View Full Version : North wood february 25-27 to coincide with the outdoor leasure show
woodspirits

hi all, as per title this meet is over the same weekend as the http://www.outdoorleisureshow.com/ at the NEC which is 15 minutes away. courtesy of the organisers i have 2 free tickets to give away at the meet!
weather permitting we will be at the south (bigger) end of the wood at this meet. we had hoped to do some felling at the december meet but the snow put paid to that!, its still an ongoing project weather allowing. if there is still a severe frost, be prepared for the toilet block to be out of use.
important ammendment see post 265
ok as before, just a reminder of terms and directions.
im sure i shouldnt have to mention good housekeeping to you, but im going to anyway. :(
were here on trial so it really is a case of leaving no junk / firescars etc. the only thing we should leave is a good impression, take your rubbish home, there are no facilitys to leave it on the farm. this is a private site, a farmer who i know and who has trusted me. im going to be blunt here, anyone who jeopardises this goodwill will be asked to leave. individual fires are allowed off the ground, there is plenty of windfall and some dead standing (usual precautions apply) live wood is to be left untouched. under 18s to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, guests or minors will be the responsibility of the person who bought them, a small section on the approach to north wood is sssi, unless otherwise instructed this will be marked and out of bounds, as will a small area adjacent to it which is personal to the farmer. the gate from the farm into the meadow must be kept closed at all times, if you open it you close it, ok happy head back on! :)
fees are a reasonable £4 per head per night, pay on arrival access is on friday from 1200, unless we have made prior arrangements to get in earlier. for security reasons the electronic gates will be closed overnight and all day sunday, codes will be given out nearer the meet, possible late arrivals pm me for my tel' number. we will aim to vacate site no later than 1400.
location is opposite the belfry golf club on the A4091, OS map ref' SP189962 for those arriving early there is a large layby opposite the entrance, full address is;
Middleton House Farm
Tamworth Road
Middleton,
Tamworth
North warwickshire
B78 2BD
the fields on the approach to the wood are sometimes hired out to a private company. if on arrival there is any activity on the meadow between the car park and the wood, and you need to unload your vehicle, keep to the track, proceed with caution with hazards on at 15mph. and finally for those not familiar with north wood, this may help...

well thats it for now, any questions just sing out :)

OK. Just been out for my second attempt at hanging and getting in my hammock. All went well except for the coldness underneath me. Do any of you going to the meet have an underblanket you'd like to swap/sell? If not, any bargains to be had out there? Been looking at the Snugpak one but 75 quid is a bit steep. Does anyone know the pack size of the Snugpack also? I'm sure that ths has been answered somewhere on the forum but i wanted to try you lot first.

hiya simon, not sure which hammock you have but you could try a cut down roll mat or a self inflating mat both can go inside or between the hammock layers. unsponsored does an exellent underblanket i had a 3/4 one off him for my hennessy, or you could even mod/hang a cheap square sleeping bag underneath?

I bought a Snugpack underblanket last year and they are a fantastic item of kit. I know they are a lot of shells but it made a lot of difference to the comfort of hammocking. Before I slept in an artic bag with a cheap thermarest in the sleeve of the hammock but was still cold.
The issue with hammocks are that the skin of the hammock compresses your sleeping back on 3 sides so you do tend to feel it on your back. You can help with a blanket over the top of you or back any extra clothes inside the hammock but to kill the problem dead an underblanket is the way to go.
The snugpack ones pack down well at a guess I would say to the same size as a 2 season bag.
Snarf and his Mrs camped out in December without one but I wouldn't.
Don't worry to much about setting up the hammock. There will be enough people there to help, mock and generally take the p1ss if you struggle.

Well done mate.
It's a great item of kit well worth the money.
Set up is a bit fiddly first time but after that it's a piece of cake.

quick question, it the travel hammock any good used as a bivi?
From the DD site
Features include two waterproof base layers so if needed (no trees) it can be set up on the ground as a basic bivi/tent, see pictures.

Not as a bivi as you have not top protection, but for ground dwelling it does work.

well im glad i won't be the only one trying to figure out my underblanket :)
i haven't got a license steve but i have used chainsaws in the past. i'm happy to help and should be there mid-dayish fri if you want another pair of hands.
and on a different note, i've just got back from a solo overnighter in my new spot, last one in my tent hopefully, and wanted to ask about deer noises. i got woken up around 2 by what sounded a little bit like a cow mooing but not really, more a one note honk for about 3 seconds, really loud. it went on for about 20 minutes and seemed to be a call and answer. there's loads of fallow deer in the forest and i was wondering if they make this sort of noise??? or was it the ghosties :p
woodspirits

hiya simon, an extra pair of hands will be welcome :) sounds like location calls of deer, plenty of info on utube if you want to i.d it. i recall being woken in the middle of the night half way up a mountain in scotland by unearthly roaring only to realise it was a red deer stag, unnerving at the time!
just been on youtube, it was definitely deer calling. wasnt actually that unnerved to my own surprise, i almost immediately assumed it was deer but i couldn't sleep til yhey'd stopped, bloody loud! the only time i was a little unnerved was when i had a play with my night vision and couldnt help thinking of blair witch :)
i also tried out my special 6 shirt i got off martin at the dec meet without any other layers and it was amazing! just swapped it for a long sleeve thermal at bedtime and used it as a pillow. my new favourite bit of kit!

