View Full Version : Ayrshire D&G meet confirmed

We need a meet in Ayrshire or nearby and i've started this for a discussion/census of opinion on a venue.
Suggestions so far are Glentrool, old Caldons camp site.
Loch Doon.
Loch Doon sounds good to me or what about Eglinton Park Tam, should be reasonably quiet this time of year.
Eglington is right along the road from me and fairly easy travel, if its further afield like forest of galloway can i ask for a lift from someone passing Irvine? More than happy to share fuel costs.
Tom

Both sound good Tam
Nathan
Yip, up for this, dates? For me, near pub transport link would be good or I'll be needing a lift (will share costs etc.).

No problem with a lift Tom I'm in Sunny Saltcoats so will be passing you no matter where we go.
Where's Caldon camp site it's a new one on me , never heard of it so that might be interesting, car parking? Dates should be ok hopefully.
Thats brilliant Sniper, thanks very much.
Unfortunatley i'm not allowed to drive through medical reasons.
I've been down to the forrest of galloway with friends before and the glen trool area is lovely, infact thats the first place i ever had a quick shot of a hammock!

John,Caldons was the campsite at Glentrool.
Count me in for this aswell.
cheers!
Caldon's sounds good too Tam, just looked it up, so, if I can get the car close terrific, but anywhere is good for me.
I'll maybe give Eglinton a call to see availability and costs and if they would lay on another of their ranger walks/talks on flora & fauna if anybody is interested in that venue.
has anyone got any other suggestions for places?
Leadhills [mennock pass], loch doon , croy shore, loch ken ,
There is another ex forestry commission campsite up by Murrays Monument on the road to Clatteringshaws and New Galloway which is similar to Caldons Campsite.

I'm excited now :-)

Ok executive decision made...
Location will be Caldons site at Glentrool.
Now to decide which dates..
March 18-20 or 25-27 ?
Usual caveats (work) Tam but either for me mate. May even bring a buddy who wants to try this camping malarky out.
Either dates should be fine for me
Wud prefer 18-20 as i have a doo the other weekend. al keep an eye tae see whats decided.

Don't anyone be put off, there is plenty space at this site to get peace and quiet.
If things are fine here at home (elderly relations aren't keeping well, it's Son2's birthday that weekend too) I'd like to come by at least for a long day visit.

Should be down with the family but don't worry i will keep them under control , don't want them keeping anyone up late .
Craig.................
I was wondering is there any water nearby for canoeing , or is it a dry meet ?
Craig..............
Yes it is right on the banks of loch Trool which is owned by Lord Granchester. Never seen anyone brave enough to face the wrath of the estate manager by launching despite the outdoor access code :-)
As long as you are not fishing or causing damage not sure much can be done. Failing that the river Minnoch flows right through the camp, but it is a spate river with lots of White water.
Might bring mine along then.
Nathan
Just had a look at song of the paddle the loch ok to paddle on

It's not hard to find.
A714 Girvan to Newton Stewart road, approx 8miles before NStewart turn off at Bargrennan 1/2 mile to a right turn for L Trool then about 2 miles.
Or Turn off at A77 after Ayr at Minishant or Maybole, head to Straiton and straight through to same location.
I'll try and put a marker sign at the right turn into camp area.
Cool, as clear as mud.. or perhaps double Dutch

well the dissertation will be in that week, so I may well be up for a weekend away. Bit of a distance for me though.
I'll certainly have a think.
can we bring some kit to sell? - got a load of carving knives I want to off load.
Andy
Some quick history of the site. Caldons used to be a Forestry Commission owned campsite for caravans and tents and provided very basic amenities such as an electric hookup, water and a toilet block - it was fantastic. It closed around 10 years ago, the toilet block has been levelled, the electric hookups are long gone and the water supply is no more.
However there is a vast amount of level grassy pitches (although the grass is knee height!) There is also a lot of mixed broadleaf woodland, two rivers running through the campsite and a loch adjacent.
I would guess that the site is around 30 acres - there is a house on the site which was lived in by the campsite manager, the house has not been lived in for 10 years, although it was recently sold by the Forestry, not sure whether someone is now living there or whether it is still being refurbished - it needed a lot of work.
The path for the Southern Upland Way goes right through the campsite, also the site is used by lots or ramblers and dogwalkers.
There is parking right next to the site, although a locked gate prevents direct vehicular access.
I would suggest that the best place to camp (out of the way of the main walking traffic) is to go through the gate and over the bridge, follow the tarmac path, don't go left to the information sign go straight on, the path will then branch off to the left as well as going straight on, go straight on and look to your right - there is a decent sized level field, surrounded by trees on two sides and is tucked out the way from passing foot traffic?
There is a house on the site

