With a few - 'what wood' posts lately, I've found this useful site

http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/archives/forestry/hough/index.html

It covers:
Transverse
Radial
Tangential sections through lots of woods (American woods/names)

So if you find an unrecognisable log - go here to search, might point you in the right direction.
Use the 600dpi zoom function :p

Woo hoo!

Thanks to venger's wonderful wood site, I now know what my mystery wood is:
<drum roll>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbeam
:D :D

Apparently it's rarely used due to its extreme hardness. :cool: :cool:

They make things like meat tenderizers and piano action hammers out of it. I might have to go back and rob the whole tree... :)

Never thought of Wikipedia for looking up trees. What doesn't that site cover?