i think the dec' meet temperature was a bit exeptional! hopefully it wont be that cold, but there is another wintry snap on the way... believe me, waking to a stag roaring 20mtrs away is a bit different to a grunting doe!
might be worth bringing your n.v to the meet, i used mine to try and see the badgers but i think we were too close to the sett.

Had a play around with the UB this afternoon. It seemed to work well, so looking forward to the opportunity to spend a night in it. Also refining the rigging with some expert help! Didn't do anything with the tabs along the side. Couldnt see how they might be used to be honest.
Had my daughter in tow. She loves the hammock too, but I think I'm gonna be pulling Skips crumbs out of it for the next few weeks to come! ;)
Aiming to get down there around lunchtime on the friday. Would love to muck in with any woodland maintenance that might be going on. never used a chain saw before but more than happy carting logs around if help is needed. :)

with regard to the deer/stag calling i wasn't questioning your testicular fortitude steve :p it definitely wasn't a stag i heard, had a look at a good few vids on youtube and it seems like it was does'.

I've used a couple of mini karabinas to hook it up to my ridge line at the moment, but am gonna bring some bits and pieces and have a play around with it in February to find what works best. I've still not perfected the general hammock set-up to my complete satisfaction yet. I keep refining and changing things as I read advice on BCUK. Haha. ;)
I'm hoping to get a dutch oven before the weekend to try out a stew recipe.
Steve - I fully appreciate this is a 'leave no trace' meet (to my mind there shouldn't be any other kind anyway!) so can you be a little more specific about the fire situation please? Will there be a way to get a stew on the go do you think, or is it a little more sensitive than that?
Cheers,
Chris

hi chris, thanks for asking about the fire situation.
getting a stew on the go? certain people have cooked a full sunday dinner! :D
everyone brings something to keep their fire off the ground, whether it be a purpose made bbq type container, or something youve made or converted. a popular choice is an old metal jerry can with the side cut out with some sort of grill or mesh over the hole, take a look at the many pictures in this and other meet threads to give you some ideas.
the exeption to this is when someone specifically asks if they can construct a fire pit for a legitimate project, its normally ok, but it is the exeption.
on the subject of projects, there seems to be a healthy turnout for this one. if anyone wants to share a skill or has any ideas for activitys, just sing out! :) as mentioned in a previous post there should be lots of wood available should anyone want to try their hand at shelter building etc (dissmantled at the end of the meet) ok guys over to you. :D

Woah there Ned! One step at a time. haha. I've not been very adventurous in the past, tending to go with freeze dried food cooked on a gas burner. Given the company I thought it was probably time to get a little more adventurous at last! ;)
everyone brings something to keep their fire off the ground
I'm currently tryna figure out a cheap homemade firebox that'll do the trick. Got a couple of ideas up my sleeve, and will see how they pan out.

Alot of the guys self included tend to use old jerry cans with one side cut off. Craddocks sell them for about a £5 each and they do the trick pretty well.
Just have a few bricks or a stand underneath them and jobs a good un.
If you are feeling clever / bored / sick of the telly you could have a go at making one of these.
http://zenstoves.net/Templates/NimblewillNomadStove.pdf
They are pretty small and I photocopied the templates and blew them up as I like a big fire me.
I also used mild steel as life is to short to f@rt about trying to cut stainless.

That may end up being the way forward. I was thinking about trying to find an old beer keg and chopping the top half off. Then all I gotta do is get a dutch oven to go with it. :)
I think I'll leave the homemade option for the time being. A Jerry can will be my fallback option though.

