Walking is not an option for me! I move at my own pace and a lot of you guys are going to be carrying a lot less "Iron" than me so I will be weighed down a fair bit. I also like to set a very sedate cruising pace myself. Some of you guys would make SAS selection... :p

Beeing a "newbie" to this whole bushcrafting thingie this meeting seems to be perfect to get started, meet new people and fondle kit :p

The area seems just wounderful...

And I even might be able to bring a carload of Stainless Steel Swedish Army Trangias with me :)

...just going over my kit list for the moot... can we/are we building cooking fires on site? Just thinking about de-scaling the Trangia and if I can put it off a little longer... ;)

There will be communal fires that you can cook on :) Also around the campsite you will find oil drum BBQ's that you can use.

:D

Oh God! I'll de-scale the Trangia then - no one should have to witness my cooking.. ;)

Might try a bit of long line fishing though - Porthcawl has resonable catch reports ;)

General Wayne :D Don't go over loading yourself with too much heavy metal, okay. I realised that I didn't get back to you about your suggested load of show-and-tell. I think that all those bowies are probably overkill! Most bushcraft types view anything over 4" as big, so if you have any good field knives say up to but not more than 7", that would probably be more interesting than 9"-12" choppers :D Also lighter to carry!! I suggested you bring slightly bigger knives than the standard 3-4"ers because I am sure there will be quite a range of "normal" size knives around that others people will bring. Just a thought.

tommywidenflycht, since selling gear won't be permitted, you probably won't need more than one or two trangias.

Michael,
Yup, it's a basic campsite in the woods... so no catering on site, no shop for miles.. and the estate would be most unhappy if you poached any of their pheasants so you're going to have to to carry it in!

I may have missed the answer to my question somewhere in amongst the 141 posts to this thread so far, if so, I apologise.

Is there any order to the activities i.e. workshops, walks, events etc that are going to be available/take place or have arrangements not been finalised yet?

The reason I ask is that I was wondering what I might be taking part in or watching whilst I'm there.

Stuart
10-07-2005, 10:15
many of the workshops have not been finalised yet but so far there will be workshops covering the following.

Forging with Pete bond

Flintknapping with John lord

sharpening

long bow making

leather sheath making

primitive deadfalls and snares

knots

cordage

fire by friction bowdrill and handrill (not yet finalised)

archery

Navigation without a compass

plant walk (not yet finalised)

Tracking (not yet finalised)

locating water on the dunes (not yet finalised)

there will be a library of bushcraft related books for you to browse, a hangi (underground pit) oven, and the estate to explore

OK I'm going to put this thread to bed, so it dosnt get confused with the summer Bushmoot in a few weeks time.

all the workshops (except flint knapping) are free, the timings will be sorted out on the day, if you have some suitable leather it would be appricated if you could bring it to save the costs for the person who has volunteered to run the workshop.

ooh what are you going to forge?

Forks & sporks was what I had in mind, but I'm open to suggestions.

I can use mild steel then, and demo things much faster, so people won't feel obliged to keep coming back to see where I've got to!

Stuart
12-07-2005, 14:18
you'll have to do at least one knife, its become a tradition, :D

Every Bush moot we eagerly anticipate your next edged creation!

what about one of those rail road spike axes you mentioned in the past? (not sure where we will get a rail road spike)

I'm currently trying to get my travel arrangements sorted for the moot, I have a ride to Myther Mawr on the Friday but at present my trip home on the Monday is looking a little sketchy. I would like to come home on Monday but if I have no option I’ll it will have to be Sunday, so what I’m asking is if any one in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Berkshire area or after that long list even the south east and can get me to within an hours drive of Aylesbury so my good lady wife can come and get me please can I have a ride home? I don’t mind sharing fuel costs and my rucksack is pretty small.

Yours hopefully

James

Would you have any use of a dozen or so of old files? They came with the house and are in pretty bad condition but I have heard that blacksmiths like to forge items out of them. I'll bring them to the bushmoot if you want them.

I think there is a file fairy about as we had about a dozen files with our house too.
We' l be there on Sat morning. Am bringing bits of leather (5mm 'm afraid), some steel and my first home made knife. if anybody wants some just hunt me down (be the one with a knakered landy and a look of bliss (and a confused partner in tow)

Jack PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you some pictures of the last BCUK moot back in May.

As to what happens, well you arrive meet some of the other members have a general chinwag about kit, the weather and learn a shed load of usefull stuff in the form of short workshops and from generally chatting to people.

on the last moot, there were a number of workshops from sheath making, working through trapping and snaring (legallity included), through to Jed showing people the flip flop winch.

Tony explains at the beggining of this thread (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/community/showthread.php?t=5589) what activities were going on at the last moot, there are also a number of pictures taken at the that moot in the thread :)

Files - old files in particular - are usually high carbon, so yes, they are *very* useful for anything requiring an edge.

