Hi i'd like to come to get some experience but it will be my first bushcraft meetup, previously ive only ever done weekends with friends and done basic stuff.

Are there any rules and reccomendations (i.e no knives, open fires etc),

Chambers
04-02-2011, 21:58
Its the knives and open fires that make it fun.

Nah its pretty much just the usual sensibilites, get yourself along mate you will learn a boat load and its always nice to meet others with the same interests

That's what im on about though, i don't know what the 'usual' sensibilities are. Some threads on this site seem to be very concerned about damaging the environment so using no wood or small amounts of dead wood. Whilst the other 'extreme' is seeing elaborate shelters built with tonnes of wood.

To give u an idea ill list a couple of questions

What options do we have for sleeping, ie tents, hammocks, building shelters with wood, tarp etc

Do we have open fires? if so are there multiple small ones or a single larger one

lannyman also says he will be having the kids with him which leads me to wonder if he is uncomfartable with everyone using knives and axes (or prehaps leaving them out in the open where the kids can get hold of them)

What would probly be best is if someone whom has been on one of these meetups before to list their kit they will bring, which will probly answer most of my questions

Thanks in advance :)

Generally you keep your kit together so sharps that you are using will be one you, others will be in or with your gear but knowing Chris, his kids will be sensible and obviously know about safety etc.

The fire last time was a communal one and then a few were set up a bit closer to shelters.

Last time 2 of us were in hammock and tarp and the other 2 were in poncho/basha shelters, both are suitable but a tent isnt so much. If you dont have sleeping kit just let us know and Im sure between us we could come up with some to lend you for the meet.

As for the wood its dead wood only up here, no cutting down of any tree but there is plenty of standing wood. Natural shelters really would impact the surroundings at this time of year I think just with nothing being in full growth yet.

If you wanted to meet up for a quick wander somewhere either up your way or down here and just go over what few basics I know just let me know. Nothing to worry about at these meets as everyone is really friendly and welcoming

Any other queries just ask matey

Ive got all the kit i need (i think) but thanks for the offer :)

normally i build a-frame shelters so i dont use tents or bashas, ive got plenty tarp i can use though

Raikey

yep ,..same here,...

as for kit,...

warm clothes
something to sleep in/under
something to eat (Chambers set up a dutch oven last time and it went down well if we plan same bring summat for the pot)
something to drink (we carried 3-4 litres water each last time and theres a brook for washing pots)
something to drink (hahahah, i think its my turn for the booze)
a bag to put it all in

we woke up to snow last time but i reckon (probably shouldnt reckon) by march we shouldnt be looking at minus figures.

maybe PM Merrygold (at the top of this thread), he put together a kit last time from not much, and not only managed but made us proud,..

As said tho,...its just a relaxing place and crowd,. you would be more than welcome.

I'll happily bring the pot again so we can get cooking a communal dish again

something to drink (hahahah, i think its my turn for the booze)

Ill also bring some booze but I wont be homebrewing yet. Some more of that strawberry vodka wouldnt go a miss again tho if you got some Chris

i think the water problem is to do with the fact there is an old dump near to the site, this will mean heavy metles and possibly toxins leaching into the water source from that site....

the farm house has a tap which it 10 mins walk and there is also a toilet there..... there are a few rules which i will copy and paste now for all to see..... the site has been booked provisionaly for 10 people by my self...... there are rare breed pork sausages and chops for sale (frozen) from the farm house which is where the toilet and water tap are (10 mins walk)

Information for prospective campers at Brockwell Woods:

If there is space on the date you require, it is helpful to know what time you would arrive. If we are not going to be in, I usually leave maps, spades, saws, rubbish bags, water bottles as required for you to borrow and return outside the front door. I leave an envelope with your map to post your fees through the letterbox.

