View Full Version : Midlands January 2010 Meet.

decorum
12-12-2009, 23:38
Meet dates: 15 - 16 - 17 January 2010 - 16:00hrs Friday evening to Sunday mid-afternoon.

We're booked, as per usual, onto pitch 11 (please refer to site map link below).

Location is Rough Close (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Home.ikml). This is a child friendly site and your youngsters are welcome.

Site map (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/p_Site_Map.ikml) and Grey Scale (http://www.roughclose.org.uk/attachments/GreyscaleRC.pdf) map.

The price (per person per night) is still listed on the website is £4. The price is set to rise in 2010 (I assume on the first of January  ) to £4.40 . Please bring some change - it makes my life easier if I don't have to bring kilos of coins to a Meet.

Important:

Please do not assume that you can drive down to the Wheatley (aka Guild) Field to drop kit off. Please walk down and check to see if anyone is using the cabin or field FIRST. The parking area by the Cabin is for the use of those using the Cabin and/or adjoining field - we get more ease of access with their agreement. Vehicles need to parked in the Campers Car Park next to the archery area.

Providing that it/they're dropped and left tidy, we have permission to go into an area* to harvest materials - natural shelters etc.

* It's a specific area that requires trimming on the basis of safety and site maintenance ~ and it (almost) backs onto pitch 11 .

All BcUK members are welcome at Meets - each member is responsible for themselves and their own actions. If you bring a non-member with you then you need to be willing to take responsibility for them (and their actions).

Please remember to respect other users of the site.

Any member who is under 18 must have a parent/legal guardian in attendance.

Meet list:

decorum

Copy and paste yada, yada ....

The 'Touchy Subject' bit:

Because the site is, first and foremost, a Scout camp site, the only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.

It's fine if you want to:

Be on your own
Lie on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over et.c
Whittle
Practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site can have strong opinions about that!
Practice flora and fauna i.d
So on and so forth ...

It's not a problem if you'd like to come along but aren't able to do both nights.

N.B.

This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.

At the last meet there was talk of having a gourmet theme for the next meet.

Shall we go for it? I'm happy doing a chilli for folks. I won't make it too hot though Lindsey might disagree with that http://www.freefever.com/animatedgifs/animated/smileys14.gif

About all I can bring to the table is some jalapeno corn bread, I noticed Hugh Fearnley did a batch on the last river cottage series, mine tends to rise a bit more than his but looks very similar. Tastes nice and sticks to the ribs in winter. Only problem is I don't own any dutch ovens or anything useful for cooking in volume! I'll see what I can rustle up if anybody fancys some...

If anyone's feeling pedagogic I'd really appreciate some tips on tying a ridgeline for a tarp - I've been working on my Evenk hitch which seems to be OK for one end, but I'm struggling to tie of t'other end while keeping the tension on the ridgeline... if anyone's mastered Cobweb's powercinch I'd love a demo, or any other solutions :)

Hello all. I know this is cheeky but there's a link to an axe at Argos on for £2.99, none in stock anywhere in my area. Address here;

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7001545.htm

I'm desperate for one of these, if anyone is already planning on getting one and they have an extra in stock could you please grab me one! If you can get an extra one and bring it to the meet for me I'd really appreciate it as this is about all I can afford at the minute...I'd be happy to throw in something bushcrafty as well as the £2.99 in return if anyone is getting one! Thanks in advance to anyone that can source one, no worries if not though! I feel a right toerag for asking but it's worth a shot.

If your Troop/District/County was actively scouting you should do fine - it's amazing just how quickly old skills can come back :D .

Anything particular I need to bring along kitwise (i'm bound to forget something anyway), and is food individual or communal mess?

Kit wise a shelter of some sort (tarp & bivi bag, hammock and tarp or tent) sleeping bag. A decent torch as it does get dark at RC and some folks have been known to have got lost  as they walk back to their pitch. Something to mark your pitch in the night is good, some folks use these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/100-X-6-GLOW-STICKS-FOIL-WRAPPED-CORDS-FESTIVALS_W0QQitemZ12046296945 2QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_WSJL_Wh olesale_GL?hash=item1c0c270a6c )

For extra comfort a folding chair is very handy for sitting round the fire at night. An essential is warming juices  to help the time round the fire even smoother :D

As for food there's going to be a communal cooking mainly for the saturday menu so far

Communal menu:

Mesquite - Chilli
Sasquatch - jalapeno corn bread
Twodogs - Beef and mushroom curry, naans, chapatis and rice
Addo -Peach cobbler with full fat custard (is that ok Addo?)
NLW - I'll come up with something...

But if you don't fancy the communal then just do your own thing.. no one will mind at all :)

As for forgetting something don't worry, a lot of us bring extra/spare kit so we ought to be able to help you out. Equally if you don't have something do shout and no doubt someone will lend you that bit :)

You'll suprise yourself  . You'll (probably*) remember things that you haven't thought about for a couple of decades - bushcraft and scout campcraft have a lot in common.

* hedging my bets here :lmao: .

