and cronky ;)

Think i promised this to someone at the last meet ...

Beech wood fires burn bright and clear
if the logs are kept for a year ,
store your beech from christmas tide,
with new cut holly laid beside,
chestnuts only good they say,
if for years tis stored away,
birh and firwood burn too fast,
blaze too bright and do not last,
flames from larch will shoot up high'
dangerously the sparks will fly,
but ash wood green and ash wood brown,
are fit for queen with a golden crown,
oaken logs if dry and old,
keep away the winters cold,
poplar gives a bitter smoke,
fills your eyes and makes you choke,
elm wood burns like church yard mould,
and the flames are vey cold,
hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread,
so it is in ireland said,
apple wood will scent the room,
pear wood smells like flowers in bloom,
but ash wood wet and ash wood dry,
a king may warm his slippers by .

dont know who wrote it but bleddy good ! Ivan ...

Just a thought . On the Sat , was planning a bimble , and boring history lesson across the moor , starting from base camp, down to Chalk Ford ( borders a wild deer farm ,good chance of seeing magnificent red stag ! ) then on to Huntingdon Warren ( old rabbit farm, enclosures, only mature tree for miles, farmhouse ruins etc ) on to Avon dam ( man made 1964 quite impressive ) back to Pupers Hill ( tor used by 10 tors 45 mile route, and where people place stones ) finally home , probably about 7 miles ( i will get savagebushcraft to work it out !! ) and then home if any body is interested ..

( by the way thanks for Katies myface request or whatever it is )

After much deliberation, re not every one wanting a route march /kids/steep ground hard terrain and to keep it interesting, we wont go to Chalk Ford as it is a very steep climb back up . So it will be Pupers Hill to Huntingdon Warren to Keble Martins Chapel to Huntingdon Cross to Avon Dam and the home ! about six miles in total , with stops and me talking rubbish sorry i mean being interesting 2 - 3 hours , lots of shaven well used paths and a bit more testing going , dont worry no bogs ! better brush up my history because i know you will have questions , i feel a bit of poetic license coming on . Special thanks to Adam for helping to plan , and he is coming down 20th to camp and we will be doing a practice run , so it all goes swimmingly !!

Here is a rough route for the short walk Ivan is kindly taking us on, well the ones who want to of course. I'm sure he won't drag you up there, kicking and screaming, if you don't want to go LOL.

As I said, it's rough at the moment. Accuracy isn't up to HM standards at the minute, but it gives you a rough idea of things/locations/terrain

Well the last meet was my first and i did not quite know what to expect , new to bushcrafting too ! but , you will surely make new friends , they are a great bunch of people , sharing knowledge and skills is magic , and you can be as involved as you like , dont honestly know if we will laugh quite as much , but i am sure it will be fun . One of the most refreshing things is, regardless of background/kit/knowledge/skills etc , someone is always prepared to show you how its done . And its testament to the aforementioned things that another meet has been organised so quickly , and so many of the folks that came on the first one put their names down a bit sharpish!! I will have a cap on numbers , dont want it to be too big , so if you are pondering , put your name down , we dont bite ! i didnt even hear anybody growl !! best wishes Ivan ...

Hello everyone ! what a busy week , Savagebushcraft, (aka Adam ) has been down for the week helping plan the walk , what a lovely route we have picked for those wanting to tag along , plent of interesting sites , and tors etc , just brushing up on my history , for the questions some will ask , please be gentle with me ! So we hve camped continuosly since last Weds ! glorious weather nothing to do with it of course ! We even took time out to visit the Cornwall RV , which was cut short due to our grey water treatment pump failing , still thats life , Adam took some stunning shots which he will post , so you lot have an idea of what you are in for , also some silly ones ! Just a gentle reminder that i an reluctant to use the quad , as i can see the impact on the land , also there is a new way in to the site , much prettier and less taxing , details of which i will post nearer the time . Anyway enough of my old whittering , hope everybody is well and still up for the "revenge"

best wishes Ivan...

just got back in, checked my mail, sorted...some...stuff (lol) but will get a little rest from the 4 1/2 hours of bank holiday traffic, then get those pics uploaded to photobucket, and post the link up for you all. Maybe some of the besy ones as thread images just in case you don't want to thumb through the rest. All should be well worth a look if you get time though. speak to you soon.

I didn't have much success, but then it was rather overcast or under tree canopy for a proper test.

