Hi Guys I'm new to this sort of thing..Just found this site.. anyone got any tips or advice on how to get into bush craft chilli Phill
Any more details about what sort of things might happen at the w/e. Or that happened last year? I have no idea of the sort of weekend it was.
Also any more photos or details about the location. The link in the other thread comes up with an error for me.
Sounds interesting though so I am keeping weekend clear.
Thanks,
Take a look here at the old BCUK 2004 meetup thread about last years meetup at merthyr mawr.

That should give you some idea of what to expect.
:)

This is looking really good, there’s quite a few people that have come forward to volunteer their time to do workshops, both amateur and professionals, :D there’s some great stuff going on over the weekend…..Here’s a list, although it’s not finished…there may be some additions or subtractions…… ;)
Axe workshop – Axe skills and uses, safety etc
Bow Making – The idea is that we make some bows and get to use them!
Archery – We’ll have a good quantity of kit and some woodland.
Knife making – We’ll have forging demo and knife making (last year this was fantastic!)
Tracking Workshop
Friction Firelighting and other fire making
Wilderness First Aid
Foraging
Navigation
Snares and traps – What’s legal, safety and how to make them etc
Etc
There will be plenty of opportunity to carve spoons, ask advice, do what you want etc
The bottom line is that it’s your weekend, go to the workshops that you want to, share what you want to, wander off if you want to, it’s all up to you.
There’s a few people that are going to help with some kids activities and the site is very family friendly, last years was an excellent family event. :D
We’re going to have these yearly and build on them, they’re by the members an for the members….it’s fantastic and you guys deserve a huge thank you for making it possible…. ;)
Anyone that’s travelling by train etc let us know and we’ll sort out getting you picked up any time during the weekend, if you can’t get to it all just come for a day out. If anyone else has a question just ask it on here. I for one am looking forward to this, lots of friendships were made last year and there’s going to be more friends made this year…It’s what it’s all about! :D

Come to the meet up :D
Some canoeing has been added to the list of activities ;)
Can't wait... :D
If anyone needs picking up from Cardiff Central then i'd be happy to do so. Let me know and we'll see what i can do...
Cheers!
Jake,
If that lift is still up for grabs, I would be grateful.

I am confirmed! :D
Boss said... yeh, you can have those dates, or you will be a sod to work with won't ya? Bless him!
I am trying my best not to bring so much kit this year so please please please request items you want me to bring and activities you want me to demo.
I am hoping to do at least one knife sharpening class or more if the demand is there. I would also be up for a general discussion on knives and the industry in general if anyone was interested.
I would be happy to have a more 'formal' time and place for the above if required! Less excuse for me to sleep in! :o
My kids are really excited about going, they loved the last one in Wales.
I've been a 'lurker' on this site for ages and just wondered if, firstly, this is open to all (i.e. people like me that aren't regular contributors to the site) and also, how do I actually go about paying etc for the weekend?
Are spaces limited (how many people are expected)?
Thanks for the help. Great site btw. I've learnt so much here.
Thanks
Archibold Tuttle.
Hi archiet, good questions. ;)
Yes, this is open to all, as long as the people that come are there to enjoy the weekend and make friends! Last year we had quite a few people that were not members of bcuk and it was great to meet them and for them to join in and see what we’re about, so, bcuk members and non members are welcome. :D
There is no limit to the people we can accommodate, there’s quite a bit going on and we’ve also got the space for a huge amount of people.
You can paypal the money to shop@bushcraftuk.net or you can send me a cheque, PM me if you want to do this. For some it may be a very spur of the minute decision to come and if that’s the case it’s fine to pay when they arrive.
Another note I’ll add here is that the payment is for staying the night (ground rent) if people come for a day there will be no cost, unless we buy in some food for a big group meal or we loose a lot of arrows!! People don't have to come for the whole thing, caome to what you can.... :D
Thanks again for asking and I hope you can make it, it would be great to meet you and all the other that are going.
:)
Cheers
Archiet, if you enjyed the site - the bcuk meets.... they're great. Theres a huge amount going on at this one - ever wondered how to make a bow from scratch or what do shhh-you-know-who teach their trackers?
These are some of the things on offer, plus seeing every concievable bit of bushcraft kit imaginable and meeting some really great folks.
See ya there.
Neil
Sure thing Frogo, just as long as it's you alone! ;)
Sounds great Wayne!

