Been a while since I did a tracking cold case, so here is a new one. As usual, what species left this?

No one has it yet. You have to state the exact species. just calling 'owl' isn't gonna cut it :nono:

Owl pellets aren't faeces, they are the regurgitated undigested fur and bones. Owls eat their prey whole most of the time, so it is well worth dissecting them to see what species they have eaten. They are pretty distinctive from each other, as other bird pellets are, and you can easily tell the species from prey items in the pellet.

Still, no one has this correct. I may get a picture of the insides to shine more light on it.

That is actually a good guess as there are plenty of Kingfishers here. Too big though, and I've only ever found one pellet from a Kingfisher.

My folks just told me on the phone they've fished 15 dead ones out of there pond as the ice did them all in. So I'm guessing plenty more met the same end.

Yeah, quite a few are perishing and floating to the surface. Magpies will be the first at the scene.

Was the pic taken this January, Jonathan, as there is what appears to be a dead moth in the second photo. Possibly just leaf litter. There also appear to be seeds.

I've seen ferrets bringing up pellets/fur-balls. Could it have been one of their smaller cousins... stoat or weasel?

JonathanD
14-02-2011, 22:15
It was taken in January... date stamped, bottom right. No moth in there. It was magpie ^^^ see above posts^^^
