I made this for a guy on another forum.
Copy of a woodlore sheath but in slightly thicker leather and with a fire steel holder.

Tis nice indeed RB, your leatherwork is first class! Are they expensive to produce? ;)

Thanks mojo ,

i don't make them to make money it's really just to get experience.
I don't have a lot a free time at the moment and i find that leather work is very relaxing and totally clears my mind of real work.
Still have a lot to learn.

Very nice sheath RB however much it cost ;)

Buckshot your braiding is looking great, that shoulder strap and the multi colour effect are both brilliant.

Thanks Buckshot,
Just wondering what it's like to carry on a belt ?
I imagine it's a little restrictive as it can't move out of the way when you sit down.

i've got one of those sheaths and it's a pain to wear on the belt. on the plus side the knife is very secure as the belt feeds over the sheath.
i also wear mine on a baldric, as i find it more convenient and comfortable when wearing a rucksack

Buckshot
12-05-2005, 11:22
Yeah I'm sure it is RB. I use the other sheath when I want to carry it on my belt.
Here's a picture of the baldric in action...

You can just see the upper tassle tucked under the belt to stop the sheath falling forward when I bend over.

Buckshot that is some excellent braiding. I've been thinking about braiding a baldric myself for a bit.

So when's the tutorial gonna be ready? :D

Very clever ,i think i could get on very well with that sort of set up.
I have tried neck sheath's before and they always seem to be in my way but that looks very good.

Wow I'm liking the braiding.

And I'm liking the sheath too. What kind of leather does one use when making a sheath like that (ignoring colour)?

rapidboy

I use 3 - 3.5mm Shoulder

Thanks everyone for your comments, sorry to RB for highjacking the thread a bit ;)
I'm going to the May moot on the Monday (can't make the whole weekend I'm afraid) so if anyone wants a closer look track me down then. I'll be the one in green :D with a braided baldric neck sheath.

The tutorial has been written and now gone to the proof house for tweeking and spell checking. I'm hoping it wont be long now...

I had a few more Woodlore sheath's to make and i decided to make a few for myself.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/rapidboy1/knives/427_2727_1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/rapidboy1/knives/427_2743_1aa.jpg

I changed the profile a little on my own to make them a little less bulky.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/rapidboy1/knives/427_2739_1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/rapidboy1/knives/427_2735_1.jpg

I changed the stitch spacing on these to 5:1 because people seem to think the 7:1 I normally use looks like machine stitching :( .

Next is to start rescaling them ,when i have time  .

Any reason you don't wet form these other than the original isn't?

I have wet formed quite a few sheaths and i find that over time and with use they start to loosen a little.
My Alan Wood - Bushcrafter came with quite a nice wet formed sheath but it's now very loose and didn't really see a lot of use.
My original WS Woodlore sheath that holds the knife by friction didn't loosen to the same extent and still retains the knife well despite a lot of use.
I have made a few Woodlore sheaths as per the original design and they are all wearing well - like my original ,they soften up a little with use but all continue to hold the knives securely.
I do still wet form and i think a nice wet formed sheath looks great but I'm happier with a friction fit on a real user.
The other reason is that i recently realised that there can be quite a variation in the scale dimensions between Woodlore's and as im making most of these without having the actual knife that they will hold it's better to make them friction fit.

Hi Rapidboy,
I was just wondering how you go about acheiving the friction fit for a sheath? - Is it simply a matter of stitching it so that it's a tight fit to the handle, or is there some other technique?
I ask as I'm about to make a sheath for a bushcraft knife and I'm debating the best design to use.

cheers
Matt

By the way - hi! - first post on here.

By the way - hi! - first post on here.
Best to make a template Matt.
Use a strip of the leather you are going to use and fold it neatly around the knife until you get the sort of fit you want to achieve.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/rapidboy1/knives/427_2765_1.jpg

Then transfer this to paper and design your sheath around this measurement.

Getting a few small jobs tidied up at last.
I had planned to make a leather belt sheath for my Pack Pal from the start but the kydex one supplied turned out to be much better than i had expected so this has been sitting on my bench part finished for ages.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/rapidboy1/knives/427_2778_1.jpg

Again it's a friction fit rather than wet formed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/rapidboy1/knives/427_2787_1.jpg

I finished the stitching today and it's just been dyed so it will get a little lighter when it dries.

16-06-2005, 21:39
rb what dye do you use on the leather?

rapidboy
16-06-2005, 22:21
A product called Fiebings Professional Oil Dye.
To get a nice even finish you can wet the surface but i like to put it onto a dry surface to create a mottled effect.

WOW RB, You're getting better and better with those sheaths mate! (thumbs up smiley)
I prefer the sheath in post #36 - it looks more lively, robust and traditional because of the thicker thread that's used. But the one in #31 is great too :D

It's the first sheath for me. Something about the clean lines of it makes it very attractive.
Are you taking commissions at the moment RB?

Ahjno

RB,

Is the way to make a friction sheath the same as when making a wet formed sheath? (E.g. including a welt, adding grooves)? With being the only difference the latter wet formed when the sheath is allmost finished and the first mentioned (friction) the tight grip is achieved by wrapping the leather around the knife (handle)?

Working on a paper template for my Frost Mora Clipper at the moment :D

Cheers,

rapidboy
11-07-2005, 19:31
It's exactly the same.
When you wet form you are stretching the leather to be a perfect fit aroun dyour knife.
It looks good and for a while your knife will click into place but it will loosen up in the long term.
It's not a problem if you make the sheath deep enough to hold it securly and don't rely on just the wet forming to keep it in place .

(...) but it will loosen up in the long term. (...)

I've read about that in your previous posts.Want it to have a reasonble tight fit, and don't want it to loosen up in the long term.

Cheers for the fast reply!

You can make up a sheath in cardboard ,use a similar thickness to the leather your going to use and staple around the edges like stitching.
It will give you a better idea of what it's going to look like before you start cutting your expensive leather.

hi there!

i've just finished my handling my knife which is the same dimensions as the woodlore. now its time to make the sheath! i was wondering if anyone could help in the way of a template for a neck sheath, with the firesteel holder.

thanks!
