View Full Version : Rough Close TORM event November 2010 Meet
Date: 12 - 14 November 2010.
Arrival time: from 17:00 on the 12th
This Meet is scheduled to coincide with the 2010 TORM (http://www.reenactorsmarket.co.uk/) Event
There is absolutely no compunction to attend the event if you do not wish to!
Fees: I need to have all monies before 10am on the Sunday.
As per usual, we're on PC11  . At the moment there are people booked to use the Guild Field – See ‘Dropping kit off’ and ‘Parking’.
As per usual, the location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/).
This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.
Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey scale (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf) map
Site fees are £4.40 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_2010.pdf) - Important! - please note that any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which is above the camping fees will be automatically considered to be a donation to Rough Close campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.
Following on from the ’Leave no Trace’ (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52806) thread and to try to pre-empt possible problems:
What follows is going to make the Meet (and site) seem to be very rule bound – in fact both are quite relaxed.
These rules are there because we, as a group, and the site have a reputation to maintain. Unfortunately the world is full of critics who love to point a finger – and we're there on the trust that we’ve worked hard to gain.
This list isn't exhaustive - common sense applies. If in doubt, Ask!
Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions at a Meet – if you bring along family (or a friend) then you also accept responsibility for them and their actions whilst they are on site.
Forum members under the age of 18 are welcome. However, they must be accompanied by at least one parent (or legal guardian).
You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee! The sites bin is the big orange thing in the campers car park.
Fees must be paid. It’s rare, but sometimes people forget.
Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited!
This is a scouting site and is not open to the general public - please don't walk through another groups pitch whilst drinking alcohol and/or smoking.
‘Appropriate’ behaviour: The site can, at any time, decline a booking – they can also ask* us (individually or wholly) to leave during the Meet. Be aware that other users of the site might be passing by our pitch at any time of the day or night – I do get feedback!
* i.e. Tell. The site is registered as educational land, there is neither a choice nor an ability to negotiate. Fees would still be owed!
Dropping kit off: The parking bay by the adjacent Guild Field is for the use of those who have booked the field (and/or cabin). If the field/cabin is booked for use then it is a requirement that permission is sought (and given) before you drive down.
Parking: Vehicles need to be parked up in the campers car park.
Fires: Open fires must be raised and contained. Periodically there is a shortage of wood available to burn - if you want to cook on an open fire bring a supply of wood or charcoal
Food: Unless organised prior to the Meet, you need to bring enough food to feed yourself while you are at the Meet.
Accidents do happen and people will try to help out where they can - If you are visiting someone else’s pitch do not expect to be fed.
The Meet list: When you copy and paste your name into the list please remember to include the section between Meet List and the names.
Use the appropriate tools at the appropriate times.
It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.
The pitch is suitable for using tents, hammocks and bivvies - use what you have and are comfortable using. Even with 30+ using the pitch there is still ample room to bring/use one type and trial/experiment with another.
If you stick your name down and can no longer make it, please say so.
Please note that, on occasion, the first post will be edited to include better information. Although updates/edits will be posted in the thread, the first post needs to be re-read well in advance of the Meet
In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site (outstanding fees will still be owed)
The 'Touchy Subject' bit:
Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.
It's fine if you want to:
be on your own
lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over etc
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that :lmao:
practice flora and fauna ID
so on and so forth ...
This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.
Copy and paste yada yada ...

Yup :o
Having now conjured the power of Google-Fu - I don't do games consoles (disc: nowt wrong with them, just not my thing), so to me a Man O War is either a jellyfish* or a 16th to 19th Century warship - I gues you learn something new every day

I always thought it was a heavy metal band. :S
Further use of the 'Fu' has shown that, amongst other things, Man O'War seems to be ...
An outmoded warship.
Something which is usually considered a jelly fish, but isn''t.
A heavy metal band.
A type of minature war game (Dungeons and Dragons type thing).
A comic book hero.

Heads-up!
Hmm ... in light of the There is a thief amongst us !! (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63731) thread.
This is about John's bad trade and not what happened at the Middlewood Meet.
I'm not in the position to name and shame, nor am I in the position to state whether the person involved already has their name down on the list or not. I had hoped that I wouldn't need to use this bit of the OP ...
... In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. ...
This is a case of 'Pay before you Play'! If you owe, you pay before you come to the next RC Meet.
Time for a tidy ...

As in cases such as these it puts the few of us newcomers that came to the RC event last under suspicion from those that don't know who exactly is responsible for not paying John. It's not very pleasant as just two or three of us were new to that event. I really think a name and shame should be in order to clear those of us that have nothing to hide. Even if that person pays now and all is kept quiet, that doubt will still hang over our heads forever more, and that certainly isn't fair to us.

I hear what you're saying JD. The forum policy seems to be against naming and shaming - whether I agree with it is irrespective :( .
Unfortunately I need to give some kind of ambiguity to the situation - hence not saying whether the person in question is already on the list or not. I've purposely stuck myself between a rock and a hard place because not doing so could still point unfairly and possibly incorrectly.
Like John said in the other thread - newish to the forum - not neccessarily new to Meets ;) .
There is also the chance that someone with their name down may, at the last moment, not be able to make it - If asked nicely, I'm sure that John will happily confirm that they have no outstanding dealings to complete ;) .

I can certainly see the difficult position your are in and I really don't want to dwell on this subject and darken the shadow that has already been thrown on this thread. Problem is, that by protecting the guilty now the innocent are by association of being newish to the forum, are tainted by it, and that's not on.
I may have a solution though, which I'll take to PM so that we can get back to business here.

I'm not in the position to name and shame, nor am I in the position to state whether the person involved already has their name down on the list or not. I had hoped that I wouldn't need to use this bit of the OP ...
This is a case of 'Pay before you Play'! If you owe, you pay before you come to the next RC Meet.