Thanks Jake

Bardster, thank you very much for your kind offer. In the first place you should PM Tone.
Look forward to seeing you there :)
I'll see you all there at some point over the weekend. Looking forward to it already.
Fantastic stuff ;) it's going to be great to have you.
here's a quick note for all.
The moots are for everyone, singles, couples and families, there's something for all. There's no prerequisite to be able to teach something to others to be able to come, just come and relax, join in where you want to and take away from the weekend what you want.
See you there ;)

Will there be many knives for sale or on display? I am in the 'final days' of selecting my new knife and wonder if it worth holding out to view and chat over? Thanks.
There are likely to be plenty of knives on show from the members.... if there is a particular knife you want to look at, maybe post about it and see if someone who is comming has one to bring along.

Then I think you'll be in luck..... I've never been to a bushcraft meet where there hasn't been a couple of woodlores about (of both the Allan Wood and the Wilkinson Sword variety).... they are very popular.

There'll be stacks of kit for people to look at, I'll bring some hammocks for peopel to try out if they want, HH, Pods, Ray Mears etc....
let us know if there's anything in particular that people want to have a look at

I wanna see Woody's hammock in action!
Spring bcuk Meet - dates are 27th - 30th May (Friday, Sat, Sun, Monday)
Any questions post them on here or PM me :D
Hi Tony,
Is there a schedule/running order for events? What time can we get on site on the Friday? Is there a 'kicking out' time on Monday?
It sounds like its going to be hammock city that weekend
cheers
Friday from mid afternoon should be fine, you'll probably get roped into helping set up, as for Monday it will go most of the day with people leaving when they need to get to get home/miss the traffic etc
As for what and when during the weekend that will be organised closer to the date, and will probably shift a bit over the weekend as things work out. A lot of the people putting on workshops want to get involved in what other people are putting on so there will be a fair bit of playing ti by ear, which worked well at the last one....

i'm going to have a look at the leave book tonight when i'm at work. if i can get the time off (and a day each side to recover) i'll be there.
i'll probably take the train down as it'll be cheaper than driving so how easy is it to get from bridgend station to the site?

I'll be there, already booked the time off and the family are going too so no problem there.
Graham S,
The site is only a couple of miles away from the train station so shouldn't be a problem.

What are the rules for fires and stuff at this site? I am fairly new to the forum and havnt been to a meet before so am unaware of the protocols... I do dark age reenactment and in the living history village we are not allowed fire directly on the ground - usually because it is an archeologicaly sensitive site - and as such I have in my posetion a 1 metre square fire box that sits 8" off the ground - would it be advisable to bring this along? or do we all rely on stoves?
Cheers
not sure exactly what i'm letting myself in for but i think i'm going to book some time off for this too.
I want to come to this and ive never been to an event like this also never really camped out proplery, i asked Buckshot what he thinks i should bring ( i dont really have anything but i think i can get hold of most of this stuff ) so could anyone please add on to this...
Stuff to take:
Tent, sleeping kit, wash kit, change of clothes, food, cooker (if you want, there will be a comunial open fire to cook on), beer for the evenings around the campfire.
Is there anything else anyone can add please?
And one other thing, will i need to pack up all my stuff every morning and carry it around with me? or is it safe to leave it all there? do i need to bring a big rucksack to carry everything?
Thanks, and hope to see you all there :)

There’s a main fire area which is quite big, most of the fire stuff will go on there. If it’s not an inconvenience to you then it might be a good idea to bring the box, but it’s definitely not necessary. A lot of people will cook on stoves for convenience sake, but however you want really.

The list you’ve got sounds fine, there’s no need to bring a huge amount of stuff.
There will be no need to pack up any of your things, they can just stay in place for the whole weekend, so, no need for a huge rucksack. Cars can access the area to drop things off, but then they’ll get parked in the car area at a different location on the estate.

For those coming by train - "Goring and Streatley" is the nearest station, not Cholsey. Cholsey is nearest as the crow flies, but the wrong side of the river, so needs a big detour to get to it.
Is anyone coming upto hardening my knife blanks while we are there ??

