View Full Version : Archery meet - near Wishaw - 11th April

Hi all.

So, anyone fancy an archery day?

Thought we could set up a couple of butts in the high field and a field course round the rest of the farm.
It's not a big holding(about 17 acres) but has plenty of scope for arrow related shenanigans. The bottom field has a good backstop for aerial targets, there's a (very)little wood and are plenty of ups and downs for variation even in the fields.

Targets will be whatever we can rustle up between us. Butts, bags full of bags, anything goes. Balloons, tennis balls, cardboard disks, plastic bottles..... I'm a big fan of trying to knock golf balls out the air so they'll likely make an appearance. There's a clout of sorts as well.
Ranges will be about 10-120m.
I'll try to keep the layout reasonably arrow-friendly.

Safety-wise:

Silliness should be kept to a minimum(bah:(). No shooting from moving vehicles. No turtle hunting(shooting straight up in the air). No wandering off on your own into areas where there are targets set up.

Everyone will be shown round the course and we'll work round it as a single group. There isn't enough space to set up a course that would be suitable for staggered groups.

There'll be a "safe path" down to the bottom field well away from shooting areas. It'll be shown on a map that'll stay up at the practice butts and I'll mark it out with barrier tape. Anyone arriving in-between rounds should follow that down or wait at the butts until the group returns. Please don't assume that we won't be doubling back and shooting back the way we've just walked because we probably will.

All other entrances will be blocked and signed.

This isn't a GNAS shoot. There's no insurance and even if you have your own I don't know if it'd be valid. We've had archery at well over a dozen scottish meets with no issues but this one will have more arrows flying about.
If the lack of insurance is a problem for you I can only suggest that you don't come. Hate saying that but it's the only solution I can think of.

Other info:

Parking may be an issue. There's parking for about four cars. Beyond that we'll have to park up the hill from where it isn't a long walk(or someone can run a shuttle in a 4wd). 4 wheel drives can come straight into the top field.
To be honest normal cars can get into the field too but I nearly had my exhaust off one day so I wouldn't recommend it.

We'll get the chute up and keep a fire ticking over if it's dreich.

There'll be a selection of bows available to borrow. I only have two suitable for southpaws but folk can always share.

I can give a couple of folk lifts from Glasgow. I'm sure others will happily do the same so if you don't have transport shout out and we'll see what can be done.

That about covers it I think but all ideas welcome.
:)

I've put this in the diary but can't say 100% I can make it.

If coming I can bring a couple of flatbows and recurve. Plus a butt and a big bag target.

Sounds like fun Josh, it's a bit close to Carol's birthday but pencil me in for now.

Sounds good, where is Wishaw though? Suspect it may be the other end of the country for me. Would love a day of bushcrafty shooting, with like minded people anyway.
A word of caution are you sure, despite the disclaimers above, that should god forbid anything go wrong, you and the land owner wouldn't be liable?

Shewie

I take it it's just a day thing Josh, no camping etc ?

I migt have to put the Pack on the roof and make a weekend of it though :)

Grooveski
21-01-2010, 21:13
There's a sturdays worth of fun to be had paddling the Clyde. :)

Camping? Yeah, obviously there's room to camp. I just don't know what you'd do with your car and feel safe about it. The farm bulding was burned down within a month of it being empty and we're in the same territory as JohnC's car was tanned so have little trust in the local kids.

Central belt of Scotland. About ten minutes off the M74 from the Hamilton exit.

....and no, I reckon that I'll be held liable for any mishap as the organiser but what are you supposed to do? Stop having fun?
I've shot with a lot of the folk who'll likely come at various other meets. Common sense is a good chunk of the safety factor and there's no shortage of common sense among the members here.

Would the week after suit you better?
...and you Rich?

I just plucked the date out the air, matters not a jot to me and it's easy enough to get a mod to change the date.

Looking at the calendar it's probably more likely we'll do something the weekend before tbh. I'll have words and let you know, might even bring her along for a trip

I have two compounds that are available Josh.
I fell nearly a fortnight ago, landed on my outstretched arm, and I have hurt my shoulder; really hurt it, and it's the one I tore muscles in years back too, so no way will I be up to shooting that weekend.
Happy to come along and keep the kettle boiling though :D

That's a drag Mary. Neck/shoulder/arm mishaps are my bane so I feel for you, they mess up everything.
It shouldn't be hard to put the chute up. There are a few likely branches to pop a fishing arrow over so it should just be a case of pinning it down.

Don't change it on my behalf, I can't even commit at this stage so whenever suits you best. If the weekend before suits shewie better that works equally as well for me too, and it means you don't have to bake me a cake... ;)

Can bring a longbow, a recurve and a butt (which is a bit tired now) I'm a leftie but the longbow is ambi...something :D

Alan

Date stands, 11th it is. :)

Hi Stuart
If no-one else takes you up could you pick me up and all the junk? That'd free up a parking space straight off.

