Hi again.

I have been using a 7" Leuku with a Lauri blade for a few years & fancied trying an 8" one to see how it compares.

I have had the blade for a while now & inally got round to doing something with it. Nothing fancy just a working tool to take a bashing.

I chose some seasoned Ash from my stock of axe handle materials.

The handle is whittled & unsanded, the tang has a good friction fit & needed hammering into place for the last 10mm.

Piened the tang & glued with "2 ton" epoxy...

The handle is a little longer than the one I own at around 13cm - adds even more punch when held with thumb & 2 fingers around the pomel.

I've started makinga sheath line out of an old plywood fruit box from the market.

Sheath to follow.

Well, after wrestling a rather thick bit of veg-tan leather the sheath is finished...

The stitching went rather badly in places along the back of the seam but doesn't show too much now.

Also the leather wouldn't accept the dye very well towards the tip on the front. I cleaned it thoroughly with meths first but...I guess it is the leather not grease etc.

Still, I'm fairly pleased with the results...

4mm veg-tan, oil based dye, carnauba wax & shellac on the inside.

I second that, I'm veritably green with envy.
Very nice work, particularly when it's paired up with it's partner.

Cheers, Alan.

Nice fit up, not easy to do. The copper bolster is a lot thicker than I imagined them to be. Beautiful leatherwork too:You_Rock_
Those big knives are interesting shape, like a small straight billhook.

Many thanks for the kind comments gentlemen.

hmmm, indeed. I love billhooks but I find a Leuku a bit more versatile - largely because it has no hook. Ok it can't be used to neatly cut saplings close to the ground on the up-stroke but it will prep veg & game, whittle a spoon, build a shelter, harvest & split firewood etc etc.

know what you mean about the "hook" part of a billhook-indispensable for some jobs, a nuisance in others. I am thinking of gettin a straight block bill style hook to refrub and try out. PS is it a fiinish Lauri blade?

Yeah, I'd do the same if I found one. The old faggot cutters are worth a look but real ones are scarce.

Finish indeed - made by Lauri. 3.2mm thick. Thicker than most but the high primary bevel & small secondary make for good penetration 'out of the box'.

LOL I have the remains of a badly abused (not by me) harrison hook. I thought I'd like to refashion it into a seax style blade to try that out. I see block bills on ebay from time to time

Wow, looks good ive got something similar in mind but it will not look as pro as that!

What type/thickness of leather is that?

That is 4mm raw veg-tan shoulders - I'd recomend something a bit thinner 2.5-3mm, it was tough as heck to wet form.