Tone, is there any rough idea as to what days and times the things will happening?
~yggdrasil~
That's a hard one at the moment. I'll try and find out in more detail what the preference is of people that are doing things and get the info up. I know that Woody is doing tracking on Sunday, I expect that there will be bow making Sat and Sunday as we've got bamboo bows and flat bows being demonstrated and made, Archery will probably be done over a couple of days, as will the knife making and probably the canoeing.....
The thing about the meets is that people are happy to talk to you about all sorts of things at nearly any time, so if there's a question you have you can just arrange a time to talk to the person you want to, it works really well and people are incredibly generous with their time.
I'll see what I can sort out and post it on here.
;)
last time I did tracking with Woody (the woodlore instructor - yes?) he kept staring at me - apperantly I look like someone he knows...

The knifemaking will take a few hours, but not quite as many as last time as I'll be making a blacksmith-style knife (so I don't need to fit a handle!!!). Might make a spork too if there is time.

I am seriously considering coming to this; perhaps with the friend that I mentioned would be coming on my trip to the Lake District/Scotland.
I may be coming by train - I'll PM Tony if I know I am. Alternatively, Mum may drive me up. She seems, well not concerned exactly, but...sees it as a point to consider, that I will be camping with strangers.
Still, looks like I'll most likely be coming.

Mums are supposed to be concerned, that's their job (or one of them :) ), especially if you told her you are going to camp with some strangers you met on the net
But, it's not as if this lot are a bunch of axe weilding weirdos who have a pathogenic love of knives now is it? :D
It would be good to have you and your friend, your Mum is right to make coming to the event, a point to consider, it is a bunch of strangers!
If you can make it, fantastic, there will be loads to learn and talk about and you’ll have a great time. If you can’t make it, then no worries, there’s lots of opportunity for getting together with people that can help you along.

I can't imagine why parents should be concerned. Packing their youngster (no offense intended ;) ) off to camp rough in the middle of nowhere with 30+ knife and axe wielding pyromanic wool wearers :D
LOL. I dragged my mum along to the last meet in Wales, . I am 28 so my mum has almost stopped worrying about me  Though she wussed out of actually camping, she had a great time, got on well with everyone and came away saying that it was the most friendly and normal group of people that she had met in years.
Realistically, you are far better off camping at a meet with a load of strangers, than camping somewhere remote all by yourself. There is just a better class of strange people at bushcraft meets :D
Just been asked a good question...
Can we pay at the meet, same as last August? I'm hoping DSS will have actually given me some money by the meet (only been waitign THREE MONTHS.
Oh, and has the price been fixed?
BTW, will you Mum be there 'Hugh', (can't remember her name:eek: ). She was a GREAT laugh...

Well - they respect my freedom. She doesn't mind me going, actually she thinks it's great, but she wants to meet or talk to somebody in person. Dad's expressed an interest in coming anyway, so it's all dandy. Looks like my friend can't get the time off work, so he won't be coming.

Jak, no my mum isn't coming to this one, but I hope to get her in a tent for the July meet in Wales. I think that she really enjoyed walking the dunes, and with B&B as back up the odds are good :D
Never mind. Would have been good to meet her again.

For the elders that might still be reading this thread,
I've been mulling over the idea of making an appearance on saturday afternoon. Here's the hitch. I'll have worked the previous night in Reading, Berks, (so I won't be too far away, though I'll be dog tired!) and have a commitment to be in South Wales by saturday evening.
So is it worth calling in for just a few hours, say 1pm till 4ish, or would it be better to wait until another meet?
ATB
Ogri the trog
Ogri... it will be free for you as you're not there for the whole thing, so you're not going to loose anything by popping in and getting to meet a few of the folks and sitting in on anything that's of interest to you during that time. So, I'd say, come on by and get involved and then come to all the four days in July :D

Can't promise July though - it depends on the dreaded shifts...... and family......and animals.......and etc etc.