Asking for clarification isn't stupid ;) .
It's an attempt to protect the good reputation of the Meets. I've taken an executive decision* that if someone is purposely dodging payment(s) or reneging on trade(s)/deal(s) then they won't be coming to RC Meets until it's either sorted or an agreement has been reached between the original parties.
Sometimes it's a genuine error 'I thought I'd paid' etc - and a quiet bump usually sorts it out. That isn't what this is about. This is trying to tackle repeated attempts at getting payment(s)/trade(s) sorted.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Site Fees.
* Normally I would ask for input from the Old Hands.

Not to worry - sometimes real life gets in the way. There'll be plenty more to come along to
I have one of these stoves for sale
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Portable-Military-Camping-Stove-Tent-Heater-Cot-Camp-/150512266196?pt=LH_DefaultDoma in_0&hash=item230b3aebd4
I have only used it about four times for a short while, whilst trying to concoct a set up which allowed me to use it with a tarp/hammock. Having given up trying ( I bought a cheap tent from Go outdoors and some warm clothing instead) I have no use for it. You can see from the details on Ebay that it has a good set of features and useful controls. Even I managed to get it burning well, with a good heat output.
I can bring it to the next Rough Close meet (assuming I actually make it to the meet) so any prospective purchaser can try before buying for £75.
It cost me over £150 (delivered including tax) and so £75 compares well with that and also with the new price of £155 plus UK taxes from Ebay. (And bringing it to RC also saves on transport costs)
If anyone is interested I will bring it along. Just let me know.

Having read Post #01, everyone will be aware that this Meet was set to coincide with The Original Reenactors Market (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38233&p=773729#post773729).
This is a quick bump for both the Meet and the event - the event is _about_ 10 miles down the road.
As a bit of fun and inspired by:
on the subject of badgers, would i be ok to bring a bag of sand and have a go at making a sand trap to try and get some good badger prints?
How about a challenge to design and make a trap to show evidence of having one or more Warwickshire Iridescent Pigmy Elephants (WIPE) in the area? No prize involved except for the knowledge gained ;) . For more information on the Warwickshire Iridescent Pigmy Elephant, please see Wayland's thread about the September Meet's cold case.
I had intended to put this post in a week or so ago :o .

Muddy - Desert DPM Goretx Jacket not issued. Its an XL or even slightly bigger after £30 for it.
Andy BB - Vango Peace Tipi 500 - Brand new (recently opened up package I bought last year and found 2 tipis inside, not the one ordered - no wonder I thought it was so heavy! I'll be trying out mine for the first time here, so you can get to see one in action! (and judging by the weather forecast, it'll be a good test...) If anyone's interested I might also bring along a British Army No 2 Mk 2 Modified cooker - not a backpacker by any means - think of it as a turbocharged Optimus 111 on steroids! Cooked a nice roast chicken in it a couple of months ago.)
NLW - Dutch issue kip mat and storage bag, 2 x US issue mess tin sets, Coleman Exponent cook set (used twice), UK Jungle issue sleeping bag, UK issue mossie net (large 'over the cot' type), RAF Survival Knife, Ka-Bar (new, un-used) Interested parties attending the meet pm me for details etc.

As Steve said - the site's down atm. As far as I'm aware, it's being re-jigged - I'm not sure that I would have effectively removed access to making bookings or finding the site :dunno: .
S/T/S list added to and tidied.

To try to enable as easy access to sales/trades/swaps as we can I'm going to set a time to posse up.
Everyone who wishes to be involved needs to gather at the top end of PC11 (somewhere between myself and Steve) between 10:30 and 10:40 on Saturday (and before someone *asks* ... Morning :nofeed: :lmao: ). We can sort the fineries from there - It also means that I'll definately be available at a specified time to sort fees  :lmao: .

Thankyou very much folks. It really is appreciated. Now, all posts after this should be filled with good cheer and happy thoughts. And someone take pics please.
Can I arrive around 12:00 tomorrow?
Can I arrive around 12:00 tomorrow?
That's a bit too early - because of the weather* I'll say arrive from 3pm onwards for this one.
* And because the weather is also causing early dusks.
First piece is almost finished - it's a usable prototype  .
Which works quite nicely - hopefully it'll be cold this w/e :hatscarf:
Now for the shot glasses and thumb mugs ;) .
Well, the thumb mugs aren't quite thumb mugs - I reckon that they would come under the term 'Beaker Thingie' ;) . The pattern for the shot sized thingies worked quite niclely.
I have at the moment:
A working demo model 'Shot Thingie'*,
EDIT: Six sellable 'Shot Thingies'
Three sellable 'Beaker Thingies'
I'm in the process of sorting two more 'Shot Thingies' - now done and added to the list above  .
All 'Thingies' are hot dip beeswaxed and have been tested for leaks  .

I'm fairly sure I'm not going to make it.
Wife went for day surgery on Wed but is not being discharged until this morning because of complications.
Looking after her combined with daughter having lots of fits at the moment means I can't get away.
I was looking forward to my first meet :-(

Looks like a good time and great food all round. Sorely disapointed in your camera excuse Mesquite.
Just wanted to confirm what others have said - thanks (despite his protestations) to Decorum for another good meet, with the usual (and much appreciated) willingness to pass on knowledge and experience.
I took some pics of setups but my camers is on the blink and I can't download them to the PC - good job Christmas is coming(?)
My thanks to all those who came along and made for another memorable Meet :thankyou: :grouphug: goodjob .
Although Andy2112 was missed, it was nice to talk about the chance of manky weather without someone actually causing its onset :p :lmao: .
We shall remain ever vigilant for the whereabouts of the W.I.P.E ;) .
