Hi all,

I am going to be at a meet soon and I was wondering what peoples ulimate or usual breakfast in the Bush is?

I have two that I really like, one healthier than the other.

I love rolled oats with fruit and berries with milk (the healthy option)

The unhealthier one is bacon wraps with mushrooms, sausages, tomatoes, bacon, thin banock bread (the wrap part) all of which can be cooked over an open fire without pots and pans, or can depending on mood and how I feel :)

So what your favourite and how do you do it?

I find pitta pockets are a good robust and long lasting bread altrenative that is great once packed with bacon and melted cheese! I prefer to have mine with a slice of good thick black coffee!

The ultimate breakfast is a full english cooked breakfast. Dry cured bacon, cumberland sausages, fresh mushrooms, fried bread, fresh eggs, black pudding, mushrooms, baked beans and served with HP sauce.

However, I usually make do with either sausage or bacon wraps with HP sauce

funnily enough i was thinking about that the other day and pm'd him for the recipe, yet to try it though maybe next weekend!

i like my porridge in the morning, easy to make and tasty although can be a bit messy to clean washed down with crusader full off tea or coffee.

peterlee_paddler and miyagii do mean breakfast fry ups :) I think Toddy is the best camp fire cook ive come across :D

First breakfast in one big cup:
Sweet milky porridge flavored with quite a bit of coffee

It hits the bases so you then get the fire going to get the second breakfast going, which is either full english, or staffy oatcake with cheese bacon mushroom filling.

Fried smoky bacon rashers
Fried eggs (over easy)
Fried mushrooms in (real) butter
Fresh wholemeal bread lightly toasted over the fire.

Freshly brewed coffee in a big thermal mug to wash it down.

There's something unbeatable about the taste of bacon and coffee when you are out in the open. For some reason it tastes so much better than at home.

Can't beat a proper full english :) If you want to make it into a 'bushy breakfast' then forget the mushrooms and substitute with a 3/8" slice from a nice big fresh giant puffball, fried in butter and used like a platter to put everything else on. Superb ! :)

I have a fry up in the fridge waiting for tomorrow's breakfast, but you lot are making me hungry.

The best sausages I ever had (and I love all sausages) were made with pork, beef and mustard seeds from a butcher in Falkirk.

Stooboy does a mean "exploding from the embers" egg wake up call I seem to remember.

Aye Tam, caffeine and nicotine!

These two are so vital first thing in the morning they should be reclassified as food groups in their own right.

chorizo does make a good starter in the morning, but salami is also good, just let the slices caramalize a little too and its extra tasty, Calibanzwei got me on the cooked brekkies with black pud, chorizo and scrambled egg. i also like my porridge tho, nowt beats a bit of porridge in the morning ;)
i'm curently looking for some dry cure bacon so i don't have to refrigerate it

Fruity bannock? That is not a breakfast for a real days work. Dice some bacon or fatback, mix up a pancake batter, put the meat in a skillet with some extra butter. Once it is half done pour in batter nd fry, turning once. Imagine a slightly crispy pancake, but with bacon in it. This was what the old time loggers lived on.

For a bannok you can carry along mix in the half done bacon with the batter and bake the bannok as usual. I sometimes make two; one for breakfast, and one for lunch. Perfect for a quick meal on the trail/in the canoe.

I have a one pan breakfast...

In a (largish) fryingpan, cook sausages, bacon and mushrooms...
Then add tin of beans / tin of tomatoes (whatever your preference is... once they are bubbling nicely make shallow bowl in the mixture and crack an egg (repeat this for however many eggs you wish to cook) leave the mixture for 5 mins, the egss will cook from the heat of the mixture and the frying pan.

Dish up and enjoy.....

PRKL, I'll need to have a go at making Stoke. That looks delicious.

I love Bratties (bratwurst). :D

Have you heard of an "Egg Banjo"?

It's a traditonal Army favourite. For anyone who hasn't heard of it use Google, as I can't do the explanation true justice.

SimonM does a great looking all-in-one fried breakfast in foil, one day I'll talk him into making me one.

Here you go Rich...

Use thick foil, with a double layer on the bottom.

On the foil place a layer of sliced potatoes (which are sacraficial if you leave it too long, but saute nicely if you get it right:D), then bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms.

If you make a "nest" from the sliced mushrooms, you can then crack an egg into it, stopping it from running everywhere.

Seal the pouch and drop it on the embers - I find that between 20 & 30 mins is enough, dependant on the bed of embers...

Once cooked, our scouts can slide the contents onto a piece of bread without dropping anything...another slice of bread on taop makes the perfect breakfast sarnie
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd178/simonandbev/Outdoor%20cookery/SDC14038.jpg

Or you could go down the griddle route...

Enjoy!

Just a light Autumn breakfast:

1. Smoked back bacon
2. Semi-wild hens eggs. (Not to be confused with shop-bought "free-range" variety.)
3. Sliced wild fungi.
4. Ten squirrel or rabbit kidneys.

5. Bannocks of the not too dumpy variety.

6. Coffee.

Cheers

The best breakfasts are of course made from leftovers from the night before, so in order. It will have to be homemade pizza with extra spicy sausages bacon and melted cheese. Or Spicy pork chops with beef and three bean stew. Lastly wok cooked peppered chicken with bell peppers and egged rice.
All washed down with black coffee made from Guatemala elephant Beans and Indian sugar crystals
Followed by a two hour snooze

You can cook them in their shells, but you need to put a wee hole in the end of the shell to let the pressure out.

Otherwise, they go BANG!!! :D

Upon reflection the best breakfast is one where the fried eggs don't take off down hill faster than a startled squirrel! And all because you either rushed the stove's setup or disturbed it when breaking the eggs!:o

I did put a small hole in the top, but i kinda turned it over to let the top of the egg cook a bit better, live and learn. good job the tarp was a bit back or could have been messy :)
