View Full Version : 6ft 4ins and looking for a hammock
Hiya, looking for a hammock which will accomodate my all of my 15st & 6ft 4ins length.
I've been looking at DD Hamocks - specifically the Travel hammock which gives me the advantage of a bivvi bag, standard tarp and slip on cover.
Is this a bad idea or is there something longer or more comfy out there?

I had a dd travel hammock and it was plenty long enough, im 6'3'' and at the time of having it 16st 4lb, although now just use a nomadsland xxl great hammock and packs to nothing both would be no probs for your height.
I've got a DD, no issues with it with my 6ft 5 ins, though I was looking for another hammock this morning and came across these:

No experience with it and no info on here about them, but they look good, esp. the DLX one
I do have size 14 feet though...

Good info dude. I thought at 6'4" I would have no chance. (Size 15 shoes by the way).
Daughter just bought me a pair of crocs from the coast that sort of fit (can't have the back strap on though) marked as M size 13 or 45. Had given up on ever finding a pair of those either

That's about a UK 13 I think
No, there's only 1 difference, it's a 14. I have a pair of converse trainers here which are UK14, US 15! Either which way I'll let you know how I get on with the DD - I've just given it over for purchase (it's a birthday present from someone else) so around August I'll report back.

Careful with the Exped one - it's 2.15m long (unless their site is wrong) which is *way* too short for you.
The rule of thumb is that for a gathered-ends hammock, the comfortable length should be your height plus 2 feet.
So, for a 6ft 5in = 192cm (I think) plus 2 feet = 66cm ==> you are looking at a hammock about 2.40m - 2.50m long.
DD are OK (but I haven't used them), tenthWonder (on eBay) are also OK (I have used one for almost a year)

If thats the same as the MK group buy hammocks then they are much, much more roomier than the DD.

My mate is 6ft 4 and uses a Green Hornett Jungle hammock, bought from Tenth Wonder on Ebay.
I had a problem with the Travel Hammock because it doesn't breathe, it is completely waterproof both ways which meant I used to wake in the mornings with a damp sleeping bag. The only way I could think to stop this was to take a bivvy with me which rather defeats the object of the Travel Hammock, so I sold it in the end and got the Frontline Hammock instead and I find it much nicer.
Another vote for the Nomads Land XXL

bit confused over this comment - surely it's got a mozzie net on top which would let excess moisture out?

It's got a waterproof base mate, i've never had a problem with condensation though, depends how hot you sleep i think.
All sorted now! Bit of a palava in the end, but the decision was made for me.
I happen to be camping this weekend and it's gonna be a scorcher! So what better way than to use a hammock to camp in a lovely shady woodland setting. Since my birthday isn't for a couple of weeks, I'd resigned myself to waiting and camping this weekend. Popped into blacks thinking I might get one of their cheap rope hammocks and managed to get a member of staff who knew what he was talking about! Even though I've talked to them about hammocks before, they'd never mentioned they stocked proper camping hammocks and had a Hennesy explorer asym deluxe for £79.99 - plus my scout leader discount of 10% - total £72! Bargain!
So this weekend, instead of a DD I'll be living it up in a Hennesy, then perhaps maybe I'll get a bivvi bag - we'll see!
Setup wasn't as easy as I expected. I used the hennessy as someone who's never set up a hammock before and the instructions were a bit rubbish really. One of the trees I used I suspect was a bit thick, but I made the best I could and after a few false starts got it up off the floor.

Unfortunately the first night was a bit uncomfortable - I decided about 3am that my head was below the level of my feet (either it was slipping down the big oak at the head end or I'd just strung it wrong) and swivelled round so my head end was at the velcro end. I pretty much just dropped off after that, though I was awoken by inquisitive badgers who'd obviously never seen a hammock before but were more interested in the scouts ground based bashers.
2nd day I rehung the hammock so the foot end was on the giant oak and I slept like a baby. Still not sure exactly how a 6ft 4ins man can sleep asymetically in that hammock, it's not wide enough, but I managed.
My gear was in my berghaus bag on the floor, which has a silver rain cover. I'd also got waterproof stuff sacks from field and trek which have a handle clip which I strung on the webbing - that had my camera and clothes in.
I'd be interested in other Hennesy owners and how they rig their gear. I'll have to watch a few more vids on stringing hammocks - I had a hell of a time sorting that one out and I'm sure their must be easier ways to string and tension them.
