View Full Version : Rough Close Meet - September 2010.
Date: 24 - 26 September 2010.
Arrival time: from 17:00 on the 24th
Fees: I need to have all monies before 10am on the Sunday.
As per usual, we're on PC11  . At the moment there are people booked to use both the Guild Field and PC10.
As per usual, the location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/).
This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.
Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey scale (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf) map
Site fees are £4.40 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_2010.pdf) - Important! - please note that any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which is above the camping fees will be automatically considered to be a donation to Rough Close campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.
Following on from the ’Leave no Trace’ (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52806) thread and to try to pre-empt possible problems:
What follows is going to make the Meet (and site) seem to be very rule bound – in fact both are quite relaxed.
These rules are there because we, as a group, and the site have a reputation to maintain. Unfortunately the world is full of critics who love to point a finger – and we're there on the trust that we’ve worked hard to gain.
This list isn't exhaustive - common sense applies. If in doubt, Ask!
Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions at a Meet – if you bring along family (or a friend) then you also accept responsibility for them and their actions whilst they are on site.
Forum members under the age of 18 are welcome. However, they must be accompanied by at least one parent (or legal guardian).
You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee! The sites bin is the big orange thing in the campers car park.
Fees must be paid. It’s rare, but sometimes people forget.
Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited!
This is a scouting site and is not open to the general public - please don't walk through another groups pitch whilst drinking alcohol and/or smoking.
‘Appropriate’ behaviour: The site can, at any time, decline a booking – they can also ask* us (individually or wholly) to leave during the Meet. Be aware that other users of the site might be passing by our pitch at any time of the day or night – I do get feedback!
* i.e. Tell. The site is registered as educational land, there is neither a choice nor an ability to negotiate. Fees would still be owed!
Dropping kit off: The parking bay by the adjacent Guild Field is for the use of those who have booked the field (and/or cabin). If the field/cabin is booked for use then it is a requirement that permission is sought (and given) before you drive down.
Parking: Vehicles need to be parked up in the campers car park.
Fires: Open fires must be raised and contained. Periodically there is a shortage of wood available to burn - if you want to cook on an open fire bring a supply of wood or charcoal
Food: Unless organised prior to the Meet, you need to bring enough food to feed yourself while you are at the Meet.
Accidents do happen and people will try to help out where they can - If you are visiting someone else’s pitch do not expect to be fed.
Use the appropriate tools at the appropriate times.
It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.
The pitch is suitable for using tents, hammocks and bivvies - use what you have and are comfortable using. Even with 30+ using the pitch there is still ample room to bring/use one type and trial/experiment with another.
If you stick your name down and can no longer make it, please say so.
Please note that, on occassion, the first post will be edited to include better information. Although updates/edits will be posted in the thread, the first post needs to be re-read well in advance of the Meet
In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site(outstanding fees will still be owed)
The 'Touchy Subject' bit:
Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.
It's fine if you want to:
be on your own
lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over et.c
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that :lmao:
practice flora and fauna i.d
so on and so forth ...
This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.
Copy and paste etc.

:( Is it cause I have missed the last couple due to work?
Do you mean the red and blue bits - between the Meet List and the names?
The red bit is there so that no one at the Meet can't legitimately say 'Where did it say that?'
The blue bit's there because the red bit keeps getting edited out - I was typing it whilst you were posting. Until I'd posted I didn't know that you'd done the same as others. Call it incentive - you narrowly squeezed through before the 'donation' was added :lmao:

Hi Daz. All you need to do is turn up on PC11 and check in with Decorum to let him know you've arrived and settle up during the weekend.
If he's not available or around then just ask for one of the 'Old Hands' who'll advise you about where you can pitch and where all the facilities are.

As there are some travelling distances ... Taybarns (http://www.taybarns.com/[/url) might be a good place to stop for lunch. Good food, at a great price* - there's one just off the M6/M69/A46 junction.
* Just my opinion. I have no connection to the company

Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions at a Meet – if you bring along family (or a friend) then you also accept responsibility for them and their actions whilst they are on site.
I am very interested in going to this meet, if that's ok and what kit will i need ?
Andy2112

I am very interested in going to this meet, if that's ok and what kit will i need ?
Something to keep you dry, tarp or tent
sleeping bag
food/cutlery
something to cook on/in
Sense of humour, lol
Torch - this is a must, RC is like the black hole of Calcutta when the sun sets.
Basically normal camping gear mate, unless you use hammocks etc.

