View Full Version : Comrie Croft meet up?

Everything Mac
30-09-2010, 14:06
late October early November.

Perhaps we could go down the skill share route again as I enjoyed that last time!

Would be nice to get a decent group of people going! I've put a thread up on BB but as per usual there has been a limited response.

cheers

Everything Mac

Early November would be best for me too tbh.

I think I may get a few folk going and then if anyone else comes too then we can have a bit more of a laugh.

Ti Viper - if you have the gear to sleep out in those temperatures then you would be more than welcome! - if we get numbers similar to last year then you may be able to buy a fair old bit of kit there. ;)

first weekend in november?

there has been some interest in this from the BB lads too.

Scoman - don't worry mate, it is a learning experience for every one. I'll be offering lessons this year. Though I would sure like to get some time off so some one can teach me how to sharpen stuff! :D

I'll call up comrie this afternoon if I get the chance.

Hi Tom (feel like i'm talking to myself lol)

I'm in Irvine, I've been camping (sites not wild) and fly fishing for years, but now i have decided that the hammock and tarp and wild camping are the way forward. So at the minute i'm deciding which one to go for, i like the look of the tenth wonder Hornet, and i'm going to get the sewing machine out and have a shot at making a tarp from ripstop nylon then giving it a silnylon coating.

So i have set myself this winter to get everything bought and made for starting heading out next spring.

Thanks for the welcome.

Tom

P.S Everything Mac, if people do have stuff for sale then i might be persuaded, i do like a new shiny lol

I just got off the phone with Comrie and they have pencilled us in for the first weekend of November. - As it stands the hall is free but there is a wedding party taking place in the lodge/ farmhouse.
I said that we would get around 20 folk there, in a week or so when I have a better idea of numbers I'll phone up comrie again and confirm it all.
We will also have the field to ourselves again :D

Tom - we had quite a lot of people selling their kit in the hall last year. - I see no reason why that wouldn't happen again this year as long as the hall remains available.

I'm going to be fairly run off my feet with uni work the next month or so; so I might be a bit slow at getting things done.

It would be nice to see a similar set up to last year with two parachutes and the like. - though I'm afraid I do not know who organised that and I don't have the means to do it myself. - but I'm more than happy to help out any way I can.

I'd sure like to see another pot of stew on the go this year too :D:D:D

all the best guys - see you all in a month :D

Due to a kind lift by Locum76, I turned up at Comrie Croft last year with no "bushcraft" kit - apart from my Wellies.

A really friendly mob and uber helpful.

I was able to watch quite a few skills being passed on.

The highlight for me was watching "Man the Hunter" head for a fish supper from the Chippy in Crieff - as all the stew was gone.

You'll have a great time.

Early November for me as I'm on the H4H Jock Crawl (charity pub crawl/tin rattling) at the end of October.

Hahahahaha - I mentioned no names.

I never saw your triumphant return as I'd "shot the craw" by then.

The stew looked good, though I'd left before it was ready, the dog enjoyed the reindeer bones etc that I begged.

I have little outdoors kit, no skills (I can teach anyone interested to man knit) but a fair few knives!
As long as there is vodka to keep me warm I think my lack of decent kit wouldn't be too much of an issue!
Shift permitting and swmbo not going off on one I could be interested :)

I'll call up CC again later on this week to confirm everything with them. - As far as I know we can use the hall and we have a free run of the field but I'll double check everything and let you lot know.

I'll be bringing the forging stuff once again - but I'm a bit better than I was last year and a bit more organised. so....
If you want to have a go at forging let me know! - if you want to make a knife it would be great if you could bring some steel with you.

I'm sure everyone would be happy contributing some veg and a couple of quid towards some meat.

- I spoke with Toddy and she suggested that the main focus of this meet will be forging, tool care, repair and sharpening + firelighting. (+man knitting and drinking ) but obviously there will be other things going on too. - not to mention it is nice to just have a good old natter with like minded people!

rather looking forward to this now!

looks to be around 20-30 folk saying they will attend at the minute. - I'm ringing CC tomorrow to confirm everything and I'll put up a post saying so.

This is the kind of thing I would love to be at, I would not be able to get there though, well not this year anyway. We are out in Morvern, loads of room in our garden if anyone wants to head up this way fishing in future. Just now is a good time for getting food.
We are a family of 5 and my youngest has a form of autism, so basically I can not go anywhere without him. Is this the sort of thing children are welcome? what about dogs? just wondering for maybe a future one.

