Hi folks,
I have been allowed to do a group buy for Bob Cartwright at Backpackinglight.co.uk for the 'Hive upgrade kit' for the Honey Stove.
Bob is doing this as a 'Thank you' to the Bushcraft community for all their positive support with The Honey Stove.
The Hive upgrade kit normally costs £12.99 but we can get it for £10 plus postage

It has been slightly longer getting it into production than I had hoped and it only arrived on Thursday, so the first email was to Sandbag to pass on a 'thank you' to the community.
I was hoping to do a BBQ on it tonight and video it, but it is raining so will have to wait. But there will something just as soon as I can.

am i mistaken or is it just a base plate with the 2 sides and bag etc, or do you get a 2nd plate for the top so you could place a billy can on it?

I wondered that as well Col, I think it's just the base plate bud
I think Bobs intentions are to use a pot big enough to span the whole gap.
I'm sure he could get some top plates knocked up though if there enough demand.

yeh, id go for that, i love my honey stove and this would allow me a giant cup of
tea in my giant billy can,
I think i will wait to see if he does a top plate then i will jump at it.

It crossed my mind too, I think I'll just use some tent pegs or similar through the top holes to hold the pot.
good idea Andy, but i can see a "2010 HIVE SPECIAL EDITION - ONLY 20 EVER MADE - TITANIUM PLATE, GOLD PLATED DOOR, GOLD LEAF ENGRAVED HOLDER BAG, WITH SIGNED CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY ON THE HORIZON.
You know its only a matter of time, this guy seems to like to play with his invensions and upgrade them, which is great cause its such a good simple product in the first place....

No there isn't a top plate with it guys as I wanted to keep the cost realistic.
I was quoted for some grills or plates, but the price just kept going up beyond what I wanted an upgrade to be. In the video (when i do it) you will see, as mentioned above, that pegs will do the job to support most smaller pans.
That said, I am waiting for a shipment of small grills on legs from the US, which will be ideal to work with it, and the retail price is much more acceptable.
We are all being cost conscious currently and I didn't want to take the mick making it more expensive than it needed to be.
Hope that answers the thoughts.

Yes please. I have only had my honey for a couple of months but I have not used any of my other stoves since I got it. Love the idea of making it a bit bigger for a BBQ, as I tried it in the standard one and there were not quite enough coals in it to do what I wanted.
Please add me to the list Sandbag. I'm in unless the postage is very high. I wonder if the grill from one of those disposable BBQs could be cut, using the new base-plate as a template, to fit on the top?

I don't see the lack of a top plate as a problem - I find (on the standard size HS) that tent pegs are actually better than the top plate as it is easier to add more fuel through the top than through the door (but if someone wants to tell be I have been doing it all wrong I wll be glad to learn)
??will we need to get some new supersized tent pegs (even if we do I'd still like to have the upgrade kit please)

Ok guys sorry to those who have to leave and to Mesquite for missing him out (sorry steve)
Ok i now have the the Hive that Bob has sent me so i will weigh it and let you all know in a day or so and the misses is going to wilkinsons to fined out the price of padded enverlopes for me.
Bob paid £2.06 for posting it to me and that is recorded at a guess i can't see it being more than £3 but i'm hoping it will be a little less.
Ok this is going really fast so i think i'll keep it going for about 2 weeks say till the 21st of May. So with that in mind can you please start sending me your details and i'll send payment details out in a day or so as soon as i have sorted out the total costs with postsage.
And i'll get some pics on here when the weather clears up :)

I have been in touch with Bob about paying him for the Hives. He told me he now has got folding grills that he originally wanted in the group buy but hadn't had them delivered.
Well he has them now in stock and would like to know if anyone would like them with thier Hive .

Get the hive upgrade out mate and do another GB for any takers of the grill.

No reflection on you Sandbag, as you've been a gent for doing this and being so accommodating, but if this goes to an added GB on the grill, then given the length of time it has taken people to decide they wanted and then pay up for the upgrade alone, then I think I'm off to buy the pair separately for the £3 postage from the website and perhaps get to use it before the Autumn!

It's a nice idea to add the grills but do it in a seperate group buy IMO unless they are like half price!!, It's getting complicated and you have already worked you A** off to get the upgrades sorted out, especially making posts at 4.00AM!

Sounds a fair point but i must say i thought this has been a quick GB ! I'm hoping to have it all finished in a couple of weeks at the most !!!!!!!
Not sure on postage for both yet but the cost for the grill is £5.50.
For anyone interested when i put the total costs on here , not hanging around with payments would be a big help.
if we move really fast we could be all done next week as i was hoping for in the first place.

not sure yet give me a day or so to find out...if i can get them both in the same envolope as a 'large letter' ..i'm guessing but i think it should'nt be anymore than £1.50 - £2 (hopefully less). on top of what you have already spent.

