Hi agentx i mostly use the MOD knife but that would only be used for light work ,if i knew i was going to do some heavier work the axe would be more useful, its up to you really and what you feel comfortable using. This is my choice ,wait and see what others say.

i would honestly say knife as it has more applications than an axe (at least for a beginner, or so i have found anyway) and it is a lot easier to control as well when learning the basic cuts. IMHO i think a knife is more versatile and SAFER for beginners

If you have a belt knife and are looking for a hard duty chopper, then i'd go for an axe, as you belt knife is the way to learn cuts with a smaller nimble knife you can easly control and won't tire you out five mins after starting to carve, and the axe will be you bigger roughing out tool, felling wood, limbing fallen wood,

The MoD knife is a bit of a beast.
I'd get an axe, and a mora.
You can pick one up for less than a tenner and it'll do everything you need short of heavy chopping (which is why you have the axe).
It'll probably weigh the same, and be far more user friendly.

ive had my MoD knife for quite a few years and its done a good job of taking down small trees in the past (just need to get the hang of sharpening it), ive also got a couple of mora vikings which i think are nifty little knives, just not too sure on the plastic handles, i may try wrapping one with cord to see if its a better grip