... Anything particular I need to bring along kitwise (i'm bound to forget something anyway)

Mesquite's pretty much covered the kit side - one stumbling block that many befall is not having enough insulation; by day as well as over night.
Away from the communal fire you'll either need some sort of stove or, alternatively, a set up that keeps a wood fire off of the ground.

Twodogs - Beef and mushroom curry, naans, chapatis and rice

NLW - I'll come up with something...

It might be a good idea if those who are listed above get their heads together so that no one is left out of pocket (It's happened before ) .

A quick note for those new to Meets and/or communal menus:

Those who want to enjoy the benefits of the communal menu need to pay their way. The cost of the food is not included in the camping fees.

With just less than two weeks to go I'm adding a Trades/Sales list. Since I mentioned the possibility of having a smock up for sale I've had a bit of time to have a think :stretcher: - other than the afore mentioned smock, I'll not reserved any item I list. I'd prefer that others to do the same - but personal choice :neo2:  .

Sales/Trades list:

decorum - Self dyed (olive) Swedish snow smock - used - Large - £10 (reserved for sizing check - could still be available) - will be re-nikwaxed before the Meet.

decorum - 1 pint (or half litre :dunno:) used - kelly kettle - £20

N.B:

Any trades or sales are to be conducted in line with the relevant BcUK guidelines (expanded to include Rough Close campsite and myself when I'm not party to the sale and/or trade :pokenest: ) .
To add yourself to the list you need to include your screen name, a brief and honest description of the item (plus link if applicable), condition - new or used and the sale price. If you're willing to trade or a combination sale/trade that would be worth mentioning as well.

Please remember that real life can, on occassion, get in the way. There is no guarantee that someone who lists something will actually get to the Meet - or remember to bring the item(s).
Interested parties are free to walk away and sellers/traders are free to sell to whoever they wish. Pay/trade what you are willing to pay/trade and equally, accept what you are willing to accept - please do not try to hard sell or pester for a lower price/lesser trade.

Mesquite's pretty much covered the kit side - one stumbling block that many befall is not having enough insulation; by day as well as over night.

Away from the communal fire you'll either need some sort of stove or, alternatively, a set up that keeps a wood fire off of the ground.

That reminds me if you bring a chair bring some insulation for that as well It's suprising just how much heat you loose through the bottom and back. I used a silver backed rollmat at the Herts meet where there was 8" of snow on the ground and it was great, no cold bum or anything :)

It is the one litre water bottle containing sterile water. I think probably the bottle is more useful than the contents as they are graduated on the back.

As far as I know the tap will be available - wheather the water has frozen in the pipe ...

Failing that, there is the likelyhood that the snow will still be around - it's snowing as I type - for a bit of bushy water collection  .

Dec is alluding to the fact that I seem to always be present when there is 'extreme' weather at meets.

So far my count goes one heavily flooded meet, one subjected to heavy downpours, another one that was pelted with hailstorms and the last one where there was 8" of snow. That's not counting other meets where it was just simply rainy :D:D

We've had an inch or so of snow (so far). Prior to that, in the past few days, we've had rain and a thaw - under the snow it could be frozen or squishy :dunno: .
I know, that doesn't help much :o - however I did find, at the w/e, that the paths which are normally 'damp' (and rutted) around PC11 were still squishy - but they oozed a lot less when stood on/in.

Ok nearly packed, threw away the horrific three month old cheese I found in the bag, and soaking the not-been-washed-for-three-months pots to get the fur off them. Id like to say this isnt a regular occurance with my kit, but Im afraid it is :P

Anyway, I forgot to add my cousin to the list. I thought we were short of women folk.

Good luck to the guys venturing up there tonight. The rain is pretty heavy here at the moment and looks set to stay all day.

Never mind the Wendys - Shirley, you just make sure the furnace is going by mid morning!

And if you get 5 minutes dropping a few metres of duck board to the camp would be a nice touch.

Thanks to all those who came along, another chilled Meet. It isn't often that you get all four seasons in a weekend :lmao: .

I didn't take many pics over the weekend - and those I did take seem to show Mesquites' chilli cooking over the fire.

Loved seeing you all again, last night was great fun, and the shepheds pie lovely. Thanks for the guy who walked me `home` after I got lost for a flipping hour! the light on my torch was so dull by that time and the fog so thick I could barely see the ground. it was ankle deep mud and raining. After nearly an hour I was RIGHT BACK WHERE i STARTED!! its true lost people go in a circle!!

Just a quick note to any interested members, i have a New Blogspot.. http://wolfcrafter.blogspot.com/

It has pics and posts about the last 2 Rough Close meet Jan 2010, plus the Rough Close meet sept 2009! .. I know its mainly about my set-up and Jimbo's (http://jimbobushcraft.blogspot.com/).. (sorry, will try to get around with the camera more often this March meet!) but I thought it would give an insight to new comers (and old) about things that go on''

Happy Blog reading.. some cool links included.. and any comments on the new 'Fire Crane' Grill Cooking system much appreciated!
