Hello all! Just found this forum today, and had a good look around. Think I might be staying a while and adding my occassional 2p.

A bit about me? Well, I'm currently based in central London (lucky me...) but am originally from South Dorset on the edge of the New Forest. Most of my childhood was spent roaming local fields and the New Forest, and that forged a life long interest in outdoory 'things' and a long spell in the Scouts secured it. The ubiquitous Lofty Wiseman Survival Handbook became my bible when it first came out and minimalist camping became 'my thing'. Nowadays, I try to get out into the bush as often as possible, but an hour and a bit fighting my way out of London to get to the borders of the M25 ruins this on many occassions... However, I'm getting back into this in a big way this year, as I discovered a mate at work who is into the same things, so we have teamed up to force each other into getting out more! Nothing like a bit of encouragement to escape the city smoke-not that it's needed! I'm always at my happiest in the wilds, as no doubt many of you are, and have bought 20 acres of Catalunya (Northen Spain) which I am going to live on full time in about 2 years or so, to fulfill the River Cottage dream. So I'm trying to expand my knowledge of the UK wilderness and skills to the max before I leave and try to pick up new skills in Spain. To this effect, I believe this community will help greatly!

Thanks! Does anyone know of good, quiet woodland that's big enough to get away from people and traffic noise to the west of London? Have found a promising new haunt in the Chilterns, but you can cross it in no time at all! Looking for somewhere to practice bush skills and camp out without being disturbed that's a bit more local than Brecons or Dartmoor.....!

Welcome Spacemonkey,
I can't help thinking that the sprawl of the southeast will push you ever further from London - but I wish you all the best in you quest for suitable land.

Take it easy - But take it!
