north wood meet 27th ~ 29th august '10

hi all, :)

thought id better post up a bit earlier than last time give people a chance to have a gander.
this meet were going back to the lower end of the wood, plenty of space for tree or ground dwellers, (see 'may' meet pics)
at the last outing in june we all had a cracking time with the bow drill thanks to martin, cliff and neil. :D
ok as before, just a reminder of terms and directions.

im sure i shouldnt have to mention good housekeeping to you, but im going to anyway. :(
were here on trial so it really is a case of leaving no junk / firescars etc. the only thing we should leave is a good impression, this is a private site, a farmer who i know and who has trusted me. im going to be blunt here, anyone who jeopardises this goodwill will be asked to leave. individual fires are allowed off the ground, there is plenty of windfall and some standing (usual precautions apply) live wood is to be left untouched. under 18s to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, guests or minors will be the responsibility of the person who bought them, a small section on the approach to north wood is sssi, this will be marked and out of bounds as will a small area adjacent to it which is personal to the farmer. ok happy head back on! :)

fees are a reasonable £4 per head per night, access on friday is from 1700, for security reasons the electronic gates will be closed overnight (i will find out times) location is opposite the belfry golf club on the A4091, map ref' SP19038 95694 (see 'wheres the path' website) for those arriving early there is a large layby opposite the entrance, (with a sit down burger van) which is 'middleton house farm'. full address is;

the fields on the approach to the wood are sometimes hired out to a private company. if on arrival there is any activity on the meadow between the car park and the wood, and you need to unload your vehicle, keep to the track, proceed with caution with hazards on at 15mph

Up for the navigation Cliff. How about a gypsy well? I'll be having a go at a few things for some skills practice.

got some spare compasses I can bring along if necessary, I should be able to get some maps of the area too (I will look into it tomorrow at work, I get really well with our Geo section)

Indian well sounds good too and other purification methods, some of the water in those ponds needs it :)

Got some maps of the area (15) with the wood being at the centre in 1:25k scale A1 size that should do us, got the compasses, also bring a few other things too, got your jerry can Steve, also got 2 left if anyone interested. Also got the norm of rats and stuff also might have some extras, got a bit of a clean up going on.

Can't wait for this one lads.

I've taken delivery of the 4.5x3m DD tarp so I might have the 3x3m decathlon up to use as a Communial tarp if needs be.

I'll sort my millbang bag as well and give that a wash and see if it can make clean water rather than the lucozade it made last time.

I've chucked the Etrex GPS in and will bring some spare batteries.

Deffo up for the roast on sunday just let me know what you guys need bringing. Or if anyone fancies an Addo Peach Cobbler I can bring the dutchy if anyone knows how to put one of them together for pudding?

I will be making up some webbing straps soon but I do not think they will be ready on time

Friday:
Any remaining rain clearing from southern counties to leave the rest of the day dry and bright, with most places seeing some sunshine. Staying fairly cool though, with northerly winds. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
A little rain on Sunday, though mainly light, but otherwise plenty of fine and dry weather with sunny periods. Chilly overnight in rural areas, but daytime temperatures close to normal.

OK guys starting to put stuff in a bag to bring will be some:

windproof trousers DPM,
tropic trousers,
desert trousers (all smaller than me size, can give you the military sizes if needed)
isulation material for making pot cosy/ small sit mats
loft insulation material for us with stoves and stuff
Machete
Big knife (not a very good one so going cheap/fre???)
Cylumes
First Feild dressings and First aid bit and bots
Rations normal and veggie
Bungees
old school poncho
cooking pots

and a few other things

just got back from north wood, wish i could've arrived a day earlier and left a day later but not to be.
had a great time in a lovely wood with some cracking company.

Thanks to all for a great meet and Steve especially for making it happen. Great presentation from Martin and Cliff on the Norway trip and it was great to go over map reading and navigation. Quality place for a weekend out, it had a faaantastic feel to it from the minute I arrived. Cheers all!
