OK, it's been a lil' while but we now have the next Meet dates :D ...

28 - 30 May 2010 and, once again, we're on PC11.

Unfortunately I couldn't book for us to stay until the Bank Holiday :o .

As per usual, the location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/).
This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.

Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey scale (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf) map

Site fees are £4.40 (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/RC_Price_List_2010.pdf) - Important! - please note that any monies given (by individuals, groups, families etc) which is above the camping fees will be automatically considered to be a donation to Rough Close campsite to aid with site maintenance, site regeneration etc.

Following on from the ’Leave no Trace’ (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52806) thread and to try to pre-empt possible problems:

What follows is going to make the Meet (and site) very rule bound - infact both are quite relaxed. These rules are there because we, as a group, and the site have a reputation to maintain. Unfortunately the world is full of critics who love to point a finger - and we're there on trust. The rules listed here aren't exhaustive - common sense applies!

Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions at a Meet – if you bring along family (or a friend) then you also accept responsibility for them and their actions whilst they are on site.

Forum members under the age of 18 are welcome. However, they must be accompanied by at least one parent (or legal guardian).

You brought it in, you take it out – camping fees do not include a rubbish collection fee! The sites bin is the big orange thing in the campers car park.

Fees must be paid. It’s rare, but sometimes people forget.

Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited!

‘Appropriate’ behaviour: The site can, at any time, decline a booking – they can also ask* us (individually or wholly) to leave during the Meet. Be aware that other users of the site might be passing by our pitch at any time of the day or night – I do get feedback!

* i.e. Tell. The site is registered as educational land, there is neither a choice nor an ability to negotiate. Fees would still be owed!

Dropping kit off - The parking bay by the adjacent Guild Field is for the use of those who have booked the field (and/or cabin). If the field/cabin is booked for use then it is a requirement that permission is sought (and given) before you drive down.
Oh. And please don't attempt to drive down the back track (:pokenest: Dave! :pokenest: :lmao:)

Parking - Vehicles need to be parked up in the campers car park.

Fires – Fire scars reduce the options of where and how we can pitch – ground fires can leave dips in the ground. All traces of where a fire has been need to be properly removed (not dumped elsewhere) and the ground left as close (or better) as possible to it’s natural state.

Food - Unless organised prior to the Meet, you need to bring enough food to feed yourself while you are at the Meet.
Accidents do happen and people will try to help out where they can - If you are visiting someone elses pitch do not expect to be fed.

Use the appropriate tools at the appropriate times - mixing axes and low light levels is not a particularly wise move.

It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.

The pitch is suitable for using tents, hammocks and bivvies - use what you have and are comfortable using. Even with 30+ using the pitch there is still ample room to bring/use one type and trial/experiment with another.

If you stick your name down and can no longer make it, please say so.

In the highly unlikely event that I need this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet.

EDIT:

Myself and some of the regulars to the Rough Close Meets are going to trial a new idea at this Meet.

The idea is to improve and increase the chance of finding someone who can point you in the right direction. The right direction might be pointing you towards the water tap or toilets, to let you know that there may have been a better time to do what you're doing, taking camping fees if I'm not available etc.

The regulars who accept this role are doing so voluntarily and will make the choice to do so Meet by Meet. To aid identification, those regulars who have volunteered for the role at any particular Meet will have the title 'Old Hand' after their screen name in the Meet list for that Meet. The Old hands are also there to help me make sure that our reputation with Rough Close remains as high as it is now - In effect the Old Hands will be Meet Mods.

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

It's fine if you want to:

be on your own
lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over et.c
whittle
practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that :lmao:
practice flora and fauna i.d
so on and so forth ...

This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.

i knew someone had some boots! this has been driving me slightly mad for a little while now, i clearly remember a fire, i (slightly less clearly) remember a few cans of bitter, some strawberry schnapps, and a little sloe gin, i have only the vaguest recollection of someone saying "new boots? i've got some new boots, what size are you?". and then i woke up and the sun seemed unusualy bright! 'twas a cracking weekend!

could you try and bring a pair of 8's and a pair of 9's please martin (i'm an eight'n'arf) what kind of things you looking for in trade? or what kind of cash value would you be looking at?

Nah, that hammock isn't hanging as per Andy's special pattern sleeping pod :o

For those not in the know I started calling Andy 'Twang Twang' after a bit of a wind-up.
It went like this ...

Be seeing you there then mate.:D You'll know which ones me because of all the swearing about putting my tarp and hammock up.

You'll be fine as long as you ... / ... don't use the 'T.T.T set-up' ...

Put me out my misery mate, what the T T T set up ?