I heard most of those devices needed perfect conditions to supply even a minimum of power, and after all, it's normally in conditions like that, when you need the juice. Besides, gives us a good excuse not to answer the phone to anyone LOL

jonajuna
11-05-2011, 19:16
solar is great and doesnt need much in way of direct sunlight.... however current cells are not that effieicnet so you need a BIG area of them

this is where the pocket cell type chargers fall down, not enough area to capture enough light

you can get caravan/boat flexible panels that are much more useful, though you then need the regulator and battery to go with it

give it 5 years and pocket photovoltaics will be useful for phones/gps/laptops etc

as for new toys to bring, sadly i have one less toy now, seems i have lost my leatherman charge ti when deconstructing a party with a hangover :( damn...... anyone have friends int he states that would pick me one up and mail it to me as a "gift"? i can find them over there for under £80 but none of them will deliver here, those that will charge more and then with postage and customs i dont save enough to offset the risk and delay..... so in the meantime i have to cope with my mora and a sak :( i really really need my knife, saw, file, scissors, pliers etc and those 'shiny' titanium scales :)

edit: ignore my previous crying about my leatherman, my darling wife has just bought me a new one as an early combo fathersday/summer birthday present :D

went for the local option at £99 delivered from planetgizmo :)

Hello Dartmoor attendees!

Just wondering if anyone is going to go past Newton Abbot train station on Friday and leaving Sunday?

Turns out I have to take the train now as the wife is working.
Looks like the train arrives at 2pm on Friday and leaves at 12:30 on Sunday.

Anyone passing through? I'll sort out fuel costs the generous person!

yes, they want to go on a day trip! (how nice it is that " something different" is what is normally the tourist traps" :) )

I think it's planned for the saturday at the moment mate. It's only a 3 hour bimble, giving around 10 minutes wander round each stop, but could be a little longer, as Ivan and I tend to walk at a decent pace out there. We did try to take it steady to get an accurate time though.

Hello Everybody , well just a week to go ! Anyone lurking in the wings who wants to come along and try , dont be shy put your name down , we are all a really friendly bunch and it doesn't matter if its your first time , nobody has to do the three days , just come along for the day to see what its all about , free of course , and for anybody thinking big gatherings are not for me , i have plenty of space and secret hideaway spots if you want to be on your own .Also the walk and other bits and pieces are not compulsory , you can hang around camp, or do your own thing . For those that have been before just park in the usual spot and make your way up to the site ( its changed a bit , sorry improved ) Also those who need directions or tel . nos. just shout on here .Well thats about it , so really looking forward to seeing you all and meeting new faces.

Brilliant news!! my friends Roger and his partner , are coming up to net and ring some birds (both members of the BTO) so anyone interested is more than welcome to see how its done , see some wild birds close up ! we also have 50 nest boxes dotted all around our land , lots which are inhabited at the moment ...

Me and Mrs Fish (aka Sarah) can't make it on Friday but will be there Saturday morning.

So if anyone wanted a tour of the glamping option you could do that on Friday.

aha! was just about to write "bridge construction, what you on about" then i remembered :P

not at all, though i have long enough legs to not need bridges (although did fall in twice myself) i am still more than happy (will enjoy in fact) constructing bridges, loos and anything else that is needed/wanted/desired/fun.

will aim to be there by 7pm, if early will sit and wait for the company on the journey :)

Hi Joel, nice kit, " keep it simple son , keep it simple " ( Del Boy , i do believe ) in answer to your questions, yes there is a group meal on the Saturday after the walk , which consists of marinated legs of lamb , ( hangi ) cooked in a ground oven slowly on hot stones , its delicious ! and a huge pot of veg , also a huge beef casserole ( courtesy of Badger and Foxy , well Foxy really !) Its lovely . also i have all manner of pots and pans etc . so the use of a frying pan , is no bother. Nic to see you organised and looking forward to it ! Ivan...

After having most of our gear already there i can't understand how we're filling a 35litre rucksack with food for 2 days, but i have to leave these kind of things to those in the know ( 1. a woman 2. a woman who has 2 mouths to feed which include a teenager and a husband 3. knowing that husband keeps saying ' oooh we should get some of them ' and thus buying it, then packing it....)

I had a great time, it was nice to put faces to names, and very instructional, seeing Badger build that table (or was it a footstool in the end?), the Fire bow demonstration, and Ivan's scatological skills on the Moors. There were other things but it would take to long to list ( and not be family appropriate, you know what I mean Ivan). I hope to attend the next one in the near future. :)

I had a great time - was a real shame about the weather though :(
The amusing thing was, as soon as we hit the M25 the sun came out and the temperature rose a good few degrees!
Managed to get some of the kit dry when we got home (4 hour trip via motorway, instead of the 6-7 hours it took us to get there!)

