Ok, following on from the "Why am I carrying...." thread, I notice quite a few of us have what I would describe as "Boy Scout Pockets"

My jean pockets usually carry a Swiss Army knife, a small torch, a lighter (I don't smoke) an antler whistle, a steel striker, my wallet, coin pouch and keys. I'll save the contents of my jacket for a later posting.

I've never weighed this little collection but I'm sure it adds to the wear on my shoes and pockets.

Lets face it most "normal" people do not carry stuff like this but manage to survive everyday life well enough.

I could justify most of these items in one way or another but I wonder......Do I just carry this lot because it may be useful or as some kind of "comfort blanket".

So what do you have in your pockets at this moment and why?.... ;)

Wallet, Keys and a Leatherman Juice Pro. Of course there are a couple of small torches on the keyring but that is it.

Almost normal.

Always my Spyderco Kiwi. No matter how cool my other knives are this is the one I always have to hand. An empty wallet, keys and Photon light are the usual others.

At the moment wallet, usb stick, keys, swiss army knife, mag solitaire, mobile and a bottle opener shaped like a penguin!

When I’m out and about the back pockets are filled with paper/pens, firesteel and a lot of random junk ;)

Spyderco Penknife plus usually flotsam (keys, mobile etc). Normally there'd be a Gerber but it's on another pair of trousers for some reason. In darker months there'd be a Surefire E2E as well.

Wallet, keys and SAK are in there always. Most times I also have a whistle, knife and mini torch in another pocket. Beyond that I have most other things in a pouch that's like a bushcraft handbag :D

In my left hip pocket I carry a credit card wallet for my ID and other papers I may need and a small starflash mirror fits perfect, as does a fresnel lens. My left front pocket contains a Puma 900 Earl, a small lighter (don't smoke) and a leather finger tab for shooting my bow and it also works as a strop of sorts. Right front pocket has a ring with P38 can opener, small whistle and LED light. My right hip pocket holds a pair of leather gloves.

Could you guys spend a few days in the bush with what you have on you ?

Right now, I realize it would be hard. I'd miss a container to boil/store water (I'd have to make one out of wood, I guess). I'd also miss my teddy bear quite a lot...

That's dead right - it's the one thing you can't really carry in a pocket or a kit (although I have a mess tin in my possibles pouch), but it's almost essential.

My pocketses is a handbag ... It's got, [lotta stuff] female essentials (spare your blushes guys), mascara, eyeliner, thimble, antihistamines, ibuprofen, 3 finds bags, mini colour pencils, silver pendant, tea bag, hone stone, opinel knife and a small bit of willow rope.

You mean that all that stuff is "female essentials"? On top of the other stuff?

I'm not sure I understand how a thimble counts as "female essentials"... Can you explain what you use it for that is so different from my "male" use of a thimble (i.e. pushing a needle through canvas)?

Anyway, you can get rid of the thimble. That'll save you a whole 7 to 10 grams!

Use the point of your Opinel to make a conical indentation about 1/4 mm in your thumb nail: put the point against the nail and "drill" very gently. This is just deep enough to act like the dimples in a thimble, so the needle doesn't slide around. Your nail should be thick enough for you to push the needle through three or four thicknesses of denim or canvas without hurting. Good enough for an emergency tent repair.

Keith.

Errrrr, Keith

I think you read Toddy's post a little wrong

Keith.

Nope; Tampons, femfresh sachets, bio degrade-disposal bags = female essentials. Well I did *try* to spare your blushes.....suppose I could look on it as firestart materials. The rest is just usefuls.

No thimble   I sew constantly, my thimble is more important than my purse! In fact I'm sewing just now....medieval hose cod-piece actually. ;)

Maybe this post'd be better scrubbed.

Big thimble, or very small shot glass?

Reminds me of a joke from the Beverly Hillbillies Book of Country Humour.

Two hicks talking about their gran'paws.
One says "my ole gran'paw lived to be a hunnerd an' four, and he never needed glasses"
The other replies "wah so speshul 'bout that? Lotsa people drink straight out the bottle"

That's a good question. I suppose it would have a lot to do with the environment you found yourself in.

With the contents of my normal jacket there would be little problem but with just my jeans pockets lets see.