Sorry to ignore the previous two questions, but I just want to advertise something.
I live near Norwich, in Norfolk. I'm going with Dad, in a five-seater car. So, in theory, there's room for another three people (with not-excessive amounts of luggage). I'm already organising a lift with somebody, so there are one or two spaces free if anybody wants a lift and wants to share petrol costs, and who lives on the way to Reading.
We would be leaving Saturday Morning, and returning on Monday Afternoon.
Cheers.

Hi everyone.
I will be demonstration leather sheath making (waist belt) the demo is intended for anybody but is in particular aimed at beginners/ beginner knife makers.
The idea is to show the basic steps of marking out a pattern (paper) and transfering this to leather. Cutting out leather, forming and hand stitching. From there will go to dying the leather, to then apply leather finishes/preservers.
I am considering doing an introduction to knife making by stock removal. I dont want this to clash in any way with the forging demo because this will be as last year a very interesting and rewarding demo. If any of you guys would be interested in stock removal knife making methods for say 1 hours demo please let me know befor close of play on Thursday. The demo would just be a quick run through of the basic steps and would hopfully give folk a basic understanding Cheers

Alway positive, Tony :p.
About sheath making demos/courses - I would like to make a sheath for my Mora Frost knife 'cause the plastic one is a bit, ahem, rubbish. What kind of leather do I need to buy? I like the look of the one on this tutorial (http://www.britishblades.com/home/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=42).
I'm hoping there will be some socialisation around some camp fires, on the subject of meeting people.
I intend to learn some basics on wood carving, a bit about sheath making, fire...management and fire by friction, and how to sharpen knives :).
There'll be a few leatherworkers on hand over the weekend, ask away - with *some* of them it is difficult to stop them talking... :D
I can bring along a few different sharpening systems (Lansky/Spyderco/EdgePro, for example) and some stones so people can see what they get along with...
I'm going to need a 2nd bergen at this rate too!

Hiya
What's the earliest that we can start arriving Tony? I don't really want to be caught in the Reading afternoon rush hour traffic, and was hoping to turn up mid-afternoon-ish.
Mid afternoon will be fine. :D
Dean, shame mate, you'll still be there for most of it though!
Thanks Tony.
I intended to attend this weekend's meetup but am unfortunately down with some sort of flue/cold. So it's going to be an indoor wekend for the greatest part I am afraid...
But looking forward to the July/August meetup and to your newsabout how this May one on your return!
Kind Regards,

Ok thanks Tony ;) i guess ill see you all there. One other thing, is there gona be anywhere to get food or anything? Im gona bring food and stuff but this is my first time really camping and i duno if my food is gona cook ok or its gona be a disaster lol im sure i'll be fine but was just wondering. Hi tony .... .. every one, hope your all as well as can be expected!
and raring to goto the meet?.
Three thing's just flew past my mind;
1.What does the cost of entry cover you for(e.g. Do you get free knitting lesson or Workshop enrolment?).
2.Are there any toilet/showers or should I bring a spade?.
3.How do enrol for a workshop?.
SeeU@Dmeet.co
Ps Oh I just thought how much is the gate prices?.
A quick reply for you both!
No idea where the shops are, but I doubt they’re very far and someone will always pop down there if needed. I expect that people will share a bit as well. So, take some dosh just in case. I’ll have a few bcuk bits and bobs there like the last meet.
Cost of entry is for camping fees, all the workshops are free (only cost that there might be is a contribution towards arrows for the archery), there should no need to enrol in workshops, just go to the ones you’re interested in, yes there’s toilets (compost) and showers (woodburning) so no need for a spade and it’s £20 for everything.
Hope that covers it
I’m going to try to get there for about 6 pm, it’s a long way from up here! If people need picking up from the train station etc call and we’ll see what we can do.
Cheers

There are some shops about 10 mins away in the car, and I expect that there is a village shop a bit closer.
So far as the archery goes, we will just be running a donations box and asking participants to write their name in the book.
I will be the bloke standing by the back of my truck sticking new piles on the arrows, and trying not to glue myself to anything :D

Just got back. Everything Yggdrasil said :).
Thanks all - great weekend! Better than going on a bushcraft course anyday. I've got some photos of some of the courses etc. but they're all on a....forgotten the proper name now....a film-based camera. I'll have to wait for them to be developed then scan in the negatives but I'll put them up. Off the top of my head I know I've got some of the trapping course and the canoeing.