Not much to tell you about my bushcraft, pretty much non-existant, just looking to learn and get out in the fresh air more. Done a few camping trips but my wife doesn't believe in travelling light so this time it's just going to be me. I'm hoping to fit everything I'll need into one rucksack. What's the minimum kit I'm going to need for the weekend?

it was my first meet in dec and i brought far too much. mainly food which i took home with me. you can definitely get everything you need in one bag. you also have to leave enough space for whatever neil and/or martin manage to sell you:lmao:
Hi Ben,
Been commuting to your part of the world (Hinckley) for the last few months doing some work for a well known motorcycle manufacturer, it's a long drive so I'm really looking forward to a few days away from the roads and the car.

hiya mike, kit?
basics are very much like your ordinary camping... something to keep off the elements, hammock, tent, tarp or bivy bag. something to sleep in, bag, duvet, blanket etc. something to keep you warm and dry, something to cook on/in (off the ground) and enough grub for your stay. some kind of seat is handy too, unless you want to make one, anything else for this kind of trip is personal to yourself. there are very few restrictions on this site, take a look at post 1, just come along and enjoy yourself, youll be made very welcome :)

Fair play. I'm sure I'm gonna end up bringing WAY too much gear this time! I stopped off in the layby, on the way back from a meeting in Tipton last week, to check out the lie of the land. Where do we park anyway? By the farm buildings, or closer to the woods themselves? I might need to bring myself a sherpa! haha ;)

Parking is where the toilet block and tap are located.
I believe (correct me if I'm wrong Steve) we are aiming to use the southern end of the woods this time, and if the weather has been OK you should be able to drive down to off load your kit.
Any questions, just ask away here or by pm.

whatevers small really. i'll be bringing some rat packs and maybe a steak for sat night. believe it or not i brought a 30l plastic box with allsorts in december! a loaf, sausages, bacon, the steak i mentioned earlier, some veggies, fruit, tommy k. i pretty much cleared my kitchen and brought most of it home, to a 'told you so' look from my wife. i didn't actually eat in volume even 50% of what i normally would over a weekend. that might just be me tho. i would suggest you are better bringing too much of whatever, food or kit, and being comfortable, than trying to really lightweight it first time out. that way you'll be able to figure out what you need in comfort over a few meets. i think everyone's kit is quite personal to them so its just a case of seeing what you require for your desired comfort level. tbh i'm a beginner myself so i'll be refining my loadout some more at the end of the month :)
oh and i might be bringing a cake! :D

Hopefully you can season the dutchie beforehand, makes life easier. Wilkinson's sell folding racks that fit into the jerry can perfect and keep it off the ground for about £2, saves tabbing bricks in or using uneven rocks. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs or anything though, just thought I'd mention the dutchie in case you weren't aware...

no worries mate, i have most of the mora knives, there is nit that many that i have not got, i will bring a couple along for the clipper, and if there is a mora that some one has got, that they would like a sheath for, i can do that also, i also have the spyderco bushcraft, i will make a couple for that as well, i have a freind who has given me quite a few matindale knives also, as he makes them for a living, so sheaths for them as well, will be made in the not so distant futre, but there is one knife i have been putting of doing a sheath for its this one lol.

so sweet so sweet must have one Martin.
I bring a few things too, going to be bringing some flint to play with for people any one else trying out any other skills?
Really keen to try out the bow drill if someone brings a kit along:campfire:
Martin, what time can we get in from on Friday? I know it says 17:00 in post 1 but I was hoping to set up in the daylight as it will be my first real experience with tarp and hammock.
Mike.
Sorry meant Steve not Martin.

I'll bring a kit along incase there isn't any on site to source for you to have a go.
As for time allowed in, I'll leave that for Steve to answer. I wouldn't want to upset the landowner with my ill-informed answer.
There will be plenty there to assist with your setting up if help is required.

Been there!
I reckon that pretty much describes where I am currently.
I'm hoping to bring the Lavvu to this one but sadly as from the fleet of vehicles that currently rest on our drive at home only the Yaris has MOT and is not earmarked to be pushed into service doing something else.
It means I might have to leave the stove at home and you know what they say about Lavvus with out stoves....

Aah, when I grow up I'm gonna have a garage! Sign of a real man. I only have a battered shed at the moment. ;)
I'm thinking of something like that though. Got an old fishing rod pod I'm thinking of trying to nick the legs off. .

i havent got a clue about the mod your talking about i did the carabiner mod but still tie a bow. i have a idear for a waterborn knot and a clovehitch mod but im not sure the DD heveduty webbing will be up to holding my weight with out the webbing being doubled up. im gona have to get in touch withh DD at some point and find out the max weight the webbing can take as a single strand.

Bru,
I think he means the prussik and crab mod for the underblanket which attaches to a seperate ridge line under the tarp. I'll probably hammock for this one so you can have a looksee if you want. I'll be landing around lunchtime mate.
ok will have a look at yours Andy i tyed mine to the carabiner closest to the hammock with bows lol easy fast and worked well.

I know what you mean Karl, i did that at NW one meet up. Use the loops on the UB and prussik to the hammock tapes is an easy solution, you just don't get the UB up the sides as much as using the ridgeline method. Both work though.

What sort of dog would be best? Dachshunds might be ok, nice and low. Or maybe alsatians would save bending down so much :)