Well the SAK deals with cutting and there is a little Dog ID container on it which contains water purification tabs.

Fire is provided by the lighter or the steel striker in a pinch (scorched denim makes good tinder but this is a chicken and egg situation)

The whistle is good for signalling if needed and attracts my dog from a good distance.

The torch is an Inova LED jobbie, good for use and signalling with good battery life (Lithium AA cell)

Direction finding is no problem with an analogue watch.

The main problem would be shelter which in some environments could be provided with the cutting tool and foliage.

But of course the best survival tool of all is contained in the wallet…….Money and credit cards. ;)

Actually, my wallet size kit has 3' by 3' heavy duty tinfoil. Formed carefully over a stump or your knee and you have a pot. A very thin pot mind you but one that can be placed near (not on!) a fire and left to boil.

Bardster
18-05-2005, 23:46
I did read somewhere that you can make a pot from leather - the slow seekage of water through it will stop it burning - it will boil first

Goose

You can boil water in a paper bag, apparently. We tried it with the scouts a couple of weeks ago, a top tip if you try it is dont use one that is held together with water based adhesive!

Ok. I guess that about covers it for trouser pockets (and handbags) but what about the jackets you usually wear.

For me I would have to add to my first list : another lighter (windproof and waterproof), GPS, mobile phone, plastic bags, lead and treats (for the dog), cable ties, another torch, notebook, pen, roll of paracord, compass on zipper pull, waterproof matchcase with compass and occasionally a multitool and tobacco tin kit.

Some of these items double up on the contents of my trouser pockets so I guess that makes be a "belt and braces" type of guy, but I wouldn't feel right without them.

I do think OhCanada's idea of the heavy tinfoil for a container is great and I notice Tesco have started to sell a thicker kitchen foil in their "finest" range which seems up to the job. It's also a lot better for cooking wrapped food in the fire too.

I've now added some to my tobacco tin kit and my wallet.

Now that's going to be some list.... Let's see for Viking, my most regular gig, it's all on a belt, pouch and a satchel.

Small knife, pattern welded, whale tooth handle.
Steel striker, decorated with bronze fittings.
Bag containing flints, copper tube, linen, beeswax, sulphur matches. spare steels.
Tinder box containing Chared linen and flax tow.
Antler comb.
Antler and bronze whistle.
Wooden needle case, wrapped with linen thread, antler tweezers, bone, antler and bronze needles and pins.
Taabel game pouch and glass counters.
Purse with hack silver and coins.
Banded slate whetstone.
Marlin spike / fid (antler)
Large knife, pattern welded, bog oak handle.Folding scales.
Purse containing more silver and weights.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head but I'm sure there's more in the bottom of the satchel.

Well, there is so much in my handbag, that I have replaced it with a bloomin' satchel.
Most of it is unconnected with survival issues, unless it is possible to die from too little lipstick.

If I have pockets, I always carry a UKPK and a bic lighter. If not, they go into my bag, along with some paracord, a penlight torch, a titanium cup, and a mobile phone.

Compared to our ancestors, we have such an easy time, kit-wise.

So what do you have in your pockets at this moment and why?.... ;)

The 'normal' people survive BECAUSE of the people that DO carry the 'stuff'!

I don't usually carry anything in my pockets except maybe my car keys. :)

Now before you all wonder about me . . . that's because I keep all my EDC in my Maxpedtion Fatboy. Before that I used to keep it in other outdoor type "manbags".

Here's what's in it.

1. Sunglasses
2. Loose change, extra keys
3. Wallet
4. Pens & Pencil
5. SAK
6. Keys on rings with LED lights and glowring
7. Nokia handsfree kit
8. Calculator
9. NiteIze headband
10. NiteIze biting thingie (for holding your light in your mouth)
11. Modded MiniMag (1 wall LED)
12. Silva/Brunton lighter (I don't smoke)
13. Multi-Tool with hex bits
14. Keyring knife/tool
15. Phone with digital compass (I'm getting a GPS for this soon :) )
16. Glowring
17. Tissues
18. Ken Onion Vapor 1 (knife)
19. Notepad

Depending on the weather and circumstances the contents change a bit but that 's my basic everyday kit that I don't leave home without.

