View Full Version : north wood meet

hi all :) (continuing from 'possible new venue')
well i finally have some dates for our first meet at north wood, apart from being a bit too soon after the rough close meet the farmer still has a gas gun installed in the wood, and will have for a few weeks yet due to the plague of pigeons! so april is out.
the dates i have liased on are friday, saturday and sunday the 7th-8th and 9th of may.
as i mentioned in an earlier post, i have obtained permission to use a nearby toilet facility. we can also drive down to the wood to unload kit then park in the designated area, which incidentaly is where the standpipe is and the toilet block. all will become clear on arrival :D
im sure i shouldnt have to mention good housekeeping to you, but im going to anyway. :(
were here on trial so it really is a case of leaving no junk / firescars etc. the only thing we should leave is a good impression, this is a private site, a farmer who i know and who has trusted me. im going to be blunt here, anyone who jeopardises this goodwill will be asked to leave. individual fires are allowed off the ground, there is plenty of windfall and some standing (usual precautions apply) live wood is to be left untouched. under 18s to be accompanied by a parent or guardian, guests or minors will be the responsibility of the person who bought them, a small section on the approach to north wood is sssi, this will be marked and out of bounds as will a small area adjacent to it which is personal to the farmer. ok happy head back on! :)
fees are a reasonable £4 per head per night, access on friday is from 1700, for security reasons the electronic gates will be closed overnight (i will find out times) location is opposite the belfry golf club on the A4091, map ref' SP19038 95694 (see 'wheres the path' website) for those arriving early there is a large layby opposite the entrance, which is 'middleton house farm'.
well thats it for now, any questions just sing out :)

Just checked work schedule and it looks like I will be able to make the Saturday and Sunday and if I am lucky friday night but still awaiting confirmation on that one. :)
Cheers Steve for sorting this place for out for a meet it looks outstanding :)
Just out of interest, why is this a sticky ?
'cos it's easier to find :)
However, once the event is bye it will be unstickied.
I found it easier to do it this way when I organised the last big Scottish meet up. It just kept it obvious for a little while.
cheers,

Watcha fella,
I slept in it at the last meet and it was fantastic. I was massively impressed at how comfortable it was and had a great night sleep. Again many thanks.
I was planning on entering the May triathlon but with only a couple of weeks left there is no way I am going to be anywhere near ready so might as well celebrate that by having a night out in the woods with a great bunch of people.

It doesn't look far from Sandwell Valley and I know the locals throw crocodiles in there.

hi lindsey :)
location is opposite the belfry golf club on the A4091, map ref' SP19038 95694 (see 'wheres the path' website) for those arriving early there is a large layby opposite the entrance, which is 'middleton house farm'.
its just a mile or so from j9 of the m42, about 4miles from j4 of the m6 and the nearest railway stations are either coleshill or water orton both about 3 miles away.
incidentaly im sure anyone arriving by train could be collected, if no one offers ill do it myself! :)
Lindsey, try here (http://www.magic.gov.uk/website/magic/opener.htm?startTopic=maghabit at&xygridref=419343,295605&startScale=30000). If* I've done the linking properly then North Wood should be in the center of the grid.
* So I can remember later ... Link code was created by creating a book mark.

yes it was post 45 that made me stamp my feet lol! ( I'm a woman I can do that when I feel like it!)
motorway directions are no good at all as I'll be coming on the train, bus and foot. presumably I'd change at Birmingham , if I come it will be late Friday hopefully I can get a lift from the nearest station as it's about 3 miles away, but not confirming if I'm coming yet, depending on the weather I've found cold weather gear is too much for me to carry on public transport, I'm only a hobbit

Just a quick question.
What's the situation with parking?
woodspirits
26-04-2010, 19:49
parking is good plenty of room, it may be a good idea to fill any water containers you have prior to driving down to the wood to offload then return your vehicle to the car park next to the toilets and stand pipe. its about the same distance from your car as RC maybe a little bit more. hope this helps :)

Drew,
See Post 27 for an overview, The yellow map pins show the places mentioned below:
Follow the A4091 up past the Golf Course, the layby will be on the left and the Farm entrance on the right just past it.