It is a proper 26 acre wild wood, no toilets or shower blocks - you can get water from the house and there's a WC there too. There are lots of little clearings and places where you can camp throughout the wood so you can just pick your place - the map will help you to find them. If you have a car, you can drive across the fields into the wood and park near to where you will camp, or if you would prefer, park at the house and walk across the fields. It is 10-15 minutes walk across to the wood.

We expect people to leave the wood as they find it - take nothing, leave nothing. You need to bury human waste, burn paper, ESPECIALLY TOILET PAPER, and collect up and bag all rubbish. You can leave this at the house if necessary.

We expect people to behave with consideration for others who are camping, local nearby residents and the environment of the wood.

Please note that we require groups to sign a signing in sheet with names, addresses, phone numbers, car registration where appropriate agreeing to this statement:

“We expect that campers will take responsibility for damage to property and the environment. Signing your name on this list implies that you agree to behave reasonably, with consideration for other campers, local residents, property and the natural environment. We will take appropriate action with the police and through the courts if this is not the case.”

We charge £8 per person per night, £4 per child, under 5s free.

You are welcome to light fires responsibly, clearing up after them. There is plenty of dry wood - fallen and felled trees which can be cut up for firewood. You do not need to fell live trees.

Dogs are fine too if kept under reasonable control.

Please let me have a mobile phone number, address and car registration.

Steph

Here are the instructions to get here by car:

From the Western Bypass (A1 to Hexham) follow signs to A695 Blaydon, or from Scotswood Rd, go across Scotswood Bridge following signs to the A695 to Blaydon and then Prudhoe. At Blaydon roundabout you'll see a MacDonalds. (Don't stop there!) Take the Prudhoe road A695 out of Blaydon, 1st mini roundabout turn left, (not signed). Follow road round until you see a left turn – Herd House Lane, signed to Blaydon Burn. This is the second left off that road. Turn left and follow road to the end then turn left onto Liddels Fell Road. Follow the road down into the dip, There’s a sign Blaydon Burn & 30mph sign. You see a white house, a stone house, Longridge Road, a pylon, then as the road curves sharply to left and up the hill, you’ll see a gap in the stone wall on the right marked Blaydon Burn House. Turn right, bump up the track and you’re there. Look for the conservatory on the left behind the very large holly.

If you miss that turn, take the next one right off Burn Road into Beech House, it’s the other half of Blaydon Burn House and the drive curves round in front of the two houses. It’s also a bit less bumpy.

You can get a 49 bus from Gateshead to Black Lane or a 32 bus from Newcastle Central Station to Winlaton and walk down Burn Road to the Beech House entrance.

The address is

Blaydon Burn House and Farm

Burn Road,

Blaydon on Tyne

Sounds awesome, im definatly in.
If you need any details from me b4 hand just PM me :)

I 'might' be able to borrow a manakin from work if anyone wants to practice cpr, would be a good oppertunity to refresh and show basics to those who dont know it.
Let me know if this sounds interesting

lannyman8

all the info you need should be in the above, as for blades and sharps the kids are age 15 so if they get cut "TOUGH" they should be more careful.....lol.....
no searious, they wont touch your kit at all, or anything else unless i say they can.......

referance your shelter a tarp is fine, the a frame is probably a no no, the wood we can use is dead, it needs to be kept for fire fuel really. any green wood is to be left as is ie no cutting at all, maybe in the summer, you would have to speek to Ike the owner.

if your tarp has no holes to tie cordage to you can just use the stone metheod to secure the cordage, then tie that to the trees/bushes

all booz is welcome, Rich dont forget your coke this time though, SAFETY FIRST mate, the last thing we want is for you to not be able to drink...lol:)
dont know about the vodka Rich, will bring some wine though, maybe some ginger beer if i get round to it...lol:)

i think we may end up in the Birch area this time, if there is more people, that way we can cut the large felled wood for fire fuel, also quite open for teaching and a beverage later on, oh and forgeing if we get round to it, (we could borrow some bricks from that old building for the forge).....

hope this helps....

chris.

