hi all, just to let you know, the site's http://chesterfielddistrictscouts.org .uk/?page_id=16 booked for friday june 11th - sunday june 13th.

the booking lady said that we were one of the best groups they've had on the site for a long timegoodjob, let's keep it that way.

Please take the time to read this post even if you’ve read the identical looking post in the rough close thread, this post has a few small but important differences, thanks.

This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome – unfortunately dogs aren’t.

Firearms (including air rifles, bows, catapults and anything else that fires a projectile) are prohibited at all times. If you turn up on site with any of the aforementioned you will be asked to leave.

Site fees are £2.50 per person per night - Important! - please note that any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which are above the camping fees will be automatically considered to be a donation to Spitewinter campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.

There are good toilet facilities including showers, the showers take a token (50pence for about three minutes iirc) so if anyone feels the need to wash over the course of the meet it would be best if you could let me know beforehand so that I can make sure that I get enough tokens in advance.

Following on from the ’Leave no Trace’ thread and to try to pre-empt possible problems:

Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions at a Meet – if you bring along family (or a friend) then you also accept responsibility for them and their actions whilst they are on site.

Forum members under the age of 18 are welcome. However, they must be accompanied by at least one parent (or legal guardian).

You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee! The sites bins are the wheelie bins by the main entrance.

Fees must be paid. It’s rare, but sometimes people forget.

Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited!

‘Appropriate’ behaviour: The site can, at any time, decline a booking – they can also ask* us (individually or wholly) to leave during the Meet. Be aware that the sight is surrounded by private farmland the owners of which are very aware of what’s happening on the campsite (there have been problems in the past with site users trespassing/vandalising farm land/buildings) and who do report back to the site owners regularly.

* i.e. Tell. The site is registered as educational land, there is neither a choice nor an ability to negotiate. Fees would still be owed!

Dropping kit off/parking – vehicular access is limited to a small car park by the entrance to the site – so you can’t pull right up to your pitch. Fortunately the site is only small so even if you wanted to pitch in the furthest corners from the car park you’d still only have 100yards at most to carry your kit. If anyone has concerns regarding the security of their vehicles I’m pretty sure that an arrangement could be made to lock the main gate overnight.

Fires – ground fires are not allowed – plain and simple, anyone found to be lighting ground fires will be asked to leave the site immediately. There are approximately 20 specific fire areas with raised concrete plinths spread around the site, these can be used for cooking fires, there is also a campfire circle in an amphitheatre kind of area, No cooking is allowed in the campfire circle. Some firewood is provided by the site but quantity and quality of wood is very variable, bringing your own fuel may be a good idea if you plan on cooking a lot.

Food - Unless organised prior to the Meet, you need to bring enough food to feed yourself while you are at the Meet.
Accidents do happen and people will try to help out where they can - If you are visiting someone elses pitch do not expect to be fed.

Use the appropriate tools at the appropriate times - mixing axes and low light levels is not a particularly wise move – chainsaws are prohibited at all times.

It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.

The pitch is suitable for using tents, hammocks and bivvies - use what you have and are comfortable using.

If you stick your name down and can no longer make it, please say so.

In the highly unlikely event that I need this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet.

Old hands

I’ve decided to adopt the idea of having “old hands” from rough close.

The idea is to improve and increase the chance of finding someone who can point you in the right direction. The right direction might be pointing you towards the water tap or toilets, to let you know that there may have been a better time to do what you're doing, taking camping fees if I'm not available etc.

The regulars who accept this role are doing so voluntarily and will make the choice to do so Meet by Meet. To aid identification, those regulars who have volunteered for the role at any particular Meet will have the title 'Old Hand' after their screen name in the Meet list for that Meet. The Old hands are also there to help me make sure that our reputation with Spitewinter remains as high as it is now - In effect the Old Hands will be Meet Mods.

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

It's fine if you want to:

be on your own
lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over etc.
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that
practice flora and fauna i.d
so on and so forth ...

This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.

Many thanks to Decorum for allowing me to re-cycle his work, it saved me much thought!:You_Rock_

I’ve decided to limit the numbers at this meet to 20. This is mainly because the first meet was pretty small and worked really well, it’s not a massive site to be honest.