Ya bad news for me, but if I miss her birthday I'll be sleeping rough for months to come. I'll still try to make it up for a night, just playing it by ear. If I can grab those bits at the next meet that would be great Dave! Have a gooder fellas!

hard luck sasquatch but missing the wifes bday as you said you would end up living rough for ever and by the way just to let you know that if it arrives in time from endicotts (the greatest army surpless store ever) i will be bringing a parachute so we can use it as a comunal area or not its up to you lot but like i say it all depends on royal mail.

I can't do much more than I already am! Never mind building up points, I'll be buried in them at this rate... a weekend of celebrations followed by a week in Spain?! I'm not complaining but when it's my birthday it's just another day! Men are from Mars and all that. The good thing is I find it hard to get out to meets in the summer normally so this should bode well in future. Should be able to see you all at the next one:)

Yes matey. I have got some carabiners that I want to set it up with so might need some advice on making that mod. I've got two tarps one being the decathalon one like yours and I have a sand DPM army one. I've not made my mind up which one to use. The army one is very heavy, smaller but looks more robust. I need to make a quick exit on sunday as I have to get home early to watch Mrs Boots in a triathlon. (love lyrca me.)
I'm having issues with the gear I am going to take. I seem to have loads of stuff but really wanna go basic this weekend. I'm trying to take just enough stuff for a comfortable weekend and a single carry into the wood. I was thinking of bringing the dutchee but again it's a lot of weight and makes for many journeys on the sunday breaking down camp.

Packed and sorted in garage and all I got to do is put in car and get up there. I may be able to pop along for Late Sat/Sunday morning to watch you all pack up , At least I'd get to see some people ( I'm sure the photo's don't do you justice ) but it's unlikely .
Anyway , This gives me more leverage for the RC meet so hopefully see you there .

Yup I made a mistake the first time I went to Rough Close. I had enough kit to sink a tank up to it's axles and the advice was to bring the lot so I did.
I've got a rucksack, toolbox and a chair and that's me lot this time.
I have to say the truck boot is going to resemble the store room of Endicotts though.

You could always leave some gear in your car Drew ? Just bring the essentials in your bergen. I've been through this recently and if i don't use the kit twice in succesion it either stays in the wagon or stays at home and that's including the 'what if' scenario as well. It worked out i can get away with a 40ltr patrol pack with 2x 10ltr side pockets, all i carry then is chair and water container. Try it mate, it worked for me.:D

hiya, just a reminder about those areas personal to the farmer.
im going to tie a bit of hazard tape to a something either side of these points, obviously these will be no go.
basically as you walk into the wood there will be a marker, a little further on the path forks, it doesnt matter which one you take its a perimeter path, once you pass a second marker your clear to pitch :) its only a small area im marking out still plenty of room. any doubt i will be pitched further down, just holler!

Yes please! You can practice on me whenever you want, but after seeing your first tattoo I know you don't need any practice :( Seriously though, if you're after putting some time in with a gun I'd be a willing subject!:D Now I'm really gutted I can't make it, I'd love to hear how you're getting on with it, my cousin inks but she lives in Canada. Bit far to go for free tatts...

lol shame I can't tattoo in the woods, I'd make a fortune. I'll have to learn the traditional hand tapping and charcoal technique. Bushcraft tattooing :-)

I've always fancied a true traditional tattoo Lindsey, maybe one day...it's certainly a tried and tested technique! It would have to be a Ray Mears logo though:yikes::pokenest:

thanks to you all, a great bunch of people in a lovely setting made for a good weekend. i was a little worried about my first meet here, but you guys exeeded my expectations and left it in good order, thank you.
although it wasnt entirely without mishap, eh rychard? should have used a sfa perhaps
it could have been a lot worse, once again a timely reminder that none of us, no matter how experienced, are immune to a sharps bite should we let our guard down.

Many thanks to Steve for organising a great meet in a beautiful bit of woodland. goodjob
How many Blue Bells? :lmao: A cracking site Steve - though I have to say that the 'walk' is a bit further than estimated :lmao: .
Better communication at my end could have seen me staying longer :o :pokenest: , but it was long enough for a much needed de-stress  .