Just thinkin' ( a rare event granted ) that since there may be a few of us there, can we think of things perhaps to skill share? Would be quite good to see what folks can pass on, as with all things even if it's fairly basic kowledge there going to be people that don't know something...?
i would be inetested in skillsharing although i would only be on the learning side as i've not much to share. if someone could bring along sharpening utensils that would be great cause no matter how hard i try i cant get my knife sharp......i get it kinda sharp then blunt it for some reason.

I think we're having a communal stew as we do, as main meal, Jason is bringing some beef i think so any other meats, game, offal and vegetables won't go wrong.
Breakfasts and snacks as usual, d.i.y, unless again as usual there's a glut and we just feed of each others makings.:camping:

I could do with some guidance on any of the following over the weekend if anyone is able to shed some light on it?
Fire bow and drill making - I can make the components, but I don't seem to be using the correct wood combination, because it doesn't work
Tree identification - I find this impossible in winter when there are no leaves (I'm not great with it in the summer either)
Wild foods or useful wild resources (like sphagnum moss for it's anaesthetic properties or for cleaning pans or it's ability to soak up water)
Useful knots (I can do prussic and siberian hitch)
Good tarp configurations
I could do with some guidance on any of the following over the weekend if anyone is able to shed some light on it?

Went down for a recce today.
All is good to go, no-ones been near the old house.
I'm going to put the 'chute for the communal area near the car park.
There are ample places for your tents, hammocks or bivis.
I've sussed two put ins for canoes but they involve a portage of c. 300m each from the car park.
You could put in the river but theirs a wee weir, only 6" at most near the loch and some gravel beds.
Two carrying the craft and there'll be no probs'.
Watched Raven,Jay,Nuthatch and G.S Woodpecker along with usual other birds.
In a couple of months Wood Warbler, Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Pied Flycatcher will be in the woods.
Always keep an eye overhead as Golden Eagle can be seen (if your lucky).
I have, often.
There are ample walking and mountain biking routes and plenty places to chill out on your own.

Everyone know where they're going?
From Glentrool village turn at signposts for Bruces Stone.
2/3 mile to visitors centre/car park, from there continue c. 1 1/2 miles and you will see a sign for Start of Loch Trool trail, turn right here and 2/10 of a mile brings you to car park where we're going to be.
Easy peasy.

They still breed in the area and cover many square miles on their wanderings.
I saw one fly over last year south to north while I was in Caldons wood, only takes them seconds to cross the valley.
I'm unable to divulge anything other than general info about them.

You're needing to get your priorities right.:lmao:
You haven't been to a meet in yonks.
Tell me about it Tam, I had been approached to do this presentation about a month ago but when I didn't hear anything I thought it was a no go, but a wee birdie gave me a heads up last week that it might be happening, but I only got firm confirmation this morning. By my reckoning that tells me they knew this was happening some time ago but have left it to the last minute to tell me. AAAaaaaaaaarrrrggghh! :aargh4:
Ok rant over, :nofeed:I know it's important but still a little more warning would not have went amiss, especially when I had made other plans. It does and has made me absolutely determined to make the Comriecroft meet a must and no one will stop me making that one. I've told them at work no matter what the crisis I'm off for it. All that's needed now is a firm date and I'll put in holidays for it. :bigok: I love my job.
You can always stop for a cuppa on the way home mate. Shame you can't make it it bud but we'll hopefully see you at Comriecorft
Take care
Dave
i wont arrive till late , as i don't finish work till 5 ... keep the beers cauld

If anyone knows how to make nets, and cordage, methinks that be quite handy.