Cheers

Stuart

just to let you all know, since the upgrade BCUK doesn't really work on my computer, i guess it's got bigger and my little mobile based internet connection just can't handle it, i might be entirely wrong and it might just be that my PC's rubbish but either way it means that i just can't get on here as often as i'd like to. the reason i'm telling you all this is that i really don't want you all to think that i've forgotten about the meet because i've not. it's still going ahead, everything's organised at my end, i just can't really help with any advice, won't really be able to answer any questions, sorry.

please don't be put off by my continued silence for the next few weeks, i'm not ignoring you, i've just been struck dumb by progress. i'll make sure that i get online once or twice before the meet, definately on the 10th if for no other reason than to see who's coming. if anyone has any real issues that they need to speak to me about then i believe that both Cliv and MartinK9 have my phone number, if your names on the list they're welcome to give it to you.

again, really sorry for any difficulties this may cause anyone,

cheers

not too long to go now chaps, looking forward to it already.

i was wondering if anyone had anything particular they wanted to get up to over the weekend? we did a bit of bow drill and plenty of cooking last time, anyone any thoughts? if it's a resounding no from everyone that's fine by me, i can sit and stare at the fire with the best of 'em, but you never no, someone might have a cracking idea for a project.

i've never done anything at all with lime (i don't think we get it round here) but isn't it supposed to be lovely to carve? if you've got any pieces that'd make some big spoons/noggins i wouldn't mind having a bit of a whittle

it can be a bit variable, last meet they'd just had some felling done on site so there was more firewood than we could possibly have needed, i don't know what'll be there this time though, it's pot luck really. i'd suggest that we'll be fine but it'd be nice to have a few crackle logs or similar just to be on the safe side.

no problem at all mate, bringing non-members is covered in the OP. i recently took a friend who was a non-memeber to the rough close meet, i got him to read through that thread before we went (especially decorum's OP) just so he had a good idea of what to expect and what would be expected of him, it made me more comfortable if nothing else.

I always have a sleeping bag, i find it a bit more adaptable than a blanket as you can have it as a full bag or open it out as a quilt.

I'd rather be to toasty than to cold.

Either mate. I use my artic bag and sometimes my snugpak quilt. underneath insulation is the key to not having a cold back and butt. Most of us use hammocks so just shout up if you get stuck. I'm still learning this hammocking lark.

Friday night - Steak and chips with a side salad (for all those health concious shrafters), maybe with a balsamic vinegar and honey dressing if i've time to knock one out.

Saturday AM - Mountainman Brekkie - inspired by Twodogs. (thanks Cliff)
PM - Curry made from scratch (meat to be decided) maybe with rice or naan ?
See here for curry http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42438&highlight=curry

Sounds good but we need to decide what we are doing, maybe give it a while till the others reply with their preferences. I've got a West Indian Goat curry recipe to try out one time soon.

Probably best if we all chip in to the total cost but if you've got say half dozen cooking onions then post up you'll bring em. We've just got to make sure we have all the ingredients.

We deffo need a BIG pot for the curry. I'm getting the spices sorted.

PS If folks don't want to do the group cookout but want to just cook for themselves then that's fine, it's not obligatory to join in here. (but i know all will, lol)

I think an ingredients list is in order

Andy 2112 - All spices for curry. Gratis, I'll stand the cost of these.

Be prepared to be fed by The Rough Close Naughty Corner !!!!!!!!!

This could get messy so i'll suggest i get all the stuff for the curry, we can divvy the cost out later, makes sense really. It'll be a chicken curry, is that ok with everyone? If some like a hot curry can i suggest you bring your own chillis and put them into your own portion ? it seemed to work better that way at RC.

This weekend was brilliant - learned loads of stuff, met new great people and generally had a marvelous time. There was a small but perfectly formed group of up to 9 people

(You will have to use your imagination as I can't get Tiny pic to upload (even one picture))

Particular thanks to Shaggystu for organising and MartinK9 for being Head Chef.

For those who have not been - and it was my first visit - Spitewinter is a small open site, next to a road; it is a scout campsite and we had it all to ourselves. It has excellent facilities - especially the shower and toilet block

Martin started us off well on Saturday morning with a big breakfast using his Dutch oven, which we all soon polished off. And Shaggystu made bannock with an improvised oven.

Ged supplied hot water from his ghilly kettle, whilst practicing his fire lighting.

Saturday evening Martin, with support especially from Tinkypete, again took charge and produced a fantastic leg of lamb meal with all the trimmings - absolutely delicious - and again from the Dutch oven.

We had some flying visits from Ratbag and his son Robert, and also from Addo. Addo brought his bow drill set with him and gave us a demonstration of firelighting which some even managed to repeat (give you one guess as to who couldn't.)

All in all a great weekend and even the weather was good as it only rained lightly during Saturday night, with sunny spells the rest of the time.

Thanks again to all concerned.

Ratbag
13-06-2010, 15:16
Well it might have been a flying visit but we had a great time! Thanks to everyone for their hospitality and to Martin in particular for the stew last night - I wish I'd brought a bigger plate with me cos Robert polished most of it off. He's been telling everyone today that he went "real camping", he's absolutely buzzing.

Hope we didn't disturb anyone this morning with our early departure, although from the snoring coming from various pits as we passed I would guess not :)

Cheers