I'd better make sure I bring plenty of propane!

If the weather continues like this I doubt the local river will have much water in it.. and I'm not sure of the practicality/legality of caneoing on it anyway. The estuary has quite powerful currents which make it a dodgy area. So I don't think canoeing wil be on the menu.

I will be arriving at Bridgend railway station (from Paddington station) on Friday 29th at 13.06 (1.06 pm)

Could anyone pick me up at any time from then onwards and give me a lift to camp?

That would be wonderful!

Also:

Things being so uncertain in London these days, I was wondering if anyone was driving from somewhere in the South West Greater London (I live betw. Croydon and Sutton) and would be willing to give me a lift all the way to the meetup.

I would of course contribute to petrol expense.

Thanks for your pms for any assistance

Yggdrasil :( Sorry mate, I already have two passengers, one from Aylesbury, and one needing to be returned to Market Harborough Leicestershire otherwise you would have been welcome.

I do hope you find someone!

At the rate that I have been having people from this area wanting or needing a lift it would almost be worth getting a minibus!!!

hi Womble.

i am not certain. Rob and i will not be doing any this meet up.

Stuart

unfortunatly Rob and Mel are unable to make this Bushmoot as they are in the process of moving house.

so the field shoots they normally organise with lifesize 3D tragets in the woods will not be going ahead this year :(

many people at the Bushmoot will be bringing and making bows so I expect that there will still be some archery going on though

sorry if this has been asked already (i did a search but didn't see anything)....

I was hoping to come up on Thursday night as I'm travelling from London and wanted to wake up there on Friday rather than in my dreary east london flat and then drive etc etc.

Anyway, is this going to be okay? I was thinking of leaving London about 3pm so I guess arriving about 6ish or later?

I'm looking forward to this one. Spring was great. Although it looks like it might be a wet one.

Cheers

Well, I guess it depends which way you are coming, but if you are driving passed Cardiff on the M4 I use:

Exit M4 at J35 take first exit for A473 to Bridgend
Down the dual carriage way, straight over the large round-about at the industrial estate.
Down some more dual carriage way
Straight across the next round-about with the A48, stay on the A473 heading due West.
Road is now single carriage way, straight over next small round about
Under railway bridge
At round about you can
A) carry on as if heading out of town, keep eyes left till you see what looks like a road or drive on the left that is blocked with great rocks, take next left (its quite close), single track road to offset crossroads/T-junction, and go right-then-left towards Merthyr Mawr
or
B) Turn south at roundabout onto B4265 to Ewenny, over railway, take first right just as you come into Ewenny, take next and only left before hitting the main road again!

If you can't follow the single track road all the way to the parking/camping area from there you really do need navigational help ;)
:D

To be honest, Merthyr Mawr is a lot easier to find to than Braziers is, as long as you don't go driving in circles around Bridgend... please don't ask!

Well I did ask that question as I would also have preferred to arrive on Thursday and I was told (by Stuart I think) people would only arrive on Friday. Which I took as meaning that our camp would only start on Friday.

I still hope you have a lovely journey whichever day it is!

I received 2 kind answers from 2 of you regarding picking me up from Bridgend railway station on Friday (my train arrives at 1.06 pm).

But neither answer was definite. So I start worryina bit as I don't have a clue how else I can reach our camp unless I get a lift there (don't know how costly the taxi would be and what to tell the taxi driver about destination).

Thanks for being of assistance and send me a pm with your reply!

Feel free to make me even more jealous than I am already by starting the "Excelent weekend" threads as soon as you get back.

If I cannot get a lift from Norfolk, I will also need to take a train. In regard to this, is there anybody who can pick me up from a train station? I need to do my research on the train stations in the vicinity. I'm hoping there is one near enough to walk from.

Current plan if I can get away is to come down to Bridgend by train (from Manchester) on Sat morning. Walk to the site and then have to go back the same way on Sunday. Bummer. But at least I may be able to get one night in. Oh, well better luck for the next one I suppose.

If I make it down it will be nice to put faces to the people on the site. If not hope you all have a great weekend.

If I can get away from work in time I'll pick you guys up from the station at 16.06 but since I work for the NHS I can't promise. I don't think it'll be hard to work out who's going to the moot. Just don't practise your axe skills or sharpen your knives at the station or you'll be meeting Heddlu De Cymru rather than BCUK.

Sorry guys,
Got up at 5:30 this morning to come an join you, headed to car and just as I was loading my pack into the boot a nose bleed starts. No big deal me thinks, I've had them ever since I can remember and it's nothing unusual when I've got a cold which I have, 10 minutes and I'll be on my way. Well, how wrong can you get! several hours later and it finally seems to have stopped, hadn't better sneeze though  Havn't had one like this for years.
Hope you guys are having fun but I think my nose is telling me it's not a bushcrafting weekend for me.
