This is a traditional knife called a Higonokami.

it opens up like this

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f272/Skylinec10/P1210029.jpg

Its made of laminated steel, of course.

Handmade, but a little rough, the body is just a U bend of brass.

Ill show it in action pretty soon

I've seen those in the Dick catalogue (http://www.dick.biz/dick/page/homepage/detail.jsf) and liked them, one question though.

When it closes does the edge of the blade contact the brass centre section of the folded U shape?

Nice looking knife.

Unopened I thought it was a cut throat razor (I have my late Grandfather's and only had the courage to use it once).

I have a Santoku, Deba, Usuba and Yanagiba Sashimi knife as part of my Chef's kit.

I don't loan them in the kitchen any more as I have too many colleagues with shortened finger tips now. Very sharp and slice effortlessy.

:)

Luckily for me, they were a gift from Japanese friends about ten years ago.

Everyone in Japan used to have one once. I think they are out of fashion now.

(Have the Japanese discovered SAKs?)

Very nice indeed. How long is that blade though? The Dick site says 80mm, which is a tiny touch too long for legal EDC

Could be fixed with a careful grinding.

Some cool stuff on that site. A few things that caught my eye:

Two inexpensive, plain-carbon EDC-legal folders:

http://www.dick.biz/dick/product/709043/detail.jsf

2" pattern-welded Japanese blade for €15. Drill with a cobalt bit in the right place and looks like it can be made into a pretty EDC-legal friction folder.

Lots of Japanese blade steels too, including pre-laminated billets. Also some mokume gane.