The carryings-on were just as good as other events I have been to, the demo's done very well!.
The "Sheath making using leather and wet-forming" excellent sir!, got me wanting to try myself.
Tracking demo was very popular alround and I liked the plant walk to, Stew "good" interesting demo.
The library tent was a good idea,
I must thank Gordon for helping me understand
how to do cordage!(thank's for the hotpot! steve(tasty)). But most of all I would like to thank eveyone who
made it possible for me to go canoeing, Mike+sue & kids(for the lifted there),
Richard(showing me about paddling) and tony for being instistent that I go.
Hope I can be at the next one.

It was an awesome weekend and good job by Tone and everyone did classes.
Great site, beautiful weather and great people......lovely to see everyone and make some new friends.
I got hooked on the field archery myself, and I think that there was a lot of that this weekend so much so that I think that there are enough people to get involved in starting up the BCUK Field Archery Club........

Hi,
Thanks to everyone that organised this event. it was my first bcuk thing. Looking forward to the next one.
I forget the name of the person that did the bow-making talk but I was wondering if it would be possible to find out the name of the book he mentioned using to make his bows.
Definitely up for giving that a go.
Cheers.
Hi all,
I would just like to reinforce what every one else is saying here and to thank Tony, Dave, Jed, Chris, Stuart and every one else involved in making the May Moot such a successful and enjoyable week-end. The atmosphere through out the week end was superb and the willingness for so many people to share their time and knowledge was commendable. I think particular praise should go to those that worked away in the background (whilst monitoring a small army of kids at the top of the hill!) that supported the main organisers and helped to keep things ticking along so well.
For me, it was good to put faces to so many names that regularly appear on the bcuk forum, the wealth of knowledge at hand was incredible and the friendliness of every one went to make it one of the most relaxing, sociable and informative weekends I can remember for a long while. I look forward to the next time we are all able to get together and hopefully seeing many more of you there,
Woody

The biggest of all possible thanks to Mel for sharing her archery skills with us and our children - they are all hooked and we will be looking for equipment in the coming months. Just thought I'd say that I've written a short (hmmm) piece on my experience at the spring-meet on my new blog (http://fatgerbil.kayssplace.com/blog/). It hasn't been configured fully yet and it's using the default template - so it's a bit basic, but the text is there.
Find it here (http://fatgerbil.kayssplace.com/blog/).
I would justy like to say that it was a pleasure meeting the people that I had not met before and it was very good to see those that I already new.
Thank you to Tony, Dave, Stuart, Jakunen, Woody, Bardster, Espy, Jed, Charlie, Ed, Rob, Wayne, Mel, Sam and Ivan amongst others for thier hard work on both organising and running workshops on the meet. If this was anything to go by then any meet will be more than worth going to :).
All the best to everyone that was there that I met (a very nice group of people) and long may it continue :)
Thankyou to everyone who came .... old faces and new alike...... you made it a fantastic weedend. I'll look forward to meeting up again with you all again sometime. :D

What a fantastic weekend. :D
The weather Gods were smiling, although they did get a bit enthusiastic as I’m peeling big time! :o The Site was lovely, although things getting blown down on Sat did add some excitement to the weekend! And the company, well, who could ask for more. A hundred people were there on Sat and had about 130 over the weekend, new faces and old, but all just as welcoming and willing to have a great time. I had many people come up to me to say that you were all a fantastic bunch, that they had been a bit apprehensive about coming but upon arrival all their apprehension had just faded away, that’s a compliment to you all. :)
Those that gave of their time are the real heroes of the weekend, they were amazingly selfless and happily spent time helping any anyone that enquired of them, so much went on that there was something for everyone, for all, it was a fantastic experience that was both educational and relaxed in just the right balance. To all of you that offered your time, equipment and expertise I take my hat off to you. Thank you.
A thank you to Braziers is also in order, it was a great site and the facilities were gratefully received! The wood burning showers were envied by many and I know that it was the best shower a few have had in a while! Dave and others put in a lot of effort to get the site sorted before the horde arrived, thanks to them we had a good site.
Thanks to you all for creating a great event, see you at the next one. ;)

Just a big huge thank you to everyone who helped out over the weekend, it was a great success. It was really nice to meet up with friends again and make new ones, there was a really happy atmosphere there. The kids all had a terrific time, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to Mel, Rob, Wayne and Val for their patience and long suffering going round and round the archery circuit with the kids, they all absolutely loved it, and your efforts were very much appreciated.
We are really looking forward to the next meet, and hope to enjoy many more!