Everything Mac
06-10-2010, 14:51

I might come along to this as well, catch up with a few folk. BTW the hammock spots are just up the hill from where we normally put up the parachute, 20-30 yards at most, enough distance to get a good nights sleep if you are of a mind ;)

just got off the phone with CC and we are a go for camping and the various activities we want to do :D

- but I am awaiting a return call to confirm that we can use the hall as there is a wedding on that weekend - staying in the barn I believe. - not the end of the world if we can't use it but it would help. - I'll post as soon as I know.

Andy

Everything Mac
07-10-2010, 12:56
right then - just got off the phone with CC

We DO NOT have the use of the hall as the Wedding party will be using it over the weekend. - I suspect however that we may be able to use it on the friday for a bit. - Andrew also said the there might be other sheltered space we could use. - Sorry about that everyone! - they weren't sure if we could use it last week but it looked promising.

I hope that doesn't put any one off. - it just means that we will be outside more of the time.

so to confirm everything

we are staying here: - http://www.comriecroft.com/

Prices are £9 PPPN - all details of how to get there etc are on the website.

The main focus of the weekend will be forging, tool care. repair, sharpening and firelighting. - there will be other things going on of course. - I have not doubt that some one will bring a few toys for us to play with - not to mention the odd dram.

We have a few very kind offers to bring along some big pots for stew - as per last year if people could make a contribution to veg and a bit of money towards getting a joint of meat that would be appreciated. - but make sure you have enough food and something to cook with for yourself (duh)

There are open fire pits dotted around the camp and there will be at least one parachute shelter up with a big fire for people to congregate in.

There are also plenty of spaces for hammocks and such like.

SWMBO, children and dogs welcome. - common sense applies (we had a wee lad burn his hand last year)

with regards to forging - as far as I know I am the only one going who has done this but if anyone is experienced then you are more than welcome to use my kit. - lessons and demo's are available from me. - ideally if you can bring some steel that would be great!

I think I have covered everything.

All the best - I'm going to go write my dissertation now.

Am really looking forward to this, ever since the Eglington meet I've been itching to get to one again. Reckon should be able to supply a decent amount of tatters and perhaps some other odds n sods from the garden, but much of it has been eaten already.. :)

Been trying to get odd bits of iron or mild steel to bash about, but nothing as of yet- well I did get a couple of large bolts about 1" diameter, no idea if these will be any good? Picked up a buckshee tool box and what is likely to become a home made anvil - one of the dooferyferkin thingys that hold rail tracks, or so I'm told - I may bring it to get folks opinions to see if it's any good? Still plenty of time to keep an eye out for scrap iron or mild steel though.. :D

I've just been in the garage tonight and realised I've got more Bivi Bags, Basha's, Windproofs etc than I'll ever need. Some still in the packets, some with very light use and all well cared for!

Right - I may not say a lot...but when I speak the gods themselves pay attention!
I see I have a bunnet - but where is my kilt!
In the interests of accuracy I am entitled to wear the Leslie tartan (from my mothers side of the family and also my connections with The KOSB), a sporran a la Jacobite pattern/Ozhaggis head type would be nice as I use one when in the woods, a wee knife in my sock, and a bigger one at my belt - and a good dram in my hand!
Good on the Mad Scots!

Kilt nothing, it's a plaid he's having, just as soon as his belt's finished :D
The rest of his cultural assimilation outfit will appear as the year and his jaunts go on
His rucsac now has straps, and a couple of bushcrafty bits within it :)

Does anyone know where I can get a one litre dry bag, in tartan ???

cheers,
M

Am I the only one who thinks that the photo quoted by decorum above should be Mr. Fenna's avatar?

If there were a fire in the back ground it would be the most bushcrafty picture ever! :p

Well following last weekend Culloch Jnr has been badly bitten, he's off wild campinh tonight with a couple of mates!
I'd like to thank all those who took the time to offer him advice & encouragement or even just include the lad in their conversation! He really appreciated it and kept going on about what great company and no prima donna's etc!
Worst thing was he saidwhen he gets old he wants to be like Tam!

This is going to get expensive!

I had a great time , and only knew one person when I arrived !....that soon changed mind :D.

Who is/was the lady who makes the bushcraft tunics and was doing the cooking and came around with the tablet ?

Culloch Jnr is now called 'Jimmy pockets' due to him losing stuff around his many pockets. Would be good to see him as a memeber here too.
