Motorbikeman has kindly pdf'd my pattern for a sporran. This makes an excellent possibles pouch or survival bag. Besides it looks good in any period from neolithic to the present :)

What would you peeps advise for a thickness of leather for making a possibles pouch?

Well the original sporran that I took the pattern off was about 3mm thick, but had softened beautifully with use. My small one that I use with my arisaid is only about 1.5mm and it works fine. I think the *handle* (sorry, I don't know the correct term for this) of the leather matters more than the thickness.
Perhaps I'm not the best person to advise you on this one since my possible pouch is a handbag!

Keep your eyes open for someone throwing out a leather suite, it's amazing how much good leather is salvageable :D
Good stuff for trial patterns too.
