Looking through these forums iv seen several posts on bed rolls and such and it seems the options are either cough up for a Duluth bed roll or make your own. so iv had a wee look around the web and came across this canvas bed roll in the US, wondering if anyone has one or has any opinion on them

as i really fancy a good canvas bed roll i wonder if this one would be up to the job:

Compared to the duluth pack it seems reasonable for the price, opinions?

After getting hold of a Duluth for a few days and taking a really good look at it, I think I could put together a pretty good replica even with my shoddy sewing skills. It's one of the things on my to do list for this winter.

Breaking the Duluth down it's nothing more than a canvas bag (think old school square sleeping bag) with a double base to slide a mat into, two full length zips along sides of the top and another zipped compartment for a pillow.

If I can get hold of some decent grade cotton duck canvas I'll be giving it a go.

This is something I've been tempted to have a go at as well. There's a place on ebay that sells marine grade proofed canvas by the metre Rich, I'll try to find the link if you want it. I've got a WWII canvas tent I've nearly cut up for a bedroll and smock but just can't bring myself to butchering it. I'd rather it went to someone into reenactment or something...

Those butler bags look very nice but they're still pricey for what they are if you ask me.

If you get chance I wouldn't mind a look to price it up, I'll have a search on there anyway

It'd have to be green though :) or maybe brown ...

I need to look into my sewing machine situation too at some point.

I think Topknot has made something along these lines, and Pignut was organising a group buy at one stage.

If this ever does become a group buy I think the contents of the bag should go to the person whose forum name is closest to the product.

Well whadaya know ... :naughty:

Yeah I know what you're saying Gill, there are times though that we don't find the right hammock trees and end up crashing on a beach somewhere.

I thought it might be a fun project too when the nights draw in.