Just to keep everyone up to date, the Hives have been ordered and should be here early next week, so Sandbag should have them soon once the paperwork is done.
The timing of the grill arrival has messed up lots of things, not least the desire to give you guys a complete package as a thank you for all your support these last 12 months or more.
It wasn't my, or his, intention to confuse the issue with the grill. He should have one tomorrow to do his calculations and then decide the best way to proceed.
In the meantime I just wanted to say a big thanks and between us we are moving as fast as the group buy process will allow.

Ok guys I have just been to my local post office and weighed the grill and the hive together and they fit the 'large letter' (just). As i have said before the grill is £5.50 and the extra postage on top of what you have already paid is 50p.
So as you can guess it's going to cost you good folk £6 total.
Right i'm away playing army game this weekend so if you put a 'YES' or 'NO' next your name below over this weekend i'll order them next week and we can sort the money out after i have ordered them. You all have my payment details

I bought a hive kit along with the Honey stove a few weeks back, and hours of endless fun has been had since and am now getting used to being an Octopus when putting it together ! Anyway I see you chaps are going for the folding grill thingy...... I had a flash of inspiration last night and that was that if you had an extra Hive bottom plate you could stick it on the top as a cooking surface. I spoke to Rose this am who said she would put the idea forward to Bob. Grills are alright but I'm fond of thin sausages and get fed up with picking them out of the coals. I have found that those square stirfry wokky things full of holes works well !

Thanks for telling us that andy......I think there might be a bit of a problem feeding fuel if the base was used as a a cooking surface..Mind you if someone had brought three Hives they could have put the doors at different places around it and had a spare plate (and it would have been cheaper than a honey stove aswell).
3 hive kits joined as one.... ? Now that is lateral thinking & I like it.
No probs fuel wise !! I've found that 4 Pennbeads give about 40 mins of good cooking heat

Pennbeads are a compressed briquette, they are just about the only thing I can find that work in a Cobb ! On Friday night I got the Hive going and gently fed it all the blow down leaves from the garden, then some tree clippings (twigs) and stuck the beads on. When the cook up was finished a few discs of compressed sawdust provided a happy flame as the sun went down ! awwwwww bless

Mine also arrived safe and sound. Have assembled mine, with the extra three pieces it takes a little more patience. Fuel feed panel a very firm fit that may ease with use. Nice and stable when assembled. Overall a nice addition to the existing stove.

Is it my imagination of have they used slightly thicker metal on the extra side bits?
It's just they feel sturdier and thicker. Out of curiousity I weighed them and they're on average 3 grammes heavier than the equivalent honey stove panels I have already

Mine arrived this morning as well & as it was a beautiful day I went out for a walk to my favorite wood on the top of the South Downs to try out the hive. I found that getting the new door on is stiffer than the origibal one, this with the 2 new side pieces on either side of the new door. It's probably because the extra pieces make the angle wider so everuthing is a bit more under pressure than normal.
Anyway here are a few pics:

Glad you folks are getting them and enjoying the Hive. I'm getting hungry looking at those photos ;-)
Two things, the metal is the same as before .7mm stainless steel, so just as durable and will last you for years.
Secondly, as with the Honey Stove when the metal is first laser cut there is a 'coarseness' to the edge which makes it slightly stiff the first couple of times it is assembled. Therefore the new Hive pieces being attached to the 'old used Honey', will seem a bit stiff. However once the coarse edge has rubbed off, it'll be fine.
I haven't had time to add instructions for it, but the easiest way to assemble it I find, is to make up the 5 'old' sides first then place them on the ground. Then slot in the base plate, adding one panel to each side carefully. Then the door slots on easily enough.
It took us ages to get the new door grooves cut to the best shape for assembly, and this is by far better than the original door, which put too much pressure on the linking tabs.
The bonus for you guys is, with the extra Hive bits, you now have the ability to make up 2 square Trangia supports should you ever need them!

I love the idea of the coal's does it burn alot slower , as it goes through wood in no time .. whats the hive like
I used my hive upgrade at Spitewinter for the first time last weekend.
Main comments:
Overall very pleased I got it (and the rack).
assembly - not as difficult as had been led to believe by comments of others, but did use a small wooden batten when difficult to do solely by hand
bigger size means less need for constant feeding to keep it alight
bigger space means easier to light using a spark
good job I bought the rack as forgot to take a large tent peg or similar to rest pots on
need something - eg bricks or tent pegs - to hold rack down or likely to tip over - I had a brick windshield that saved my food/drink on more than one occasion
would be good to have a mod which gave a windshield - I have some thoughts but if anyone has a brainwave I'm sure we would all be interested