Hi everybody, Well as you all know me by now this little story , of show and tell, will have to be done in instalments, and maybe recorded for training and security purposes.
First of all thanks for coming new and old , and putting up with some inclement Dartmoor weather , i am going to get the negatives out of the way first .
The weather
The uncompleted walk
The topless sunbathing
The No pimms O'clock
( All due to the weather! )
Now thats done the positives, it was amazing to have some virgins ! I wont name them ( although i am not sure about the French birds ) A big thankyou to Roger and Helen (BTO ) For showing us all some special birds ! sure there are photos to follow . To Andy Bruce for sharing skills and being all round bushcrafty . Adam for living in the woods since Christmas ! to help with preparation , Badger and Foxy for continuing support and help ( oh and the stew) Lord Fish for help with the computerey things and organisation, Lady Fish for coming and being lovely . End of part one .

Back to characters, Paul Newman , for winning longest traveller and being great company ( Lancashire ! ) Joel for laughing at my jokes and letting me have a go on his peace pipe ( nothing sinister ) Dave 53 for making it down when he could have so easily not bothered , and of course making Katie a lovely wild cherry walking stick with inset button compass.

Which brings me on to why i was a little subdued on Sun , the Dorset contingent , Bushwhacker and his opposite number Damien , and of course that evil stuff they always bring, and out of politeness , i feel i must drink ! Gets me every time. Nice to see you boys , good banter

Part 4, which brings us nicely on to our unexpected guests, For those not in the know my site is a little remote , and i have never met anyone there that was not invited, which i was explaining to the group , we spotted 2 girls and 2 boys ambling gently past ! Totally lost , turns out a Belgian and 3 French , who had got a little lost shall we say , the mist was rolling in and it was getting late , they also looked a bit tired and wet.
That coupled with the where they where heading, was lets say ambitious! So i did the decent thing and told them to " get orf my laand ! "No i invited them down explained their pridicament , showed them a pitch got them warm , dry and , really drunk ! International relations and all . i think they enjoyed themselves . Dont think they will forget that visit to Dartmoor...

I cant remember too much due to the Dorset Rohypnol, but i remember the great people i have met on such a great weekend. Being a newbie to Dartmoor I was made to feel more than welcome by everyone and being a Londoner was not held against me, at least not much but had Pinky and Nova as back up. Andy Bruce is a star with all his knowledge and skills. I would like to thank Adam, Badger, Foxy (sorry the Chocolate Damper Bread was over cooked, next time, Tommy ( your a great Kid with a lot of inspiration ), Dusty for just being there, Paul, Joel Bernie, Dave, John, Katie, Bazzworks and Yvette, Kard133, and of course the foreign legion who will be scarred forever and will think the English drink Cider from little teapots.lol.
But most of all would like to thank Ivan for without you sir the weekend would not have happened. you have a great site with great people working with you and I know this will be a fantastic place for people of all skills to come together in the idea you have designed the site for. I only hope that you will allow me to attend at the next meet as I would appreciate coming back.

On the plus side, we took the motorway home and managed to get back in a record-breaking 4 hours this time (as opposed to the 6 and a half it took us to get there!) :D
Pinky, who never usually stays in bed for long, thoroughly enjoyed the time out on Saturday, and I'm busy finishing up my Dartmoor II teaspoon - making more of a mess in the computer room!
Next time he wants to do much more in the way of swing building, and I want to do better in terms of not being eaten alive by midges! - I've come home with 11 bites over my face and right wrist...

Wish I could have made it this time Ivan but I just started a new job. Will be there soon. Glad to hear that everyone had a great time. And hello to everyone.

We missed you James. Ivan even said to the others, how much of a decent guy you were and it was a shame you couldn't get there.

Nice photos Adam, I have six kids and Katie is the youngest and the only one interested in what i do , you can't keep that girl away from any aspect of bushcraft/wild camping , and i am determined to hang on to that for as long as possible , before the demon teenage thing takes hold !! i consider myself very lucky , that she never moans about dirt/cold/rain/walking/carrying her backpack etc , how long will it last i wonder ? forever hopefully !

Ps the down side is if i buy a new bit of kit , it gets snaffled...