To add to the list given -
Wallet or trade goods/swaps to have fun trying to get more than just a bargain from my trades bag! :D
... what kit will i need ?
Andy pretty much covered the basics on kit.
Make sure that you read post #01 as it gives you a bit of an insight into Meets in general - a few are set up in the same sort of manner.
Something to sleep in, on and under:
You'll need bedding - sleeping bag, blanket(s), duvet etc.
You'll get a better nights kip if you have an insulating layer beneath you - the market is awash with sleeping mats.
Shelter - tent or tarp (some use a hammock).
Tarp tip1: If you're under a tarp you might like to consider using a ground sheet under your kit.
Tarp tip2: If you use a ground sheet under a tarp, make sure that it covers a smaller area than the tarp does.
Tarp tip3: Note which way the wind blows - and make sure that the wind can't blow rain into your kit.
Something to cook in and on:
Pots and pans suitable for cooking over what ever you're using as a heat source. We can have open fires - but they must be raised and contained. We have neighbours on both sides at this Meet and because of this I have previously suggested (to others) that it might be wise to bring a fuel supply just in case.
Matches/lighter etc
Something to eat:
Bring what you like to eat, that you know that you can cook with (and on) the items above.
Cutlery - full set or spork* (* if you'd like to wind Mr Fenna up )
Something to drink:
Tea, coffee etc.
The site isn't a dry one - but we ask that people keep it sensible.
There is no requirement to supply others. It would be wise to bring a suitable drinking vessel
Something to wear:
Wear what you like (providing that you observe the social niceties  - it's a scout site).
Spare clothes - it's a weekend, so you don't need a huge amount. But it's easy to get miserable if you get cold and/or wet.
Waterproofs are a good idea.
Boots are a sensible choice.
Insect repellent (at this time of year ;) )
Personal first aid kit.
Oh, and making sure that you're carring a good torch before it gets dark is a really good tip :yikes:

Hi dudes!!!
I joined this site some time ago, obviously because I have an interest in Bushcraft. Since then I have been busy having kids!!!
Am now gagging to get back into Bushcraft and need to find something in the local area...The 9-5 and TV is rotting my brain!!!
I've stumbled across this thread as I was looking for local groups in the area...I'm living just outside Coventry...SO can anyone give me a quick breakdown on what's going on...?! I see you have a 'meet' coming up pretty soon!
cheers
I see you have a 'meet' coming up pretty soon!
Yup, next weekend
... can anyone give me a quick breakdown on what's going on...?!
Basically, we're going camping in the woods ;) The best advice that I can give is have a read through this thread (esp. post #01) and then ask for any clarifications that you feel you need.
Sales/swaps/trades have been mentioned a few times in the thread, so I thought that I'd better add this bit  :lmao: ...
Sales/swaps/trades at this Meet are fine - usual forum rules apply.
Don't pester someone over a deal - a bit of haggling is fine, but a hard sell/swap/buy from either side of the deal is not acceptable!
Any deals are solely between those involved.EDIT:
EDIT:
There is no obligation to bring along, take away or become involved in any of the sales/swaps/trades unless you wish to do so.

A quick reminder ....
... By adding your name you acknowledge that you have read and will comply with post #01 of this thread and accept that it can (and probably will) be edited before the Meet. ...
So everyone will be aware of things like ...
If your fees are £8.80 and you give me a £20 note, then the site will be happy bunnies :grouphug:
Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited!
This is a scouting site and is not open to the general public - please don't walk through another groups pitch whilst drinking alcohol and/or smoking.
It is important to note that there are people using the Guild Field this w/e. There is also a group using PC. 10.
Basically, we are hemmed in :grouphug: - due to this it would help if folk could 'watch what they say and how they convey sentiments'
Dropping kit off: The parking bay by the adjacent Guild Field is for the use of those who have booked the field (and/or cabin). If the field/cabin is booked for use then it is a requirement that permission is sought (and given) before you drive down.
Re; Being hemmed in - make sure that you check and make absolutely sure that it's ok to drive down!

And, having read and inwardly digested post #01, everyone will also know that any and all fires need to be raised and contained ;)

:lmao: Date - arrival time - info --- all still up to date :lmao:
Meet List:
By adding your name you acknowledge that you have read and will comply with post #01 of this thread and accept that it can (and probably will) be edited before the Meet.

I seem to remember that you uttered the phrase 'It's going to rain tonight!' - and Sunday night/Monday morning (according to my weather search) was supposed to be the dry part of the w/e :bluThinki
Nope, see above :lmao:
Yup, the problem (again, as stated above) is that your parting shot was to tell us that it would rain overnight ;).
Ok, i'll hold my hands up, i confess, lol. I do believe there is a MkII TT somewhere lurking on the forum?!!!!!!

I just got back today - having been to the Outdoor Trade Show straight after the meet...
Thanks to Decorum for holding the meet and everyone there for making it so good!
Special thanks to JD for the mags that show me in action in ,87!
I also met more members at the show - thanks for the company.
I also got a few minutes of chat with Ray Mears - who was at the show to launch his involvement with 5:11 clothing (looking good - remembered me from way back, forgave me for slagging the Wilkie survival knife, is still into his canoeing, refused to invite me to visit his place to paddle the Birchbark canoe despite a hefty hint, talked a lot of good sence about clothing, accepted a flint and steel kit off me and signed a 5:11 poster for me) - and a few words with Simon King who was also interested in 5:11 kit.
Since I started wearing it the celebs seemed to have cottoned on to the gear...reverse celebrity endorsement? :)
Now I just have to get all the gear I picked up at the show tested and reviewed...including some more 5:11 kit!

On re-reading my post I can see that you could think it a plug ....but it aint one realy (no connection blah blah yadda) only an observation :)
As to newfangled ...cotton clothing, well designed and strongly made...can't call that a new concept - just an old one that too many manufacturers now ignore!
I was tempted to get a Ti Spork at the show - to ritually humiliate it by showing how inferior it is to a hand carved bit of kit! :)
But I felt sorry for it in the end and left it to be bought by a poor, unknowing, camper :D

John,

And you GAVE away a flint and steel, I was willing to pay cash, I only asked for a small discount. :puppy_dog

It is for whittling spoons from my detractors bones, Kuksas from their skulls and slicing their guts up for cordage!