A DD camping hammock. Still haven't got it actually, will be picking it up tomorrow if all goes to plan. Stupid post office, I shake my fist in it's general direction! I reckoned that the frontline was twice as dear purely cause of the mossie net so just went with the camping one. I'm sure it's grand. Looking forward to trying it out anyway.

Lamb sounds freaking sweet! I'm salivating onto the keyboard right now, haven't had brekkie yet.

I think the forge should be a definite, as I have to make up for last time. I was just bashing, didn't realise I was supposed to be working towards something, haha. Then the final killer blow :( "Poor Auld Wonky" I call him now. It has a certain ring to it I think.

Having the dogs around should be interesting. If I was on the ground I might be worried I'd wake up smelling of wee. But sure that wouldn't be too abnormal I guess, ha.

I was wondering what does one do with their gear when sleeping in a hammock. I figured that during the day you would just leave it in the hammock, but what about at night? Just leave it under?

With regards to bringing stuff I don't feel like i have much to add to proceedings, perhaps I should just bring some booze?

Looking forward to it,

Mark

Chris....unfortunately the beach trip is off... Andy is under the weather with a nasty kidney problem; I wouldn't wish his couple of bouts with this on anyone - especially him :(
Hopefully he'll be on the mend and we'll get another date for the beach-craft sometime soon. You guys are welcome to get up there; you'll love it.

I'm heading to the Lake District this weekend to pick up some gear I have stashed over there... I'll get some fell running in while I'm there.

Ha, that is probably the most bizarre compliment I have ever received.

Can you give me an example of the sort of "bits and bobs" that you would need often enough to hang up? Other than Rich's "hand sanitiser", what a sicko. Haha.

Mark, you need picking up mate?

That's a very attractive offer Rich, but I wouldn't want you to be going out of your way. Getting me would mean going too far and then turning back on yourself. However, If you are dying to get rid of some petrol, and maybe put a few miles on the clock, then sure:D Actually, pick me up from my place and I'll give a few squids or something. It would save me some time and effort. Yeah?

if we all get there its going to some group.......

Tis a mighty list indeed. I hope all can make it in the end. Think of all the feet there would be to pump the forge. Are the kids under tarps themselves or you gonna snuggle up together as a family, haha. Youngest on the outside of course:)

Does anybody reckon that I would need an underquilt in the middle of march? Bearing in mind that I will have my sleeping mat, and possibly a blanket between the layers. What kind of temperatures are we to expect?

lannyman8
09-02-2011, 19:47

you could rig up your blankets underneath your hammock maybe???????

would it be an idea to sort out who brings what?
it would possibly save on there being 10 shovels (i am a 2 motion a day man myself) needlessly.

i'm making a campfire tripod and trivet on friday so i could bring them?
feel free to add equipment, for example; shiatsu massage chairs or bowls of pot pouri.

There should be a tripod still there which I made last time but by all means bring yours mate. More the better :-p

hiya mate,...i think the fact you see it as an "event" is why your looking for a start and finish time,...

we dont do a roll call,...(Raikey?..here sir!!,...) hahaha

short answer, there are no start and finish times,...

the 19th is a Saturday,...just turn up when suits you,..7am, so you can get a good day in ..or 4 pm so you can get setup before the sun drops,....

then Sunday the 20th get up, have breakfast, and pack up,...or strike camp after lunch and hang around until it gets late,...

its a generally relaxed vibe with no real agenda or concrete itinary,..

i hope this helped,...

Went browsing the charity shops earlier and got a 100% Scottish wool blanket for £2.99. It's a biggy too. Perfect for in my hammock I reckon. I also got a wind-up head torch for under a tenner at Argos. Seems to work pretty well. 1 min winding gives 1 led 90 mins or 3 leds 40 mins. That should save me holding my phone in my mouth while trying to spark a fire, haha. I think all I need now is some paracord and I'll be kitted out.

you jammy bstrd lol i sent my mam out looking in the charity shops everytime she goes down toon.lol

Just taken delivery of an Alpkit Skyehigh 600 and Alpkit Base 120, so I'm well pleased. Unless something incredibly important comes up in the meantime i.e. my arms fall off or a close family member combusts for whatever reason, I'll be there. Is it just the £8 for the camp site or do we need to pay subs too?

