Which sleeping mat in a hammock?

Hallo,

on my next tour I would like to use my hammock with a tarp instead of my small tent. Now the temperature goes down in the nights and I need an isolation from the bottom. The problem is which isolation do I use in a hammock? I know that some use underblankets but I would like to use an Evazotte slpeeping mat. The question is which size should I take.
I thought about the size 190x60x9 mm (+ some wings) or maybe the Doublemat from Exped but this one is just 4 mm in a single sheet when it is spread out in the hammock. Is 4 mm enough for autumn and spring (temperature at night goes down to -5° C)?

Which sleeping mats do you use in your hammocks?

i just usea cheap rolly mat, but rarley go below 0oC .

i have a DD camping hammock, with the zipped space for insulation and i have used , especially this time of year, leaf litter & dry grass etc, screened for bugs and anthing too decomposed. saves lugging extra gear and is suprisingly good insulator.

i,m interested, if anyone else does this? or am i, as my mate says, slowly turning into a real life tramp?

Can't say I'm familiar with the Evazotte mats but I used to use a 3/4 thermarest half inflated. At -5 I reckon you're pushing it with a mat to be honest, any reason why you don't fancy an underblanket instead ? The full length down winter ones from the states take some beating.

I don´t want to carry an underblanket with me because sometimes I will sleep on a narrow bench in some refuge hut where I need an foam mat.

Well the last couple of times I've been out I've been experimenting. I've found that my thermalite self inflating pad is much better than the ccf matt as it seems to bend a bit better around me (it is a bit wider too) and doesn't move around as much as the other. I've also found if you have a slacker hammock (and sleep further to the diagonal than a tighter hang) it's hard to get it positioned right (especially the ccf one). Either way I seem to get cold shoulders a lot of the time where it doesn't reach up high enough. An underblanket I'm sure is the way to go but I'm still reluctant to commit..

I don't use an underblaket, I use foam mats. At anything under about 6oC, one mat isnt enough. I then have to use at least two 24" foam mats side by side to stop my shoulders getting cold. For cold weather, you need insulation around your shoulders, however you do it, mats or underblankets.
Evazote is gossamer gear right? id use 2 side by side at least, but I suspect this will not be enough. I have done a -5 with 3 foam mats and no sleeping bag. I have also done a -13 with a 0C bag,2 mats and 3 windscreen reflectors and been plenty warm enough.
If you are not going to be sleeping on the ground, an underquilt is definitely the way to go.

i spent my first 2 nights sleeping out under a tarp in the uk this weekend using my australian swag. i absolutely loved the open air aspect but the slugs crawling on my swag last night and even in my swag this morning was something else itslef!!

ive decided maybe i need to try a hammock but am anxious about getting cold. this was a great thread to find. i love the DD idea, had no idea hammocks like that existed, am also interested in the themes of thicknes, density and shape of mats. if you make and use these winged mats are you using them inside a DD or just to lay on with other hammocks?

i liked the sound john f of your down mat but coughed at the price, i dont think im that serious!!