I started to carry the stuff I do because it's incredibly useful. Okay so I don't use my multi tool everyday but I do use it frequently, often in a situation I wasn't expecting.

I've been carrying stuff around for years now and in several countries. The only regrets I've ever had was when I didn't bring a SAK or torch with me.

I'm out a lot and this simple gear that doesn't take much effort to carry has been my salvation (and the salvation of others) on many occasions.

Other people don't carry useful gear because they don't think ahead and are not prepared for anything to happen outside of what they are expecting to happen. The thing is we never know what is going to happen, like an accident, change of plan, breakdown, extreme weather, etc.

Rite-in-Rain paper, Fisher spacepen refill.
Mirror, fresnel lens.
Tinder card.
Vic "Rambler" swiss army knife with blade, scissors, philips and flat screwdrivers, bottle opener, file, tweezers and toothpick.
Right pocket has:

Car and house keys.
2x1m parachord plaited into a fob.
Flint rod, striker, tinder wrapped in 3" plastic tube
Photon "Freedom" led light.
Fox-40 whistle.
Serbertool "M4" small multitool.
Paper clips and safety pins (fuel for the "M4").

SE P900 phone with novels, games, planetarium, web access etc.
Cheap cigarette lighter (I don't smoke).
My wris****ch is a Casio Sea Pathfinder, solar powered with compass and barometer.
And another pocket has a small tabacco-tin PSK, which I just included today so it probably doesn't count (normally it lives in a jacket pocket, but I don't wear a jacket indoors or in summer).

I notice I've reduced the size of a lot of my items and put them on my keyring now. The torch is now a tiny fob light type thing for example.

Other things have been shifted to my jacket pockets.

One definite change is that I've replaced my lighter with a small waterproof match case which I just find much more reliable.

Right this minute I have a SAK super tinker and a lucky sea bean that I got when I was a kid.

Oh, and plenty of fluff too.

What has it got in it's pocketses?

Hmm...

At work at the mo', so things tend to be hung on my belt
Left:
Marker pen, highlighter pen, rollerball, fountain pen. Mobile phone, handkerchief.
Right:
4-way valve key, CRKT M16 (for opening salt bags), dictaphone. Site key bunch, handkerchief. Wallet.
Belt:
Gerber multiplier, Tesco AA LED torch, site radio.

UKPK clipped inside collar of T shirt.

Outside work it's just UKPK, keys, wallet, phone. All the miscellaneous stuff lives in my EDC rucksack (referred to by the Management as my handbag:rolleyes: ) All sorts of stuff in there...

Unlike some literary characters, I at least try not to rush from the house without a pocket handkerchief. But today I even forgot that. About the only thing I manage to always have is the house key.

Actually, I never cared for carrying many things in my pockets, so I tend to load up my bag, which for everyday use going to work is a leather mapcase bought at a surplus store. It replace a nylon daypack of almost identical design but my lunch doesn't fit in the mapcase. I have a flashlight, wallet and, uh, that's about it, aside from a few papers. I've resisted the temptation to carry protractor, compass and topo maps of central Europe.

I tend to carry a lot more in the woods but even then, not in my pockets and tend to use very little things like knives, matches, and so on. I'm starting to follow the primitive line of thinking that is devoted to learning how to do without things as opposed to having all those things that you might need. Except for pocket handkerchiefs.

Wayland also mentioned how this stuff might become a bit of a "comfort blanket", and I have phases of carrying more and end up back with a stripped-down wallet with the front door key in it. Nothing else.

I have a 15L day pack that has all of the other stuff in it, so if I'm going out for a long walk I'll take that along. SAK, tissues and wipes, lip balm, mini compass, little pack of waterproof matches from rat pack. I always add a water bottle and I'll tend to throw in a drawing pad and camera. Only the water bottle takes up any space, so I take the same bag to the shops to avoid using carrier bags.

Always up for a game of marbles! It is my taw, the other one went missing when a child of mine helped themselves to it so I now keep it in an out of reach place. We played a game last night though, so it is still in my pocket from yesterday!

Since falling off my bike once and impalling my thigh with some keys I had in my pocket, I'm careful about what I put in my pockets. Only smooth rounded things.
