View Full Version : Rucksack Lid Elastic

Just picked up a second hand Berghaus Vulcan to use on my forthcoming travels.

Its in excellentay condition, all i can find is that the elastic around the rim of the lid is non-existent, so it looks like a big floppy tongue.

Is there a way i can easily replace the elastic? (in every picture of a vulcan i've seen the lid is elasticated)

Importantly i want to do it myself, as the prospect of paying for shipping two ways to someone else is fairly off-putting :D

Many thanks,

Ed

Either get some more of the same colour and stitch it on yourself or if it's a collar type affair with the elastic inside a tube, just get some more and rethread it.

Sounds fairly simple.

In my local area there are loads of chandleries which sell bungie or shock cord of various thicknesses and colours. Equally, climbing shops sell the same kind of stuff by the metre. Olive green can be harder to get hold of, but black is always common.

Try any of those keywords, or find a chandlery store (I use force 4) and browse around until you find the right section.

B&Q sell the stuff by the metre, usually by their chains etc. Good quality shock cord is what you want.

Looking at what's on the lid at the moment, it appears to be an elastic tape, rather than shock cord, stiched over both sides of the edge. Key difference being its a flat tape, about 2.5cm dia.

So would something like this work just as well?

If not, how would i attach shock cord?

Sorry for all the questions, my fabric skills are minimal at best :D

You could stitch on a narrow sleeve to replace the old one and then thread the new stuff through.

You have at least couple of options...

1. Leave it as is for that old sweat look
2. Contact Berghaus customer service and ask them if they can fix it i've always found them to be absolutely brilliant to deal with...