The 'Twang - Twang - THUNK' set-up is what you can get if you rig your hammock up between trees which lean away from each other. The name comes from the noises heard as the straps slip, grip, slip again and is quickly followed by the sound of gravity being arrested by a sudden stop :D .

Unfortunately I seemed to have had a bit of a premonition :o :lmao:

... Invented a new sleep system, i'm calling it the ground dwelling hammock. lol. Closer trees or longer tapes i think for me. ...

CAN CAMBS CRASH AT YOUR PLACE PLEASE??
Can I request bringing some newby Cambridge guys as the meet over there has been cancelled! (double booked in the site diary!!).. I think it would do them good to see how it 'hangs' with the 'Midland Massive'!! I see the meet list isn't as large as March meet and hope you can accomodate!!..
I'll let you know numbers after I recieve PM's.. Shouldn't be more than 5 though..if ok! Sorry to gate crash, but there all very gutted it's cancelled at such short notice, what with booking time off as well, and there dying for some craft work, swaps and socialising bush chat!

decorum - sales - Some leather bits and pieces, also some misc bits and bobs.
Jimbo75 - sales - Beeswax candles, Bowsaw blades etc..
MartinK9 - sales -a few sets of new boots and DPM/Desert shirts and trousers

Whilst I'm sorting the lists ... I need to put in an order for leather stuff - is anyone after leather, accessories, tools etc? If you want something I need to know ASAP so that I can get it delivered in time for the Meet. Instead of cluttering this thread, enquiries for leather stuff should be done by P.M . This is for those coming to the Meet and isn't a general offer.

Hi Guys, hi decorum, can the 'Big Bad Wolf' Crafter come and play too? ...

Of course ;) . I hadn't noticed that it clashed until yesterday when I saw the cancellation. I was tempted to suggest in the Cambs thread that we might be a suitable alternative but decided to give it a while to see whether somewhere more local could be sorted.

... CAN CAMBS CRASH AT YOUR PLACE PLEASE?? ...

If there were 50 on our list, we'd find a way to make space round the fire :grouphug::camping: .

I have learned that hoping for any particular weather for a visit to RC is a waste - experience tells me that it'll do what it's going to do :bluThinki .

:27: And if we don't like what we get ... we blame it on Twang Twang :27:

Cheek :p, i've ordered you snow and high winds for the weekend Phil. :canoe::hatscarf:  There you go, cursed, lol

Un-ordered the bad weather on Saturday as i'll be paying you a visit. ;)

A natter between some of the Old Hands turned up a couple of things that we'd like to do at this Meet.

1. Gypsy Well*.
2. Natural shelter**.
3. Build a jerk rack.
4. Jerked meat***.

There are no promises that these activities will actually happen. If you're intersested in taking part in one or more of them talk to an Old Hand or, alternatively, keep your eyes/ears open for what's going on.

* There are provisos on digging a gypsy well - That:
there is only one,
it's located safely,
it's filled in before the end of the Meet

and ...

it's made with a digging stick.

** There is a specific area that we can take shelter material from. The shelter(s) must be dropped and left safe and tidy before the end of the Meet - any cordage used must be removed from the shelter(s).

*** If you want to eat some of the jerky bring some suitable meat to jerk.

it certainly wouldn't be the first time i'd tried, maybe you'd have better success than me, i just end up with scars, maybe i'm using the wrong kind of soot. now to work out the right place to start the thread..."which wood ash for primitive tattoos":lmao:

would it be ok if my mate tagged along to this meet? i don't think he's a member of the forums yet, but he was talking about joining so he could be already:confused: anyway, member or no, would i be ok to bring him along on friday/saturday (not sure when i'll be able to get there) for a night or two (don't know how long i'll be able to stay either!)

As long as I know it isn't a problem; it happens quite regularly  . It would help if you make sure that he knows your screen name - 'I'm ..... , shaggystu's mate' makes him identifyable to the rest of us.

Bringing along a non member (friend or family) is covered in this threads OP.

No events calendar (still :( ) - so I'll put this in here for the moment ...

As most of the regulars will know there tends to be a Meet every other month.
I'm aiming to book the next one for the w/e 16 - 18 July, there will then be one mid-ish September and that one will be followed by one held on the w/e of either 29th - 31st October or the 12th - 14th November 2010. The October and November weekends coincide with reenactment fairs - The International Living History Fair and The Original Reenactment Market respectively.

So, the forthcoming Meets should be ...

16 - 18 July

Mid September

and either

29th - 31st October* or the 12th - 14th November** 2010

* The International Living History Fair
** TORM - this is the more likely of the two.
