View Full Version : Karesuando Knife Kit Photo's Wanted
I've wanted to make a knife for ages, in fact my ultimate aim is to forge the blade and work from there - but first things first I'm going to buy a kit knife. I've never done one before and have settled on starting with the Karesuando Knife Kit. This, along with the SWC kit, is something that I think I can complete and use.
What I would like is a few photo's of the completed knives and sheaths to give me an idea of what I could achieve with this. I don't want to copy them, I would just like to know what can be achieved by people who know what they are doing.
Many thanks,
Craig.
here is my first attempt no great shakes

Here's my effort, and i do mean effort! in my defence the only tools i used in making it(as i dont have many) where a mod knife (rough shapeing) a army penknife(finer shapeing) and sand paper, plus borrowed a mates drill for the tang.

it was fun to do and if i got more tools id get another and try to make a better one.

You need a drill and sandpaper for the kinfe and some tape to protect the blade and a hacksaw to shorten the tang.
useful things to speed the process are
A vice or g clamps
Rasps and files to speed up the shaping
some needle files or a dremel to clean out the hole in the wood for the tang
To get the bolster to fit best do not widen the hole but thin most of the tang and nock the bolster on the last fem mil with hammer and a piece of wood.

Why shorten the tang?
Why shorten the tang?
Due to the depth of hole achieved but then again it depnds on the construcion of the knife and what tools you have and with limited tools it seasier to shorten the tang to about 50 mm into the last piece of the handle.
The knife in my second photo did not have the tang shortened
Cheers guys. This is really good. I can feel a project coming on...