What make is it? I have a Highlander which is 8' x 5' and weighs 450g, a DD Tarp which is 10' x 10' and weighs 650g and what I think is a British Army Basha which is about 8' x 5', but weighs a massive 1kg. If you want to try the Highlander or the Brit Basha out for size I can bring them along. I'm going to be using the DD. You may need some paracord though, or some steel rope if you want to try the Brit monster.

dont know what brand it is, it was from the "evil bay" thought it was a better material is all. its like the blue ponud shop ones, the weaved nylon type crap that leaks and splints, i only got it because its 2.7m x 3.5m.....

I know how you feel. Remember I ordered a cheapo tarp to the wrong house? Well I ordered another and it wasn't as expected. Will be using that as an under-hammock though. Ended up going for a DD tarp. It was just handy really. Really looking forward to first time in a hammock.

The weather is still a bit wintery up this way, especially at night. Lots of frost. So I'll have a sleeping bag and mat under me, a wool blanket and throw over me. Does anyone think that'll be enough? Or should I rock out the duvet again, ha.

its a mix of broad leaved and coniferous.

not fully mixed in but in panels of types in places,...

like a section of pine, then the same of birch and beech

quite a lot of hardwood scattered in to,...managed to scavenge a fair bit of fallen oak for cooking on last time,..

its on a west facing hill (only a slight hil) with a brook to the north

there are service cables overhead in parts and so some management is ongoing and even big clearings in parts,....

i also hear there is quite a bad storm of fun moving in too and its due on the 19th and 20th,....with bright spells and a smattering of bucshcraftiness

Hi Guys any chance of tagging on. I was at Waylands first meet and enjoyed it. Been inactive as far as meets go for a few years (due to Circumstances)
Looks like you guys have a good game plan, so would love to come along and maybe contribute.

and if not theres always a cuddle eh??

Hahaha, well since you're on the ground. Don't know if the hammock would hold both of us :D

(boots optional)

I reckon boots should be mandatory for health and safety reasons.

forge is a "GO GO GO"........

Sweet! Should I bring my mini vice grips? I think it would hold better than that pliers of yours. Or do you have something else?

What is a Softy 6?

everyone welcome to tag along......

i started in the cadets so ye they count....lol...

sure bring them along mate, my softy 6 is a sleeping bag, very small and quite warm considerong the size/thickness, i used to use just that with the bivvi when on exercise, was a bit chilly though....:)

Hi all have just been preparing for the meet by making and modifying a few items..
Firstly i was in a builders merchants and picked up 20m of 65kg tension green rope, i learned from my previous exploits thats you need
some kind of device to wrap it around or knots will drive you crazy! so i came up with a spline of pine and wrapped in in my favourite material....black electrical tape.

i then realised my blade looked a bit tatty so i gave it a good sharpen freeand with my lanksy stones and re-covered the handle in duct tape then electrical tape with a new
lanyard for safety and to lock it in the sheath. On a bit of a roll by now i remembered a engraver in the garage so i got some fresh batteries in it and put my name on everything, turboflame, crux set, blade, my titanium watch even my needle nose pliers lol... while doing my name on the bushman knife i noticed how dull it looked and decided it needed a kiss of humour. I looked around the internet a while until i came across a image of an A10 thunderbolt jet.. I like the nose cone design so copied onto the nose of my blade.. a bit silly i know but i like it especially when ive got it used as a spear.. badass..

Just remember..."each to there own" before slagging me off boys!!!

Also pic of the tomahawk im bringing, its a cold steel frontier hawk