You've probably been asked this one loads:
How much is it and how do i get tickets?
The last one was £20 for 3 days or so and we were allowed to pay on the gate, the previous summer one was payed for by PayPal, but Tony is probably a better person to answer this :)
Special thanks from me to Espy for showing his knife making craft....
You're quite welcome! The real question from me after the demo is - have I persuaded anyone else to have a go?
BTW - are there any decent photos of the finished knife around? Tony???!!

Train tickets booked! :D Bargain price of £29 return as well!!!! :)
Travelling down on the Friday, Chester station arriving 11:49, then Newport at 15:13, then Bridgend at 16:06 same as last year I think!
Leaving Monday Bridgend at 17:00 so I can rest easy on the Monday and not feel rushed to leave. :)
Accck Wish I could've made that one but was DJing a young ladies 18th birthday. No bookings for me next year I'll be leaving the whole weekend free :D
I'm in bloomin Canada for this one too !!! There's no justice I tell ya. I'll have to just have a quiet moment thinking about you all when i'm snuggled next to my fire under the mighty redwoods
That's it then, I've bought the ticket. All that remains is for me to tell the boss that he won't see me on the Friday!!
From what I've read of the Spring meet I think it's safe to say that we're in for a bloody good weekend.
See ya al there, if not before

Camping kit........ :D
If you have a camp stove then thats a good thing to have too. There will probably be a main fire that you can cook on, that worked at last summer's meet, but with more people it becomes a bit harder and a stove or some such is a good idea.
Don't forget some bog roll :D Though there are flush toilets, they probably won't have enough paper.

so, does anyone know for definate how to book a place
so, does anyone know for definate how to book a place
I do :D
If you'd like to pay via pay pal then give me a PM, I'm also happy for people to pay on the gate so to speak. I know that many like to pay up front to make sure that they can go, this also makes it easier for me as I know more about numbers.
The next ones will be much more organised when it comes to booking etc
I hope that helps
thanks, i'll try to get my dad to cough up tonight! How much is it again?

I am happy to pay on the day or send cash. As long as I don't have to use Paypal ;)
I'll most likely be using tarp & hammock (never been a big tent fan - in fact I don't own one!!).
Any ideas as to what or where I can store my kit safely, when I'm out and about seeing the sights etc (I'd rather not have to carry it around with me all weekend. Or will it be safe enough left wherever I set up my bed.
Appreciate your suggestions.
I'd like to say it's safe where you set up, there's no one else on the site except for us lot, so, there's no wandering strangers etc
I couldn't see anyone walking off with anything really mate, of course there is a chance, but i'd be willing to take the risk myself.
That's good enough for me, cheers guys.

Never heard of any problems (touch wood) with anythng going missing from the campsite (Would you want to risk it with all the knives, axes etc. that are going to be on display!!!!). I'm coming along and will be happy leaving my gear in my tent.
There have been a couple of thefts from cars recently - a rare occurrence. Steve the Estate manager is onto it and has passed the car reg. of onto the Police so that should be sorted soon. If there are not too many people we should be able to park vehicle in the campsite itself so this won't be a problem. If you are planning to visit on your own bear in mind that although the car park has somebody manning it during the day at weekends during the week it may be unattended. So if you are visiting don't leave valuables (money, eqpt. whatever) in your car. Common sense but you would be surprised how many people still do it.
Well as SWMBO and the kids will be at the Peak 2005 Guide and Scout camp me thinks a long weekend in S Wales sounds like a good idea! So barring unforseen disaster I'll be there.
Cheers
David
What an excellent decision Dave :D
I'll have my tent with me but also hammock and hoochie. Havn't got a clue how to set up the latter hope someone will be able to show me. The other thing that's be totally cool if anyone is up for it is to see how you moccasin makers did it.
Me I'm happy to takl knives and knife making with anyone who will listen!

