Dave,

A poncho liner is an American military item. Originally fielded in the Vietnam war as a form of insulation that could be tied inside a poncho and then used as a light sleeping bag. Basically, it is a light nylon quilt with some ties around the edge. It can be used alone as a light blanket or with the poncho for a bit more protection.
As you can imagine, if used inside a poncho on the ground, it will have some moisture condense inside, perhaps too much depending on the humidity.

I have used them quite a lot, they are better than no insulation but they are limited in how well they work. The conditions need to be mild, not too cold, not too wet, etc. The originals were a woodland camo, now they are the ACU pattern and the USMC have a great woodland digiital/coyote brown reversible one. They are the same in size and configuration and fit best in a genuine US military poncho. Very light and compact when packed up. Hope that helps. Here is a link to a real one FS. Cheers!

Yes chap, i'll just get you the details of mine. give me a mo.

The one i have was issued to me as a jungle sleeping bag the label says sleeping bag warm weather, but if you open it up it becomes a tarp liner, it has tie up points in the same locations as the issue basha, it's the same shape as a square sleeping bag the nsn is :8465-99-869-5310 here's one on evilbay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/British-Army-Jungle-Sleeping-Bag-NEW-with-comp-Sack-_W0QQitemZ270537434937QQcmdZVi ewItem?rvr_id=124960556121&rvr_id=124960556121&cguid=14f0924012a0a0aad54457b4 ffe9dad7)

Got the British lightweight 'Jungle sleeping bag' and the poncho liner too. I've been told that the original US poncho liners were heavier weight.

Deffo recommend the sleeping bag over the poncho liner though for as Southey says it has the tie ons for the poncho. There is a Ranger Rick conversion kit for quite a bit of cash that does have the zip for the poncho liner.

Like the idea of putting a zip for your head to go through but I'll sew some cord on so I can tie it up like a cloak for the same job.

I have an old U.S poncho liner that i have modded to use as a cloak, very comfy too.I have used the poncho liner with the poncho as a sleeping bag .Also like Southey i use the lightweight jungle sleeping bag too of which i have tied a cotton liner inside and then put it into a bivi bag.

How did you mod it for a cloak/cape, just sew in a few ties for around your neck?

Another reason I've heard for the poncho liner was to keep heat out, rather than in - that it could be tied to a poncho used as a shelter in desert/arid conditions to keep the sun from heating up the inside too much. No idea if it works as such though, I've not got one.
