I had one (technically have I suppose) - a lot of space and it looks the part but the carrying system is not comfortable with anything other than light loads. the Side pockets are fine but are not PLCE zips. In short If I was paying pennies and using it to cart gear for a mile from the car to some woods then yeah why not, for anything else I would look for a surplus Vulcan - I did and its miles better.

I cant comment on the vulcan copy im afraid, but if your in dought you could consider an old Berghaus crusader. Plenty big enough, very comfy and bullet proof.
Ive two, and seen them on the bay for around £20. Side pouches arnt always available but plce pouches can be made to fit by swapping the zips with the ones on old army canvas gators.
Anything with a UK military design will be made to sit high on the back, over the webbing pouches and, so, in general are not made for comfort.

That's true of some PLCE packs but the genuine Vulcan fits like any conventional pack, with the waist strap right on the hips where it's meant to be. The same is true of the Lowe sting and saracen, also designed for the military. I think it only applies to actual UK issue packs, and not all of them. I have a PLCE longback that would fit anyone under 6'2" perfectly.
The crusader comes in at least three sizes of back length.
Ive a size Two which sits higher (and is shorter) than the 3 that I now use which is perfect on the hips with the belt for me. The vulcan has more padding on the back for comfort, and is a larger Litre size.
I dont think either were designed or issued often to the militery, just the personnel prefered them back then to the current issue, and bought them.

Endicotts (I think!) recently had a load of Vulcans that were ex-issue so it has certainly been issued at some point. And Berghaus made the original Bergens, hence the name.

The original Berghaus Roc and Crusader used the original Cyclops back 'system' came in 3 back lengths 1=short and 3= long
The Crusader was on issue to some units within 3cdo Brigade prior to the intro of PLCE.
The Vulcan uses the Cyclops II back 'system' and is available in 4 back lengths IIRC again 1=short 4=long

The Vulcan that endicotts have I think came from the Dutch forces I think the Dutch Korps Mariner ( Marines) used them. Now replaced by the Saracen I think.
The Berghaus name comes from the fact that when the company was being set up back in the late 60's a lot quality outdoor kit on the market came from Austria or Germany the Berghaus name ( loosely translated to Mountain house) was designed to capitalise on sounding Germanic and hence sound like quality.