Referencing my own post.... I dug out this old link http://www.ropeworks.biz/text/arch.html#DOWNLOAD
and printed them out to make my own book - some great useful knots
he also sells the complete book or CD
also http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/B_S_M/Contents.html

Hey Bard!
I've just been on your site - have to say you make some great gear!
I look forward to seeing your "satchel" possibles pouch at the meetup. :D
Neil
No guarantees just yet, but if I can get down (and I really am hoping I can!) I'm more than happy to run some kinda guided walks, pointing out edible, medicinal and generally useful plants. (with the obvious caveats that I'm not a professional or insured if you mishear me saying that eating hemlock is a good idea )
I'm also happy to help people getting set up with and improving bow drill technique - but I'm guessing there'll probably be enough people able to do this that it'll be a big collective workshop :D
Things I'd like to learn include better knife-sharpening technique, and a lot of knowledge from people who've all tried doing things different ways for everything bushcrafty - so I don't hve to! (still hunting for the 'ideal' hammock knots).
Now I just have to find that fine dividing line between packing a minimal kit to look like a proper bushcrafter but packing enough kit and equipment to look like, err, a proper bushcrafter
I am going with the family, minimal kit consists of a tent that could hold a circus, along with all the comforts! In my defence it is teh only way teh wife would go camping. :o

When you see me you'll think I'm out for a week. If I'm away more than a couple of nights I tend to use one of those british army bergens with the huuuuuuggge zip-on side pockets. It's handy being able to store all the essentials in the side pockets where they're easily accessible and everything else like sleeping bags/clothing etc in the main compatment. It looks huge but it's (usually) half empty :o

Don't worry Goose, I only live 5 miles away and I'll be doing the same!
I feel better now! Was half expecting everyone else to be living in debris shelters and using reindeer skins to sleep in :D
:D
The idea is to relax and enjoy yourself, which means you can take what you want to make yourself comfortable, no ones sitting in judgment. Tents, hammocks, on the ground, under a tarp.....whatever you fancy
one of the advantages of this is that people can see a range of different kit, get opinions on it etc, the main advantage though...you have a good weekend!
I was most impressed by the yurt, complete with cast iron woodburning stove, at the last meet. Good to see the range, from a tarp to effectively a small building...

from last years that seem's to give local roads,

yet I find asking around locally will normal produce good results!
Have fun people.
see you there.
Just so that the people that aren't from this area or aren't familiar with MM, can someone confirm that the main carpark is the place to be heading.
Sorry if I'm wrong but if I remember correctly I'm sure there are two two car parks at MM. Is that right?

Hiya guys and gals, It seems that quite a few of you are having problems finding the detail of the meetup. All of the info you require can be found by trawling this thread, the info seems a bit scattered I know :( and can be hard to find at times, but just to reiterate.....
Hi everyone, I thought I'd get the dates of the Summer meet up so that everyone knows when and where it is.
It's in the same place as last year for those that went and for those that didn't it's at Merthyr Mawr in South Wales.
The dates are July 29th to Aug 1st
Anyone is more than welcome to come for a day or for the whole period.
These meets are for everyone, no matter how involved you are in bushcraft, bring the family
The cost will be £20 an adult and £10 for 12-16 years and free below that. If you can just make a night or two it will be £7 a night.
You can just turn up and pay on the day, or if you want to use paypal you can pay in advance.
nomade-- the nearest train station is at Bridgend. Your best bet is to arrange a pickup with one of the members here.... there are a couple of people travelling down by train that have organised lifts from the station.....
Here is a map for those comming by car :)
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=288500&y=177500&z=3&sv=merthyr+mawr&st=3&tl=Merthyr+Mawr,+Bridgend+/+Pen-y-Bont+ar+Ogwr+[City/Town/Village]&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf

Yep... the main car park where steve the groundsman hangs out collecting car parking fees. Head for there. The private campite is through the gate to the left next to the car park gate. Don't be too worried.... we'll have it well sign posted so there should be no problems.
Hope this clears a few things up....... and see you there :D

you can arrive any time you like on the friday after 9:30am and most people will be leaving around lunch time on the monday