Would you like some willow beasties Josh ? :D

Dharma, Fiona and I have been making willow structures, sheep, deer, birds, fishes.........they can be stuffed for targets. Takes time, but they're fun to make. Too big to take away from the site though.

Just an idea.

All sounds great but I don't think I'll able to make it up to Scotland, right now. Hope you all have a great shoot.
Has anyone ever thought about an archery area at the Moot?

I'd like to come along with my bows even if I am a relative new-comer to archery. I'm getting some professional tuition so should be up to speed by April. Will come in the Landie so access to the field should be fine. What's the view on youngsters ? - my lad is 12, very sensible and mad keen on archery

As much as I (really)like the idea, the only place to store them would be the remaining barn but leaving things that burn in there would just encourage the neds.

[Edit] Scottie reckons I bear a grudge against the locals because my first impressions of the place were during the arson phase. Should mention to folk wanting to camp that he lived there for donkeys years with no bother.

This'll be a laugh.
It's quite tricky dreaming up a safe arrow friendly course. The "safe path" down to the bottom field is looking less likely by the minute and folk are going to have to bring or borrow flu-flus for a few of the shots. I'll make a bunch up.

It dawned on me that I use a lot of feather. When I try other folks bows at meets they tend to be fast arrows and fast arrows go further when you get a flier.
The farm eats skinny carbons by the way.
If someone has a decent metal detector you may want to bring it along too.

Toddy
28-01-2010, 01:17
I've got one. It was supposed to be a decent one that I bought years ago in a Tandy sale. Russ and I had a go trying to find those big parachute pegs..........it works, sometimes
I'll pack it into the car and we'll see.

cheers.

another thread i missed, this why magikelly has been honing his bow skills then eh...

Grooveski
17-02-2010, 10:57
Oh, gloves! There are never enough to go round.

I've got about four if I can find them all but if you're planning on borrowing a bow and happen to have a pair of tightish fitting leather gloves bring them along, especially if you're left handed.(The only bows I have for lefties are a horsebow and a longbow, you use your hand as a rest and need a glove for your bow hand as well.)

Robby
17-02-2010, 19:55
Will my 30lb bows be up to the task?? Should I be worried about inadequacy issue??

Grooveski
17-02-2010, 20:32
Yeah, should be. That's reenactment weight isn't it?
I watched a crew doing a show at Warwick castle once and they were chucking arrows 100m or so. You might have to aim them a bit higher but they should make it the distance on all but maybe the uphill clout.

Depends more on how much feather you're using.
I've got some skinny alloys with tiny fletchings that might fly well out of a thirty pounder. Try them on the day and if they do they're yours. They came with a bow that they didn't suit so they're freebies and I have no use for them. 8 of them - look brand new.

Robby
18-02-2010, 00:39
oh wow, thanks. I've always wanted to try roving clout.I'm so looking forward to this.

I know I'm new on the site and I've also no archery experience (unless you count a day in butlins when I was 12 or a number of hours playing the kid at wii sports resort), but would it be OK if I tagged along??

If it is OK are there still lifts from Glasgow and the loan of a bow on offer??
(if all the spare bows are all gone, any recommendations on a good place to get a cheap but decent starter one?)

ta much

Grooveski
05-04-2010, 11:13
Aye, no bother. Don't worry about being new, I was only a few posts in the door when I went to my first meet too. :)

None of the bows have been bagsied. It'll be more a case of anyone who wants to borrow one trying a few out first. If folk have to share that'll not be a problem.
I've split some arrows into sets with wee bits of coloured tape.

Lift-wise, we'll sort something out. I'm not sure what my plans are at the moment as my back's still a bit shot but I'll get back to you later in the week.

Something I forgot to mention - Could everyone drive along the track at walking pace please. The chap in the wee bungalow is a touch protective of his little stretch and I wouldn't want to wind him up(any more than is unavoidable).
Also, could anyone who's not parking in the field and isn't carting a butt along please park up at the end of the housing estate to avoid driving back and forth along the track.

cheers bud,

looking forward to this :-D

also is the camping out still happening, should have my tarp and bivi bag by then & would feel better trying them out for the 1st time with some experienced people around to tell me if I've got the bivi inside out ;-)

Robby

splashed out and bought some sharps and a modern hip quiver. Iain bought some sharps as well but went for a back quiver. so we're all set. Marion had a go loosing a few long the drive and has got the bug, so might have another shooter/tryer. I'll be able to bring 3 bows definately, a longbow a recurve and a flatbow(all 30#) might also be able to get hold of a 60# longbow for the day as well.

Doesn't seem to be much call for it. Most folk seem happy enough with a days shooting which to be honest is all I was ever trying to arrange.

Know what you mean. Brought the bike back up the road at the weekend, the years in the barn haven't been kind to it and it's going to be eating time over the next couple of months.

Did you make it to the gig last night? I managed to get Scott and I tickets(:D) but the set over here is still weeks away.
