Any why I can only post quick replies - to fully reply to threads.

No smilies etc.

Have you got a "Go Advanced" button in the bottom right of the quick reply box?

Also, go into your settings page, and under "General Settings" check under the "Miscellaneous Options" bit that your message editor interface is set to "Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls"
