so folk i have a hankering for a wax jacket and have seen this gem http://www.bisonbushcraft.co.uk/page27/page27.html seventh item down
i was wondering if anyone has one or had one and moved it on and why?
i have to justify all expenses now so cant really afford to buy one on a whim all input greatly recieved
Not got one, but would like one. I purchased the sass smock earlier this year, and have never worn it, so can't justify, even to myself getting one, but..
i quite like the look of the first thing, the shirt.
also a merino wool buff. awesome.

You'll def' need the ventilation zip if active whilst wearing.
I don't have that cag but one with same design that i waterproofed.
It certainly affected the breathability.
It's an 'Outdoor Design' model that cost no more than £15 iirc.
Had it for years and can't seem to damage it in any way.
On another note, I have a merino buff and they are awesome!

No, I don't have one, but I do have one of their 'Guide Shirts', top gear and well made. I also have an unlined lightweight hooded Barbour waxed jacket which I use out in the forest, it works well and I suppose the Cag may work just as well.

I wear a wax jacket all weekend and recon barn owl is right, that could get abit clammy after a while, when it gets cold waxed cotton is bloody freezing, why dont you look on ebay, there are some seriously good virtaully split new barbours for that money, to me that would be a far better use of your hard earned.
I always fancied one of those bush shirts though, shame the neck is so low.

You can pick up waxed jackets second hand for much less. They keep the water out and are as tough as old boots, but they don't breathe so if its warm or if you're doing any kind of activity, they get clammy. Also in cold weather they feel very cold to the touch so a warm woolly underneath serves well.

Ach, if it's spare cash, go for it.
If it doesn't suit, there's bound to be someone who'd want it.
I don't think the drizabone one is made anymore.
But if anyone wants drizabone coats, try hartings.co.nz i have purchased 2 coats from them, good prices & prompt delivery.

Avoid waxed cotton it's terrible. :pokenest:
It's too hot and clammy when its warm and freezes solid ( well certainly stiffens up) when it's cold. It stains other clothing and car upholstery too!
Frankly, waxed cotton jackets fall into the; " Emperors New Clothes" slot in my opinion and don't even get me started on waxed cotton hats!
If you want a jacket like the one in the photo, just buy an SAS smock or similar and treat it with one of the Nikwax products.
Waxed cotton! Oohh... Wailey! Wailey! Wailey!:(
No seriously; waxed cotton is hugely over-rated, for general outdoor applications.

It depends what outdoor activities you're doing.
I have a SASS jacket and it is great for general use and for coping with slight to moderate rain, particularly when on the move or doing something that builds up a bit of a sweat.
BUT, if you're in a downpour and are quite static, waxed cotton's waterproofness becomes more important than its lack of breathability imho.

I'd rather use something like a £10-£15 German army surplus, parka for my anti spark layer:)

a bottle of Nikwax and your set;)
Treadlightly's right; it is horses for courses but waxed cotton has too many drawbacks for my liking.
